PUBLISHED: May 3, 2022 at 2:08 p.m. | UPDATED: May 3, 2022 at 2:09 p.m.

San Clemente surfer Sawyer Lindblad took home this weekend’s Jack’s Surfboard
Pro title in Huntington Beach, a big victory for the up-and-coming surfer.

Also, Hawaiian Keanu Asing earned the men’s title against Newport Beach’s Tyler
Gunter in the finals on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

The Jack’s Surfboards Pro was the first stop of the World Surf League’s North
America Qualifying Series. Conditions were challenging throughout the four-day
event, finishing in 2- to 4-foot swell. Strong winds made for messy waves for
surfers to navigate.

The contest brought an international field of surfers from as far as Australia
to Brazil, with several local big names, including two-time U.S. Open of Surfing
winner Brett Simpson and former World Tour surfer Nate Yeomans.

Lindblad took down Zoe Benedetto in the women’s final, her first win since 2020
and her second QS win.

“It feels really good to win the Jack’s Pro and know that all my hard work is
paying off,” Lindblad said via text while en route to Australia, where she’ll
compete at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast.  “I’m really happy that I got a win in
the first event of the new season.”

The win earns her points toward battling in the Challenger Series, a new format
that allows rising surfers a chance at qualifying to compete against the world’s
best.

“My main goal this year is to be consistent on the Challenger Series and qualify
for the Championship Tour,”  Lindblad said.

Lindblad was on a hot streak through the finals day, earning the highest
single-wave score of 9.17 in her semifinal battle with Bella Kenworthy after
overcoming Newport Beach’s Kaleigh Gilchrist in the quarterfinals.

skills to adapt to the ever-changing online landscape. About the same time, she
began covering the 42-miles of Orange County coastline, focusing on lifestyle,
environment, surf culture and anything having to do with the beach. Her coastal
coverage now extends up the California coast into Long Beach and the South Bay.
