5-YEAR-OLD N.Y. GIRL FATALLY STRUCK BY SCHOOL BUS AFTER SHE WAS DROPPED HER OFF
NEAR HER HOME

It's the second deadly school bus crash to take place in Rockland County, N.Y.,
this year, according to reports

Authorities in New York say a 5-year-old girl has died after she was hit by a
school bus after getting dropped off near home on Friday morning.



Police said the girl was struck by the bus shortly after she had been dropped
off near her home on South Madison Avenue in Spring Valley, according to NBC
affiliate WNBC and CBS affiliate WCBS.



The girl was walking on the road when she was hit, FOX affiliate WNYW reported.
The victim’s identity has not been publicly released. 



A bystander said the bus was carrying other children, who were about 5 to 6
years old, at the time of the crash, according to The Journal News.

The girl’s body was promptly taken to a temple in the town of Monsey, where a
funeral was subsequently held, according to WNYW. Her burial occurred a short
time later.



The community in which the crash occurred is reportedly home to a large
population of Hasidic Jews.

The Spring Valley police and the Rockland County Sheriff's Office immediately
responded to PEOPLE's requests for comment.

Neighbor Elishiva Nasri recalled waking up to the sounds of “crying and
screaming” this morning, telling WNBC, “It was very painful."



The bus driver was reportedly clearly shaken after the incident. One witness
described the driver as “devastated,” according to The Journal News and WNYW.


Truck Driver Dies After Helping Children Get Out of School Bus Crash: 'He Was
Pretty Much Done'


Another witness described the scene after the crash as “a madhouse.” She said
police took families to see their children one at a time, though some tried to
“cross the line to check on their children” amidst the chaos, per The Journal
News.



This is the second deadly school bus crash in Rockland County this year. An
8-year-old boy was hit and killed by a bus in January, according to WNYW and CW
affiliate WPIX.
