THE NEW PLANNER IN TEAMS IS NOW IN PUBLIC PREVIEW

‎Mar 11 2024 03:28 PM

We are excited to share that the new Planner app in Teams- announced last
November at Microsoft Ignite - is available today as part of Microsoft Teams
Public Preview. This is an opportunity to get early access and explore all the
new capabilities, and share your feedback with the product team.

THE NEW MICROSOFT PLANNER

As a quick recap from Ignite, the new Planner is a simple, collaborative, and
flexible work management solution that’s assisted by AI and integrated into the
Microsoft 365 products you know and love. From individual projects to team
initiatives, the new Planner app in Teams grows with your needs, and can help
you and your team zoom through your tasks and plans and accelerate outcomes.

We’re bringing together the simplicity of To Do, the collaboration of Planner,
the power of Project for the web and the intelligence of Microsoft Copilot into
a simple, familiar and unified experience, starting in Microsoft Teams.

AVAILABLE IN PREVIEW TODAY

Starting today, the “Tasks by Planner and To Do” app in Microsoft Teams becomes
the new Microsoft Planner in Microsoft Teams Public Preview. Here are some of
the highlights coming with this preview.

Streamlined and faster. First, you will notice a more streamlined and faster
user experience with simplified navigation comprised of three main sections: My
Day, My Tasks and My Plans.

All your tasks in one place. The My Tasks view offers you a single place to see
and manage your tasks with intuitive filters and search capabilities, including
the source of the task, so you can get to what matters most to you fast. This
includes tasks from basic plans, premium plans, tasks from Loop, tasks from
Teams meeting notes and flagged emails.

All your lists, plans and projects. The new My Plans view brings what was
formerly To Do lists, Planner plans and Project projects into a simplified
collection of plans, making it much easier to find the most relevant and recent
plans.

Pin your favorite plans. We all have a handful of plans that we care about the
most. The new Planner enables you to pin your favorite plans to the left
navigation pane – simply select the plan and pin!

Get more with premium plans. Create a new plan and get started with one of the
multiple templates available. You can create new basic plans for your personal
use – that you can later decide to share – as well as starting directly with a
premium plan with lots of great features including things like Sprint planning,
Goals view, People view, Timeline view with dependencies, Custom fields and
more. With a premium plan you can also try the new Copilot in Planner preview to
make work more actionable. Copilot can help breaking down tasks into subtasks,
identifying work needed to meet project goals and answering basic questions on
the overall status of the project.

Here are some ideas on how you can use the new Planner and get started today:

- Ideate with the team – Create an inspiration board to track the team ideas for
the next hackathon.
- Managing your career goals – Create a plan to track your career goals, core
priorities and specific learning and training tasks you want to make progress
on.
- Planning the team sprint – Track progress in your daily scrum with a sprint
planning board using the built-in agile tools, and load balance the work as a
team using the People view.
- Managing a product release – Coordinate a product release with dependencies
and assess and manage the delivery timeline.

See the new Planner app in action:

HOW TO ACCESS

HOW CAN I ACCESS PUBLIC PREVIEW OF THE NEW PLANNER?

Preview allows you to get early access and explore upcoming features in the new
Planner. If your admin has enabled public preview in Microsoft Teams and your
Microsoft 365 subscription includes Planner, you’re ready to check out the new
Planner.

For those interested in trying out premium features in the new Planner app,
including Copilot in Planner preview, you can begin your free trial or request a
premium license by clicking the diamond icon within the Planner app itself. For
existing Project for the web users with a Project license, you’re already
equipped with access to the new Planner’s premium capabilities corresponding to
the license you have.

AS AN ADMIN, HOW CAN I ENABLE USERS IN MY ORGANIZATION TO TRY THE NEW PLANNER IN
PUBLIC PREVIEW?

To try the new Planner, your organization must have a Microsoft 365 subscription
that includes Planner and have activated public preview capabilities in Teams.
For detailed instructions on how to enable public preview, please refer to:
Public preview in Microsoft Teams – Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn

If your organization does not have Project licenses, you can start a free trial
for your users here. Once you’ve acquired and assigned licenses, be sure to
direct your end users to the new Planner app in Teams.

SHARE YOUR FEEDBACK

As a preview, we know there are still a few wrinkles to iron out and some
capabilities to complete. We need your feedback to help us get there. You can
share feedback through the new Planner app in Teams directly. You can also send
us your feedback via the Planner Feedback Portal.

Here is how you can share your feedback directly from within the new Planner
app:

Hello @Roberto_Bojorquez

I'm not sure this is working correctly. I followed the steps in the "As an
admin..." link, which by the way were somewhat cryptic and not accurate for New
Teams. I am using the latest Preview version of Teams
(24033.811.2738.2546(preview)). Teams is still only showing the old Planner, not
the new one. Am I missing something, or does it not work as per the
instructions?

Thanks

Will our Project For the Web plans automatically populate in the New Planner? If
not for Public Preview, then for launch? Or what steps will be needed to
integrate our P4W Plans to the New Premium Planner? Thank you!

Am I understanding this correctly @Roberto_Bojaorquez that in order to leverage
Copilot with Planner you need to have a Planner Premium license?

@Roberto_Bojorquez , will all of the new Planner data be stored in the dataverse
/ onelake data hub / be easily accessible from Power Suite and Power BI such as
the P4W data is currently? It's great not having to do any significant
manipulation to get the P4W data into Power BI reports. Hopefully this will be
the case for Planner task data overall once the new Planner is rolled out?

No Recycle Bin (or much better, versioning) = no means of recovering deleted
items/buckets (accidental or intentional) = cannot use for business.

Definitely a good start and thanks for that. But there are still some
unsatisfactory issues:

 * While the Project stuff is stored in Dataverse, Planner is stored somewhere
   else.
 * As I have expected - while Planner cards can display notes, checklist,
   attachemet, project cards don't.
 * My tasks:

   * Columns can't be sorted / moved / renamed.
   * Just two filters - Please bring in more filters, like with Planner.
   * Can't filter / group e.g. by Source - this is crucial feature to keep work
focused, as tasks are coming from many possible sources.
 * My Plans:
   * Nice to see a mixed list of Plans and Projects - thank's for that!
   * Too long column names. E.g. instead of just - Last opened, the name states
something like - The last time you have opened the Project. But - the list
contains also Plans, not only projects.
   * Once again - columns can't be sorted / moved / renamed.
   * Please unify the column names across the sections. Instead of Shared with,
the Source name would be OK and it is used in the My tasks section.

So, as I have already said - a good start. Please keep the unifications coming!

/Petr

I find the instructions in the below sorely lacking

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/public-preview-doc-updates?apcid=00659eac1497c26ced...

In the section Enable Public preview, I have no idea to implement that as I do
not see About anywhere. A screenshot of this would have been helpful.

@Roberto_Bojorquez I'm seeing the same thing as @KSatC5 above.  Enabled Preview
Opt in in Teams Admin Center.  In New Teams Client went to Settings --> About
Teams and checked the Public preview box which then shows version as
24046.2807.2738.2540(preview) but as of now still do not see Planner app only To
do by Planner.  Been a few hours, restarted client a couple times.  Are there
other steps, or just a waiting game?  Doesn't seem to be any online
documentation for exact steps.

Normally excited to read all the latest innovations, but this looks very
worryingly like Project for the Web is becoming a "Premium" product.  All the
PftW features in this video/article are behind the Premium paywall.  I hope I'm
missing something.  Please tell me I'm wrong.

@Shawn_Brown

You will fint the Public Preview under the three dots alongside your profile.
Then shose Settings and then in the bottom left corner you have "about Teams".
There you can check the box for Public Preview.

It's time that you publish more information about your Planner Premium license
and how you plan to continue with Project Plans. In February, you renamed
Project Plan 1 to Planner Plan 1 for a short time.

Is the New Planner Public Preview another one of these "USA only" typre previews
- I got the email saying I had access as has a colleague, both of our Teams
clients are New Teams on Public Preview.
"Planner" pinned app still displays "Tasks by Planner and To Do", but now new
Planner showing...

I'm in Australia, Microsoft always releases stuff to us last.

Anyone else having trouble deleting a plan created in the new Planner preview in
MS Teams?

There is a message that the object was not found and you no longer have
permissions to the object, but it continues to be visible and accessible.

It also cannot be removed through the website.

Almost a full day later and Teams is still only showing "Tasks by Planner and To
Do", not the new one. Worth nothing my Teams version seems to have lowered
to 24046.2807.2738.2540 - no longer shows (Preview) but right underneath that it
shows "Early Access through Office Current Channel (preview)". And, the checkbox
to enable/disable previews has vanished.

Hello, I've got the new Planner and I see that I can create Plans without them
necessarily being attached to a team. These plans are private and can only be
consulted by me. I can't find any trace of them in my oneDrive. Are they stored
in Sharepoint Embedded? Or elsewhere?

I see that I can only invite groups to join my plan, in fact it even seems to
move the plan into the group, is that right? Is the plan then stored in the
group?

It's a pity I can't invite members to join a plan I've created, as this is a
much-requested feature with us. The only workaround we have is to create a to-do
list in Loop so that it synchronizes with a planner... It's also a pity that the
new Planner doesn't come with a recycle garbage can, something we've been asking
for years.

For the time being, I don't really see the point of this new planner, at least
if you don't have a premium subscription...

This new Planner app in Teams is still as bad as the old Tasks by Planner and
To-Do. It still doesn't show the "my day" correctly as it does in To Do. I
currently have 8 on my day for today and it has 3 that are recurring but no new
ones. It just looks like a rebranded name to the old BAD Teams app. I know it is
preview but at this point, I can't recommend as I wouldn't recommend the old one
as it just is bad.

3/13, I've followed all steps, enabled public preview, restarted Teams multiple
times, and the only change so far is the name of the app within the sidebar menu
in Teams is now showing as "Planner" rather than the former "Tasks by Planner
and To-Do." But once you click on that to go into Planner, the header still
reads "Tasks by Planner and To-Do" and I do not see any of the new
features/setup noted above (e.g. everything being sorted into My Day, My Tasks,
My Plans). Please advise, Microsoft team!

It may take some time to roll out to everyone who is on public preview as that

So usual question, if we don't want our people using trials and premium features
(as we are not ready for this). Where is the off switch.

In Powershell no doubt somewhere. We are trying to keep license costs down.

I know you want us all to evaluate and use it hapy to do so but we need to
handle that when we have resources to do so.

Hello,

are Copilot features available on top of an existing M365 copilot license or is
it autonomous with Planner Premium ?

Also on top of creating tasks, is there more copilot feature example to analyse
a plan, etc ?

Thanks, for one project ok.

But for all company projects... Also I don't want to configure it manually for
me and all the company.
Why MS stopped all integrations with DevOps ?

@AndreL

Thanks. So, I see Early Access checkbox in both web Teams and standalone Teams.
The web version I can not check the box, in the standalone Teams I can but
Planner Preview does not seem to be available. Still just have Tasks by Planner
and To Do.

@CourtBoda When you go to My Plans view in the new Planner in Teams, recent
plans from Project for the web would appear in the list and you can open them
directly in the app.

The Planner app should be available for all Teams Public Preview users, except
for Teams mobile app. Teams mobile app will continue to show the existing
experience.

@ST-Ken the Planner App has propagated faster than the App rename. Can you
please check whether App Name shows Planner now? We believe the rename rollout
was completed.

@bhavit13 @KSatC5 can you please confirm you are still not seeing the new
Planner App? I will follow up with a private message to get more info, so we can
troubleshoot faster.

@Biatrice_Ambrosa I am also not seeing it yet and would appreciate any support!
We have public preview enabled, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app
within Teams, and have restarted Teams several times just to make sure. The only
change so far is that the name now shows as "Planner" in the left sidebar, but
when I actually go into the app it's still called "Tasks by Planner and To Do"
and I do not see any of the changes described above. Thanks!

@Biatrice_Ambrosa as others have reported I'm seeing the Planner App now but
just by name only.  Opening it still shows Tasks by Planner and To Do.  Also
have restarted Teams several times as well as uninstalled and re-added the app
in Teams Client.

Update, Uninstalling again just now.. then going to Get Apps and Planner is back
to being named Tasks by Planner and Todo, going backwards a bit.

I have preview properly checked and have also restarted Teams. I JUST received a
notification to update Teams (yes, I'm on the new Teams). I updated and it
restarted and its unfortunately still showing the old Planner. As with the
others, in the left menu, the icon and name have updated but when you open
Planner its the old name and old UI.

Also, if the premium Planner is going to add a new licensing cost, can we simply
use the old MS Project on the web instead? I want to ensure that app is not
being sunset.

Hi @Biatrice_Ambrosa, my client, version details of which are shown above still
has this icon for planner...

Clearly this roll-out is not progressing very well, given the number of
responses here showing problems.

@Roberto_Bojorquez @Brian-Smith, it's great that it is working on Macs
internally at Microsoft - it doesn't seem to be working for anyone who is part
of the public, using non-Mac PCs, including Microsoft Surface in your Public
Preview.

Why announce something is available when you haven't rolled it out yet?

@Biatrice_Ambrosa I'm not seeing it yet as well.  Planner icon is in the left
panel but when i click on it it loads Tasks by Planner and ToDo.   Earlier in
the day the Planner icon even disappeared and reverted to showing the Tasks
icon. Our Teams Admin has tried various steps to get it to update with no
success.

I tried setting up the 'EA' teams version to have access to the Public Preview,
the only difference is the name on the icon, that changed to "Planner", but
everything else is the same. I also tried with the new teams version but I it
doesn't have access to 'EA'.

I uninstalled Tasks by Planner and To Do. I quit Teams. I launched Teams. I
searched and found the Planner app and added to Teams. Felt some hope. Icon says
Planner, but it is still Tasks by Planner and To Do.

Hi,

One of the problems in the previous versions was that when plan is shared

so all plan members can see all tasks without permission brake

Sometimes there are scenarios that need create a plan with ability to see only
assigned to me tasks

Without everyone see everyone tasks and progress.

I don't see any mention about that - is there any change with that part in the
new version?

We followed the steps and we can't get the new Planner to show up on Teams yet.
Is this preview feature restricted to USA?

When will we be able to see the changes in the app versions for tablet/phone?
Will it be later in the year as with the web version?

Hello @Biatrice_Ambrosa

Still not working. Teams is showing "Tasks by Planner and To-Do" in the
shortcuts pane, and when I click on it, it is still the same old version. I
noticed my About Teams no longer shows I am on a Preview version, but it still
says I am in Early Access. The checkbox to enable/disable Preview versions has
vanished as well. I think this is a bug.

@Roberto_Bojorquez

Same issue here.

The old Planner still occurs.

I have also followed the guide. The icon in Teams has changed from 'Task' from
Planner and To-Do to only Planner.

What can I do?
