WHAT TO EXPECT

If you would like to access this service, you need to make an appointment.
Please bring any relevant documents and information with you.

When you arrive at the law clinic for your appointment, you will be asked to
take a seat in the waiting room until your name is called by one of the law
clinic students. Although the students will make every effort to see you at your
scheduled interview time, it is not always possible to predict how long
interviews will take, so sometimes there is a delay.

One or two students will interview you and gather all the relevant facts about
your legal matter. The students will also look at your documents. This will
assist the students in gathering all the relevant information.

The student/s will then leave the room to discuss your case with the qualified
practitioner/s.

Together, they will consider the appropriate law and options for you to resolve
your matter.

The student/s will then return and advise you on your legal position. They will
discuss options with you about how the problem might be handled and resolved.
They will also let you know if you need to make any further appointments.

Costs

Monash Law Clinics are a free Community Legal Centre so you do not have to pay
for legal advice, however, the conduct of your case may involve expenses,
especially if it involves going to court. You may be eligible for legal aid
which may cover these expenses. Otherwise you are responsible for paying these
expenses yourself. They could include court filing fees, and the cost of a
barrister to appear for you in court.

OUR IMPACT

In Australia, many people are unable to access justice due to high legal fees,
asylum seeker or refugee status and other socio-economic barriers. While
Government funded legal aid is available, these services turn away 160,000
people every year because they lack the capacity and funding to meet
overwhelming demand.

Added to this is the inadequate number of practitioners with the capacity to
provide legal aid and the tightening of government criteria under which clients
can access assistance. The result is a growing number of people falling through
the gap.

The expansion of Monash Law Clinics in the Melbourne CBD, Clayton, and in
partnership with South-East Monash Legal Service underscores the commitment of
Monash Law to assisting vulnerable members of our community, whilst educating
our students in practical, ethical and professional legal practice.
