VIDEO: A RICH HISTORY

VIDEO: A RICH HISTORY

Print

With the stage set following the civil rights movement, the official celebration
of Hispanic heritage was spearheaded by Congressman George E. Brown in June of
1968.

A representative for the San Gabriel Valley and East Los Angeles, both of which
were heavily influenced by their Hispanic and Latinx communities, Brown sought
to recognize the importance of these cultures in American History. It began as a
week of commemoration under American President Lyndon B. Johnson, but was
expanded under American President Ronald Reagan with Public Law 100-402 on
August 17th, 1988, to become Hispanic Heritage Month.

While other commemorative months begin on the 1st, Hispanic Heritage Month
starts on September 15th and runs through October 15th to coincide with the
independence anniversaries of El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and
Honduras. It also encapsulates Mexico’s independence day on the 16th and Chile’s
on the 18th.

Watch: In this video, stars from the Freeform TV network celebrate their
Hispanic heritage and share what it means to them.

Hispanic or Latinx? What’s the difference? If you’ve ever been unsure which term
to use, remember that “hispanic” refers to Spain, Spanish-speaking countries,
and/or a Spanish-speaking person. “Latinx,” which is the gender neutral term for
Latino/Latina, refers to Latin American people, countries, and/or culture.

Take Action: With centuries of history encompassing those with heritage from
Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, Hispanic Heritage
Month honors the contributions of millions. What can you plan at your
organization to celebrate it?
