KOREAN COMMUNITY UNDER FIRE FOR EXPOSING FOREIGN SOLDIERS’ PRIVATE INFO

“Radical feminists in Korea were being infamous of sharing men’s
personal/privacy information within their online community, called Women’s
generation(Yeo-seong-si-dae) in Daum Kakao club. However, they recently started
to share foreigners information as well including military members stationed in
Korea.”

On May 13, a post titled “[Alert] soldiers in Korea’s personal/privacy
information are getting shared amongst Korean community” was uploaded on Reddit.
The author, who identified themselves as a Korean American who served in the
U.S. military for eight years, including in Korea, stated, “I speak Korean
language as well so I would like to warn you guys, especially for those in
Korea, about your personal/privacy information getting shared amongst local
Korean women community (radical feminist’s).” The post included three
screenshots of content shared in the community.

The first screenshot captured a post from March 26, featuring a selfie of a
soldier with the caption, “Anyone tried this guy? Seems like he’s in Pyeongtaek,
so he must be a U.S. soldier.” The second screenshot was from a post on March
25, showing a photo of a pilot stationed in Seongnam with comments such as
“Looks tasty” and “I know this person, looks much better in photo.”

The third screenshot showed a detailed post listing the names, race, age, unit
(or residence), marital status, girlfriend status, STD status, frequency of
visiting prostitutes, usual behavior, penis size, and sexual manners of men
presumed to be U.S. soldiers stationed in Korea.

There have also been reports of minors’ personal information being shared in
this community, prompting the U.S. military in Korea to consider legal action.
Daum Kakao, the platform hosting the community, stated, “The issue involves a
private cafe where posts are only visible to members who have passed an
authentication process. Non-members or those without the required membership
level cannot view these posts. Daum Cafe does not arbitrarily review or manage
private posts. However, the posts in question have not been reported or
identified.”

Daum Kakao further mentioned, “We inform users of violations such as rights
infringement, abusive language, and defamation in the post and comment sections
and plan to launch a self-regulation campaign. Additionally, we are discussing
various methods to enhance the management of harmful information, including the
introduction of an automated clean system.”

New Reform Party leader Heo Eun-A stated on her social media, “The sex crime
that occurred in the country’s largest women’s community is severe. I hope our
society will provide detailed support to protect victims and prevent
recurrence.”
