OPPENHEIMER HOLDS FIRM IN CHINA AS IT INCHES CLOSER TO BILLION-DOLLAR MARK

By Jodee Brown
Published 26 minutes ago

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer adds to its impressive tally in China as the
film gets a small step closer to reaching $1 billion globally.

Oppenheimer continues to gain momentum at the Chinese box office as the
biographical thriller still has an outside chance of reaching the $1 billion
mark in ticket sales worldwide.

Per the box-office tracker, Artisan Gateway, the Christopher Nolan-helmed epic
is now close to grossing $60 million across Chinese cinemas after, earning $2.5
million this past weekend to bring the film's tally in the market to $58.1
million. The R-rated summer blockbuster has also been prospering in IMAX
theaters, taking home $17 million from large-format cinemas in the Asian nation,
which is 30% of the overall IMAX tally nationwide this year.

Office Milestone

With China providing yet another boost to Oppenheimer's higher-than-expected
revenue, the film now boasts a global box-office return of $926.2 million at the
time of writing. Chronicling the eponymous theoretical scientist J. Robert
Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) and his role in the Manhattan Project that birthed
the first atomic bomb, Oppenheimer now stands as the highest-grossing biopic of
all time, recently passing Bohemian Rhapsody for top honors.

Given Oppenheimer isn't due for an online release until November, the film still
has time to make the billion-dollar mark. Only one R-rated movie has made more
money than Oppenheimer in history, 2019's Joker ($1.066 billion) starring
Joaquin Phoenix. Furthermore, Oppenheimer is the third-highest-grossing film in
2023, only trailing The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.361 billion) and Barbie
($1.428 billion), which was released on the same day as the Universal Pictures
title. Both Oppenheimer and Barbie have been credited with bringing Hollywood
revenue back to pre-pandemic levels, encouraging several fans to return to
cinemas after years away.

OPPENHEIMER WAS DESIGNED FOR IMAX SCREENS

Oppenheimer features an all-star cast including Florence Pugh (Jean Tatlock),
Robert Downey Jr. (Lewis Strauss), Matt Damon (Lt. Leslie Groves) and Emily
Blunt (Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer). Set in World War II, the movie was
specifically shot for IMAX screens, with the movie enjoying a
longer-than-expected run in domestic IMAX theaters due to increased demand.
Additionally, the film featured special effects throughout, with Nolan opting
against using CGI.

Nolan has enjoyed strong critical success with Oppenheimer as the flick is one
of his highest-rated feature-length projects, boasting a 93% critical rating on
Rotten Tomatoes. The movie has been praised by fellow filmmakers for its
spectacle, including by Dune helmer Denis Villenueve.

Oppenheimer is now showing in theaters across North America.
