What is this request about?
RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive and it restricts
the use of 10 hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment to
protect human health and the environment. With this request, your customer is
asking for a RoHS declarations that states whether or not your parts/products
contain any of the 10 restricted substances over the allowable threshold
(calculated at the homogeneous material level):

 * Lead (Pb) and its compounds: 0.1%
 * Mercury (Hg) and its compounds: 0.1%
 * Cadmium (Cd) and its compounds: 0.01%, lower than other listed substances
 * Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) and its compounds: 0.1%
 * Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): 0.1 %
 * Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE): 0.1 %
 * Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP): max 0.1%
 * Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP): max 0.1%)
 * Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): max 0.1%
 * Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP): max 0.1%

There are exemptions available for certain parts/products for a temporary period
of time. Several exemptions have been added since the publication of the
directive and others have expired and no longer apply; the exemption lists are
continuously updated in line with technical progress. Exemptions have
established expiration dates, and extension/renewal may be requested using an
established process. While an exemption has an extension request under
consideration, that extension may continue to be used (even byond the original
expiration date) until a decision is reached.

Even if your parts/products aren’t electrical or electronic, your customer might
still request a RoHS declaration if they are incorporating your parts/products
in a final product which is electrical or electronic, as that entire product has
to be RoHS compliant.

How do I start?
In order to be able to complete this request, you will require information on
the chemicals contained in your parts/products. If you do not manufacture the
parts/products yourself, the information can be obtained by asking your
suppliers to provide you with a RoHS declaration, from which you can gather the
applicable information.
 

Why is my customer asking me for this information?
Your customer needs this information for the parts/products that you supply to
them in order to determine if they can legally place their products on the EU
market. There is a restriction on the presence of the 10 hazardous RoHS
substances in certain parts/products over the thresholds shown above, unless an
exemption can be applied.
