Twitter's Challenges tippinsights Editorial Board 04.Dec.2021 Captain Parag Agarwal is Twitter's new pilot. Will his astute intelligence, combined with AI at his disposal, rescue the microblogging platform or fly a kamikaze mission? Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, stepped down from the role this week to give more attention to his other business, Square. Dorsey's stepping down has raised many questions about the direction Twitter will take now. Will it completely morph into the leftist echo chamber as many perceive it to be today? Or will the platform continue to be a battlefield for political ideologies between the "right" and the "left"? The company website proclaims that Twitter is an "open service that's home to a world of diverse people, perspectives, ideas, and information." But, since its launch in 2006, the short messaging service has shortchanged a significant chunk of American people by failing to promote diverse perspectives or even offer space to air them. The microblogging and social networking service's user base is mainly American, with an audience reach of over 77.7 million. But, Twitter faces many challenges. First is the lopsided composition of its users. The Investor’s Business Daily/TIPP Poll completed in early November showed that 33% of conservatives, 31% of moderates, and 42% of liberals use the messaging service. Based on political affiliation, 40% among Democrats, 27% of Republicans, and 34% of independents use the site. Second, Twitter suffers from a trust deficit. Only 27% of Americans hold a favorable opinion of the service. According to the latest IBD/TIPP Poll, the distrust is high across the board. 38% of Democrats hold a favorable view compared to 25% of Democrats who don't. Among liberals, 37% favor Twitter, while 28% don't. The scenario is worse on the other side. 38% of Republicans have an unfavorable opinion of Twitter, while 21% are favorably disposed. 39% expressed mistrust among conservatives, while 27% trusted the service. Similarly, negative attitudes are more prevalent among independents (37% vs. 19%) and moderates (31% vs. 23%). Since the 2016 presidential election, Twitter has faced tremendous criticism, primarily due to the censorship of many prominent conservative personalities and journalists. For instance, Twitter has suspended Donald Trump, Paul Sperry, Wayne Allyn Root, Laura Loomer, Jamie Glazov, James O'Keefe, and many others. Even if one excuses the platform for suspending accounts to diffuse tense stand-offs, blanket bans are unacceptable. By permanently and arbitrarily banning people from Twitter, the platform functions as an active agent of cancel culture. Such censorships have generated a new challenge for Twitter's new CEO, Parag Agarwal, to face. According to a Verge Article, Agarwal, the Chief Technological Officer (CTO) of Twitter since 2011, has led the charge on "scaling a cohesive machine learning and AI approach" for the platform. Last year, in an interview with the Atlantic, he described how the microblogging site uses several agents and machine learning to "proactively identify potentially bad tweets" it prioritizes for review. The very same AI system is censuring many prominent conservatives today. AI is only as unbiased as the creators of the system, and Mr. Agarwal has an uphill battle in preventing the platforms' AI and algorithms from making Twitter into a leftist utopian echo chamber which would be harmful to the company's bottom line. Twitter has already experienced a measure of fallout due to its censoring, especially of conservative voices. Prominent conservative voices and a large section of their followers have left in droves to similar platforms such as Gettr and Parler. 'Tweets' meant to disseminate information were also expected to initiate dialogue and facilitate the exchange of ideas. Ideally, it should have presented all perspectives without bias and led to healthy debates. Barring that, the service provider should have refrained from penalizing one political party or ideology. According to a Pew Research Center Study, 25% percent of Twitter users produce 97% of all tweets. The study also stated that "Twitter users (64%) say they are mostly using it to see what others are saying. Just 7% say they are mostly using it to express their own opinions, while another 28% say it's an equal mix of both." The key here is 64% are passive and mainly use the platform to see what others are saying. Twitter does have an audience of tens of millions. It can and has been used as a tool to shape the narrative of events and to influence opinions. Without a fair discourse, conservatives and moderates among the silent-watchers will slowly migrate to other platforms. Twitter truly needs more conservative personalities like Donald Trump and veteran journalists like Paul Sperry to present a complete picture. Without them, the left will have no one to "fight against" or engage with, and the passive users will become discouraged from using the platform. They will begin to only see the same things from broadcasting media repeated in the Twittersphere and eventually leave. Parag Agarwal needs to watch his algorithms closely, reinstate more prominent conservative profiles, and understand that censoring conservative voices is harmful to Twitter in the long run. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Please share with anyone who would benefit from the tippinsights newsletter. "What I am doing is putting together what I believe to be the most comprehensive and meaningful set of initiatives to make it very, very difficult for Mr. Putin to go ahead and do what people are worried he's going to do," Biden said, without going into detail. U.S. and Ukrainian officials warned again this week that severe economic sanctions are on the table against Russia. Ukrainian tensions set the backdrop for the first call in months between the U.S. president and his Russian counterpart as soon as next week. As in their past talks, including a June face-to-face meeting in Geneva, other issues likely to come up include cybersecurity, arms issues, Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, and Syria. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EUROPEAN DIPLOMATS DISAPPOINTED BY IRAN'S STANCE IN NUCLEAR TALKS The United States and European powers have voiced disappointment at what they said was Iran's lack of seriousness in the latest round of negotiations. The White House said Tehran did not bring any "constructive proposals" to the renewed negotiations suspended in Vienna on December 3. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said separately on the same day that the talks ended because Iran right now does not seem to be serious about doing what is necessary to return to compliance with the deal. "Major changes (have been) demanded (by Iran)," European officials at the negotiations said in a statement on December 3, adding that some were incompatible with the 2015 deal. "Tehran is walking back almost all of the difficult compromises crafted after many months of hard work," they added. The E3 (Britain, France, and Germany) diplomats went on to say it was "unclear how these new gaps can be closed in a realistic timeframe." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AUSTRALIA REFUSES TO SIGN 'TRUCE' FOR BEIJING OLYMPICS AS IT WEIGHS UP DIPLOMATIC BOYCOTT Australia has joined 19 other countries in opting not to sign a truce with China ahead of next year's Winter Olympics. The Olympic Truce is a tradition that dates back to ancient Greece to ensure conflicts don't disrupt the competition. The 20 countries' refusal to sign sends a message to Beijing over its human rights abuses in Xinjiang and Hong Kong and the treatment of Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai. Since its revival in 1993, Israel and North Korea are usually the only countries not to sign the truce. But the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday passed the resolution without the support of 20 countries. None of the "Quad" members – United States, India, Australia, and Japan – sponsored the resolution, and New Zealand was the only country in the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network, comprising Australia, NZ, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the U.S., to sign the truce. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AS U.S. PROMOTES DEMOCRACY, CHINA TOUTS ITS OWN VERSION In the initial "Summit for Democracy," China - which was not invited - has increasingly talked up the advantages of its own "whole-process democracy." Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng speaks during a dialogue event on democracy in Beijing, In recent weeks, Chinese state media and diplomats have ramped up criticism of democracy in the United States, touting what they describe as preferable outcomes in its system of "socialist democracy with Chinese characteristics" on measures ranging from COVID-19 management to social mobility. Communist Party-ruled China, widely considered to have become increasingly authoritarian under President Xi Jinping, first used the phrase "whole-process democracy" in 2019. The concept was enshrined in law this past March. The Dec. 9-10 event hosted by Biden did not invite China, but Beijing-claimed Taiwan was.
