More info Thank you for subscribing A top-rated builder has urged people looking to lower their energy bills to invest in a £18 item from retailers like B&Q and Wickes. Darren McGhee, who owns DMG Services, was crowned as Screwfix Top Tradesperson in 2019 - so he knows his stuff. Darren has explained that countless people fork out thousands to get their homes insulated, but what many don't realise is that they can do it for free. And what's more, it will cost you barely anything to do it yourself. The building expert has explained how you can insulate your home for as little as £18.60, and it could save you as much as £300 on heating bills every year. The best bit? You can get cheap materials from popular DIY stores like Wickes, B&Q and Wilko. READ MORE: Martin Lewis' word of warning to anyone with a 'demon appliance' that adds HUNDREDS to energy bills Speaking to the Sun, Darren said: "Fitting insulation in your loft space is the best way to stop heat escaping from your home - and it's also pretty cheap. Anyone can do this, you don't need to be a tradesperson. "You can buy insulation from all local builder merchants or retailers such as B&Q and Wickes." B&Q has the cheapest option at £18.60, and it also has dozens of glowing five-star reviews. One reviewer noted an instant change in the temperature of their home. Another commented on how easy it is to apply. It is extremely easy to lay and comes in handy sized rolls to fit many existing rafter spaces." B&Q's Diall Insulation roll has racked up plenty of five star reviews online. One person said: "Easy insulation to work with, nice and soft to handle and doesn’t agitate." Another said: "Loved it for ease of installing in my undercroft, so underneath the floor. Used a cheap staple gun where necessary, and only took a day to complete.. Hopefully, will help this winter, fingers crossed." A third five-star reviewer wrote: "The moment I finished laying this product I instantly noticed a major and significant difference! The cold draft was gone and the warmth was kept in - which has lowered my heating bill!" Show more On applying the insulation yourself, Darren warned: "Do not fit the insulation tight to the eaves, as it still needs to circulate around the loft space and breathe. You should leave a 150mm gap for airflow at least so mould doesn't build up." You can ask your preferred DIY store for help and advice on which insulation product is suitable for your home, and how many rolls you'll need for your space to ensure the desired outcome.
