For 87 years, the American Dream has come with a promise: you work hard, play by
the rules and pay into the system your entire career — you receive Social
Security when you retire. For many generations of hard-working Americans, Social
Security has been a lifeline. This year alone, over 67 million Americans will
receive monthly Social Security checks. Money they paid into over the course of
their careers.

Representing New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, my support for the vital
Social Security program is resolute. I believe that we need to prioritize the
protection of Social Security and make it clear to those we serve that cuts or
drawdowns to the program are strictly off-limits. Decade over decade, Congress
has found solutions to ensure that Social Security checks were there for
retirees, seniors and those in need, and now it is our turn to do the same.

That is why, in one of my first acts in Congress, I joined my Republican
colleagues to introduce a resolution supporting the preservation and protection
of Social Security for generations to come. As debates over our federal budget
continue, it is important for lawmakers to be clear that these programs are not
on the chopping block. It is true that the federal government spends far too
much money, and we have felt the consequences with skyrocketing inflation and
mounting national debt. There are many areas in the over $6 trillion federal
budget that are wasteful, fraudulent, and constitute abuse where Congress can
debate cutting: Social Security and Medicare are not one of those areas.

Social Security helps to put groceries on tables, gas in cars and keeps homes
heated in the winter. These are crucial resources that tens of millions of
Americans rely upon. Without it, basic necessities may be out of reach.
Americans are relying on us in Congress to protect their livelihoods, and it is
important that we fiercely defend this important program.

OpinionGreat job, Biden! Social Security is going broke and debt payments are
breaking the bank

I am confident that we will have a large coalition of Republicans and Democrats,
and people from across the ideological spectrum, to support these important
programs this year and for years to come.

I will continue to lead in this Congress to ensure that Social Security, the
promise of the American Dream, is available for today and for generations to
come.

Tom Kean Jr. represents New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, which includes
Hunterdon and Warren counties and parts of Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Union
counties.
