HOW TO ESCAPE THE CYNICISM TRAP

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jamil Zaki
Research psychologist

Jamil Zaki is a professor of psychology at Stanford University and the director
of the Stanford Social Neuroscience Lab.

JAMIL ZAKI'S RESOURCE LIST

Jamil Zaki | Crown, 2019 | Book

THE WAR FOR KINDNESS: BUILDING EMPATHY IN A FRACTURED WORLD

In this book, Zaki lays out the many ways in which modern life has made it
harder for people to connect with each other, and ways we can fight back:
reclaiming our common humanity and using personal connection to repair our
social fabric.

Uri Gneezy et al. | National Bureau of Economic Research, 2014 | Article

"ODE TO THE SEA: WORKPLACE ORGANIZATIONS AND NORMS OF COOPERATION"

A fascinating study of two fishing villages in Brazil, which demonstrates how
competitive or cooperative cultures can "evolve" us into cynical or trusting
versions of ourselves.

Olga Stavrova et al. | Sage Journals, 2014 | Article

"THE CYNICAL GENIUS ILLUSION: EXPLORING AND DEBUNKING LAY BELIEFS ABOUT CYNICISM
AND COMPETENCE"

In this paper, psychologists document two key insights: (i) people expect that
cynics are smarter than non-cynics, and (ii) they're wrong. About 70 percent of
respondents believe that a cynical person would outperform a non-cynic in
cognitive tests, but in actuality, cynics perform worse.

Jamil Zaki et al. | The Washington Post, 2020 | Article

"OPINION: OUR DIVIDED TIMES ARE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EMPATHY. REALLY."

During times of enormous division, empathy can feel useless and weak, like
bringing cotton candy to a gunfight. In this op-ed, we argue it's the opposite:
a strength. But we can only capitalize on its power if we believe in it first.
