OUR MISSION

To invigorate the spirit of the Mormon Trail – an enduring symbol of
perseverance and faith. In 1978, when the Federal Government honored the trail
as a national treasure, they recognized the need for a citizens group to breathe
life into its legacy. While the original guardians of the trail may have passed,
their vision emboldens us.

We are a vibrant community revived, connected in purpose and passion across
state lines, dedicated to service and storytelling. By joining our ranks, you
become part of an ever-unfolding narrative—one that you can witness firsthand,
tread upon by foot, and carry forward for future generations to cherish.

THE MORMON PIONEER NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL:


A JOURNEY TO ZION 

This timeline highlights key dates and locations along the Mormon Pioneer Trail,
stretching from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Salt Lake City, Utah.

FEBRUARY 1846

The first wagons leave Nauvoo, Illinois, crossing the Mississippi River. This
marks the official beginning of the Mormon exodus.

APRIL 1846

The pioneers reach Garden Grove, Iowa, which served as a halfway point across
the state.

JUNE 1846

Brigham Young, the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
arrives at the banks of the Missouri River. Due to ongoing tensions with
residents of Missouri, winter quarters would be established on the other side.

SEPTEMBER 1846

Winter Quarters is set up on the Nebraska shore of the Missouri River. This
location served as a temporary settlement for the Saints while they planned
their journey westward.

APRIL 1847

With improved weather and organization, the vanguard company led by Brigham
Young departs Winter Quarters for the Salt Lake Valley.

MAY 1847

The pioneers reach Fort Kearny, an important trading post along the trail.

JUNE 1847

The vanguard company arrives at Devils Gate, a dramatic landmark carved by the
Sweetwater River in Wyoming.

JULY 1847

Brigham Young enters the Salt Lake Valley, declaring it a suitable location for
a permanent settlement. This marks the official end of the Mormon Trail
migration.
