GARTNER® MAVERICK RESEARCH: STOP INVESTING IN IT SKILLS IT Skills or IT Outcomes? This is usually a simple question to answer because these have traditionally been linked. However, the persistent shortage of IT skills adversely affects an Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) leader’s ability to recruit, train and retain their staff, impacting their ability to deliver IT outcomes. As a result, this has influenced numerous recommendations for organizations to consider alternatives. This Maverick research contradicts the traditional advice that clients should focus on acquiring, developing and reskilling IT talent. Instead, it recommends stopping investment in IT skills and instead focusing on achieving IT outcomes that optimize costs and improve agility and efficiency. GET GARTNER REPORT Welcome back, Abdalla Abker Download Not you? Please enable Javascript to view this form. In this report, Gartner outlines the following findings and recommendations: * By 2030, IT leaders will fail to fill 75% of their job listings, compared with 25% in 2023 * By 2030, 90% of employees with IT skills will be employed by technology vendors or service providers, up from 30% in 2023. * Avoid hiring employees tactically, based on IT skills. Rather than building the IT skills of their staff, they should, in effect, procure desired strategic IT outcomes by buying products and services. * There should be a focus on business competencies, and specifically vendor management and sourcing outcomes. Organizations need to be less vertically integrated — by contrast, acquiring IT skills equates to vertical integration.
