FEBRUARY 2024 RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS

DATABASE CONTENTS

 * 172K new object links (pointers) were added from over 800 new references.
 * 67K sources from the literature were cross-identified with NED objects.
 * 21K new objects were added into the database.
 * 162K new redshift measurements were added, including data for 24K objects
   that previously had no redshift.
 * Current total holdings of the database are summarized here.

NED Provides Host Candidates for Gravitational Wave Event S240422ed

On April 22, 2024, the International Gravitational-Wave Observatory Network
(IGWN) issued an alert for GW event S240422ed, classified as a likely neutron
star–blackhole merger at a distance of 188 Mpc. In less than 2 minutes, NED-GWF
automatically generated a 3D cross match of the sky localization with galaxies
from NED-LVS (Cook et al. 2023). A list of 1520 host candidates within the
updated 90% volume is available at https://ned.ipac.caltech.edu/NED::GWFevents/
(select S240422ed). The top 20 galaxy candidates (green markers in the figure
above) were also published by the NED team within 30 minutes of the GW
notification in NASA General Coordinates Network (GCN Circular 36235).

The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) is funded by the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration and operated by the
California Institute of Technology.
