LFP ARCHIVES: REFLECTING ON ONTARIO'S REALLY BIG BLACKOUT, 20 YEARS LATER

Submitted by London Free Press a day ago
August 14, 2003 – the day tens of millions of people in Ontario and parts of the
U.S. saw their lives screech to a halt amid a massive blackout that lasted the
better part of a day. It started with a Cleveland-area power plant(link is
external) shutdown that prompted a bizarre domino effect that toppled 100 more.
But it was also . . . a strangely nice experience.

BARANYAI: FUNDING FOR AIDS TREATMENT SHOULD BE UNCONDITIONAL

Submitted by London Free Press a day ago
At the time he introduced it, George W. Bush didn't get a lot of recognition; at
least not at home. Nevertheless, the U.S. President's emergency program for AIDS
relief (PEPFAR) proved to be Bush's greatest legacy, hands down. For a president
whose tenure more often leaned into division, PEPFAR was a rare achievement of
lasting bipartisan support.

AT THE BUFFALO OUTER HARBOR, 10 YEARS OF WORK COULD LAST GENERATIONS, REVIVE
AQUATIC HABITAT

Submitted by Great Lakes Com... 3 days ago

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is one step closer to creating a new wetland
ecosystem in Buffalo’s Outer Harbor. Construction on a stone breakwater in the
abandoned shipping slip adjacent to Wilkeson Pointe is scheduled to begin in the
fall and should be completed by November, the Corps announced last week. The new
wetland will help reverse nearly a century of environmental degradation.

BLUE-GREEN ALGAE IS UNUSUAL ON LAKE SUPERIOR BUT EXPERTS SAY THAT MIGHT NOT LAST

Submitted by Great Lakes Com... 3 days ago

Lake Superior is known for its cool, blue beauty, but the largest freshwater
lake in the world (by surface area) has a new antagonist: blue-green algae. The
most recent bloom confirmed in the Thunder Bay (Ontario) District was
reported on Lake Superior at Shuniah’s Birch Beach on July 28. Blue-green algae
blooms aren’t common on Lake Superior, but experts say warming temperatures may
make them more frequent. Read the full story by CBC News.(link is external)

EDITORIAL: COMMUNITIES MOVE ON SEPTIC, BUT STATE LEGISLATION STAGNATES

Submitted by Great Lakes Com... 3 days ago

Michigan is the land of 11,000 lakes and 36,000 miles of streams. We are the
Great Lakes State, but Michigan is also the land of 1.3 million septic systems –
and the only state in the union with no uniform code to regulate them.
Environmental regulators estimate that hundreds of thousands of Michigan’s
septic systems are failing, flushing raw sewage that ends up where we swim,
fish, drink. One local gem of a lake, however, will get some protections, thanks
to the actions of a township board, nonprofit research and health department
cooperation.

SOUVENIR HISTORY OF BRUCE BEACH

Submitted by Beachcomber 15 years ago

FOR well over forty years the Summer Resort known as Bruce Beach on Lake Huron’s
friendly shore has been the holiday rendezvous for health-seekers,
pleasure-seekers and tor those who were just tired. From a very modest beginning
the popularity and the population have grown by leaps and bounds. The need of
having some sort of historical souvenir which would preserve the happy annals of
the Beach had been keenly felt for a long time. It was not, however, until the
year 1915 that the meeting of this need took concrete form.

A HISTORY OF BRUCE BEACH

Submitted by Beachcomber 15 years ago

Shortly after the Bruce Beach Historical Society was formed in the Fall of 1981,
I was having lunch with a friend. When asked why I had given up curling that
year, one of the two or three reasons I mentioned was my interest in publishing
history of Bruce Beach, where my family had been spending their summers for more
