I fell in love with social science in grad school.
For my 74th birthday I gave myself the ebook and the Audible and time to read.
While Brian speaks a little fast I was enchanted and tho I've never visited, I
live near the Santa Fe institute which I know of from grad school. I'm
passionate about synchronicity. Call me an aspiring Kantu. The doves have
recently returned out my window.
Yes CONTROL is our nemesis. I prefer phenomenology, awe, wonder and grace. And
in just the right bits, Brian reveals his own "mysticism". I too want to know
consciousness!
Brian takes on a lot. I chose a method by John Heron called Cooperate Inquiry.
He claimed that research should be with people not on people. We
are peers. Groups are intentionally small and done in cycles of exploration.
Returning to compare EXPERIENCE. All knowing is relational.
In my imagination I see myself capturing Brian in a net and going to a bar to
slow down together.
I was blessed to study transformative learning and change and because I carry
family genetic issues I learned and then helped 2k as an epigenticist. Also I
became a minister as we know DNA is fluid and meditation and mindfulness
intentionally, called practices, do change amygdalas and might have saved that
murderer. Deep Healing was developed by Harvard and changes the brain in 55 days
and yes it works.
Besides Brian nailing our obsessive need to control I loved his recognition of
the power of unknowing and awe. Btw I grew up in Monterey Bay where the monarch
butterflies spend time.
Life is a glorious mystery and I feel blessed to have been called to Brian's
brilliance.
I have also taught research and really noticed when corporations took over.
Students would come into class and say look, this one's backed Coca cola! "
Many won't like a book like this but this life long learner is deeply grateful
for meeting Brian. Hats off to his editors!

We help determine what happens to ourselves and others, or so we believe. We
form narratives in which our own agency has a starring role.
But anything can change the course of our lives. A cloud moves, and a plane
doesn’t take off or changes its flight path. It matters who is or isn’t on the
plane, whether the plane crashes, or where the airmen drop the bomb.
We know that chance occurrences make a difference in the outcome, yet we resist
this notion, partly because it seems unfair. Some people live, others die, due
to luck? We might as well say they were saved or destroyed for no reason at all.
“We want a rational explanation to make sense of the chaos of life,” Brian Klaas
writes. And to a large extent, we tune out what we hear as mere noise. If we
can't slot an event in our broader narrative of life, we ignore it. “Nobody
tiptoes around with extreme care to make sure not to squish the wrong bug. Few
panic about an irrevocably changed future after missing the bus,” Klaas
observes.
Yet how else, he asks, does the future get made?
The little, non-rational reasons seem to be the real reasons.
If your parents hadn’t met, you wouldn’t be here. The same is true for your
ancestors, all the way back.
"We are the offshoots of a sometimes wonderful, sometimes deeply flawed past,"
he writes, and "our existence is bewilderingly fragile, built upon the shakiest
of foundations."
Could we have acted differently? Did we have free will then? And do we have free
will, right now, to change anything at all?
When we look for a cause, we often see a fluke. The fluke isn’t nothing. It’s
just not the meaning we originally hoped for. It’s unexpected and unrepeatable,
and we can embrace it.
This book is elegantly readable nonfiction, revolving thorny philosophical
dilemmas with ease. Its framing is productive. Especially if we start with no
assumption of a god running the show, "Fluke" helps us approach the question of
how we small humans are standing here under the big sky. We can start by letting
go of commonly understood “reasons,” and we can try out different kinds of
explanation.
The book poses the question: What theory makes the most sense to you?
You get to choose what you believe.

Dr Klass lays out a fascinating and detailed exploration of reality in a
multidisciplinary study of the butterfly effect. His book is layered with many
anecdotal additions that make it both enjoyable and easier to understand. Adding
his own view of how we can fit with this new world view makes the book personal
and thought provoking. Some may find that his work puts their traditional
beliefs of divine involvement and guidance in an unfavorable light but I found
it enlightening.

Oh boy. The first eleven chapters of this book will give you new ways to think
about how the world really works. Klaas writes clearly and with humor, thank
goodness, to answer six Big Questions: Does everything happen for a reason? Why
do tiny changes make big impacts? Why do humans cling to stories over actual
reality? Why can't we use better models to understand flukes? Where do flukes
come from? And can we be better and happier if we embrace chaos? Wow. A reader
could stop after chapter eleven and walk away a better person with a lot to
think about. Then in the last two chapters, Klaas turns all this on its head
with a mind-blowing discussion about the deterministic nature of reality, the
illusion of free will, and how accepting our uncertain world can and should lead
to a life filled with awe, where everything we do matters. This book has so many
fascinating and important ideas, and it's fun to read!

Klaas has written a book that, if you take it seriously can change your
worldview. He takes apart two worldviews – the convergent view that
(oversimplified) says that the life is moving in a certain direction toward
certain outcomes, and what happens along the way is subordinate to that
movement, and the contingent view that (again oversimplified) says that tiny
incidents can cause huge effects, and the idea of linear cause and effect is
mistaken.
If you were brought up on a Newtonian world view, this is unsettling and has
profound implications.
