Tom Kemp's book provides a superb, well-written overview of the diversity and
evolutionary history of synapsids, the group including mammals. The origin of
mammals is now one of the best-documented evolutionary transitions in the fossil
record. A leading investigator on this subject, Kemp reviews the numerous
changes in features of the skull and postcranial skeleton during this major
transition and interprets these changes in functional terms. This is a
particularly valuable aspect of Kemp's book. His review of mammalian diversity
is an excellent synopsis of the many new data gathered in recent years and is
presented within the framework of a phylogenetically based classification. It
thus supercedes earlier, outdated treatments of this subject. I definitely
recommend Kemp's book for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. The book
also includes an excellent, comprehensive bibliography, which will allow the
reader to pursue topics of interest in greater depth. My only criticism is the
quality of a number of illustrations; on quite a few figures, lines have faded
or vanished during reproduction, and, in a few instances, illustration scans
have been greatly distorted during printing. However, these are minor quibbles
that do not distract from the overall quality of this book.

A spectacular reference book that, as another reviewer noted, starts with the
synapsid amniote ancestors of class mammalia, and works its way forward through
time dealing with the various groups descended from that lineage. Kemp does an
excellent job of putting forward many of the various theories regarding
controversial geologic events and points of evolution (the nature of the K-Pg
extinction, how endothermy most likely evolved, &c) so that the reader can build
their own assumptions. As should be expected, after putting forward all of the
data Kemp draws his own conclusions and lists them for the reader, but I felt
that he did a pretty good job of presenting it in a scientific-like fashion- I
didn't always find myself throwing away bits and pieces of other explanations to
accept Kemp's own.
The generally scientific-minded, reporting style of writing is perhaps why
another reviewer noted a "lack of fire" when dealing with such organisms as
Dimetrodon. This book is about the origin of mammals, and while some necessary,
well-spent time is dedicated to the origins of mammals (out of roughly 300 pages
of text excluding the references, 90 pages (just under 30% of the text) are
dedicated to non-mammalian synapsids, therapsids, Therocephalians, Gorgonopsids,
&c), it is not a book about early 'reptile-like' synapsids. While I enjoy
reading books written by authors like Gould and Bakker that contain a certain
amount of fire, the more report style of writing here was appreciated.
As others have noted, there are some various issues with diagrams making it into
the final work. At times, there are outright errors in the text and a few
instances of misused scientific names (see Jason Lillegraven's review in
Evolution 01/2006). All of these things are, unfortunately, part of the process
in publishing, and such mistakes aren't always fixed in subsequent publications.
None of these mistakes and errors take away from the overall value of the text.
In fact, I personally only have one serious complaint about this work- and it is
an incredibly petty and almost worthless complaint. In the opening of Chapter 4
(The Evolution of Mammalian Biology) Kemp opens with "There are large biological
differences between the mammals and the primitive living amniotes as represented
by the turtles, lizards, and crocodiles." Turtles, and ESPECIALLY Crocodiles,
although not 'endothermic', are HIGHLY specialized. Sphenodon is perhaps the
only extant "lizard" that has many of the primitive structures represented by
early Amniotes. It is significantly more accurate to say that the
specializations seen in Mammals are, with only a few exceptions (differentiated
teeth in some later Crocodile-like Archosaurs, warm bloodedness in extant
birds), highly specialized and close to "unique." The sort of "mammals are
superior" mindset unfortunately dominates many studies, papers, and books
published about both extant and extinct vertebrates, and Kemp is far from the
only guilty party. Kemp is first and foremost an expert in Mammalian structures,
origins, and evolution, and this single sentence does not detract from the
overall value of his work. After all, it isn't a book about structures found in
extant Diapsids and Archosaurs.
This work is, essentially, an incredibly high-level textbook. As such, it does
have a textbook price and assume a certain level of prior knowledge. I don't
think this should stop anyone who is curious about the origins of mammals and in
possession of a swift mind from purchasing it, however. If you're reading
reviews of this work, you're likely already considering such books, and this
would make an excellent purchase. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and it has
found a permanent place on my shelves.

A useful book that attempts to document the case for mammal evolution. He states
that the fossil record is remarkably good on page 4 then documents largely
microevolution in the fossil record. Most of the book covers a very detailed ,
well done, discussions of extinct mammals. He ignores the whole problem of the
origin of genetic information, which today it is largely agreed by orthodox
evolutionists that the answer is mutations, mistakes in the reproduction of
genes and damage to genes from ionizing radiation and other sources. The problem
here is the vast majority of mutations are near neutral or deleterious, thus
causing deterioration of life. Thus he bases the entire book on a very
questionable premise. He also ignores the contribution of epigenetics and other
inbuilt sources of genetic variety. Much of the book is on detailed descriptions
of the anatomy of the animals he discusses, almost never documenting the
progressive changes required for gradual macroevolution. Nonetheless, this book
contains an excellent discussion of what exists in the fossil record.

Make no mistake, this is a book by an expert for experts. Without a solid
background in skeletal and dental anatomy, most of the content of this book will
go over the reader's head. That said, for those with the background to
understand, this is an excellent reference and introduction to the major themes
of mammal evolution.
My favorite thing about this book is that it spends considerable ink on
pre-mammalian synapsids and Mesozoic mammals. Most books on mammal evolution
seem to pick up the tale at the K-T boundary, ignoring most of the story. The
discussion of early mammals and pre-mammals is fantastic, and the author
presents thought-provoking hypotheses for the evolution of key mammalian
characteristics.
This book probably fits into a fairly narrow niche of readers, but for those
readers, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

of the Age of Mammals by Kenneth D. Rose (2006-09-26), or the older but still
excellent Phylogenie der Mammalia - Stammesgeschichte der Säugetiere
(einschließlich der Hominiden) by Erich Thenius.

der Säugetiere. Diese Tiergruppe, die unter dem Riesen-Angebot zu Büchern über
die Entstehungsgeschichte der Dinosaurier eher ein „publizistisches
Schattendasein“ fristet, wird hier in allen Facetten, also von ihrem Auftreten
von den ersten das Land besiedelnden Tetrapoden im späten Devon bis zum heutigen
Tag verfolgt.
Der erste Abschnitt beschäftigt sich mit übergeordneten Fragestellungen der
Paläontologie, mit der zeitlichen und räumlichen Einordnung und der Taxonomie.
Aus Amphibien werden die ersten Reptilien; von diesen zweigten die
„säugetierähnlichen“ Reptilien ab; es folgten zahlreiche globale Ereignisse, die
die weitere Evolution bis zum Auftreten der ersten Dinos im späten Trias
maßgeblich beeinflussten. Im weiteren Verlauf werden Funde aus dem Mesozoikum
vorgestellt, in denen die Säugetiere unter der Vorherrschaft der Dinosaurier
meist nur geringe Körpergröße entwickelten. Ihre eigentliche Verbreitung,
Aufteilung in verschiedenste Gruppen (die „Diversifikation“) mit Riesen und
Zwergen, die Besetzung der freiwerdenden ökologischen Nischen und letztlich hin
zu den Primaten geschah erst nach dem Massenaussterben an der Kreide-Tertiär
(oder Känozoikum) – Grenze (vermutlich ein Meteoriten-Einschlag).
All dies wird in diesem Buch Schritt für Schritt vor dem Leser ausgebreitet.
Hervorzuheben ist dabei auch, dass KEMP sich nicht scheut, kontrovers
diskutierte, offene Fragen zur Evolution dieser Klasse auch als solche
anzusprechen. Da vielfach nicht mehr als kleine Fragmente, Zahnreste oder
einzelne Knochenreste übrig sind, werden Grenzen der Aussagekraft derartiger
Funde angesprochen und es wird deutlich, dass noch viele Lücken in dem Übergang
von den ersten landbewohnenden Tetrapoden hin zu den Säugetieren, wie wir sie
heute kennen zu klären sind.
Das Buch ist unterlegt mit zahlreichen Abbildungen, die oft ganzseitig
ausreichend groß die fossilen Reste darstellen. Dies Buch hat allerdings keine
Lebens-Rekonstruktionen ehemaliger Säugetier-Vorfahren dargestellt. Dennoch ist
es durch die großen und detailreichen Illustrationen ein Leichtes, sich die
einzelnen, z. T. recht ungewöhnlich bizarren Ahnen bildlich vorzustellen.
Der Text baut dabei in zeitlicher Reihenfolge die Entwicklungsgeschichte auf und
es ist – auch wenn nicht vom Fach – der „rote Faden“ der Evolution der
Säugetiere gut nachzuvollziehen. Es gibt nur wenig Vergleichbares und ich selbst
hatte bisher nur auf das aus dem Jahre 1979 stammende Buch von E. THENIUS,
ebenfalls einem „Altmeister“ der Paläontologie, zurückgreifen müssen. Insofern
war diese Aktualisierung ein Gewinn (wenn dies Buch mittlerweile aber auch schon
13 Jahre „alt“ ist). Ein flüssiger Stil macht die Lektüre dieses Buches zu einem
Lesespaß für jeden, der über den „Tellerrand“ der Dinosaurier hinausblicken
möchte.
Ich möchte dies Buch empfehlen, da es kaum Alternativen einer umfassenden
Darstellung der Evolution der Säugetiere auf dem deutsch- oder
englischsprachigen Bereich gibt. Gesamtdarstellungen zur Geschichte der
Vertebraten liegen z. B. von R. CARROLL aus dem Jahre 1993 (Thieme-Verlag) und
von M. BENTON aus dem Jahre 2017 vor. Diese wären alternativ nutzbare Werke, auf
die ich selbst auch gern zurückgreife; da sie allerdings alle Wirbeltiere
abdecken, ist das vorliegende Buch von KEMP deutlich informativer, da es sich
auf die Säugetiere beschränkt. Es ist ein wirklich gelungenes Buch, dem wir
viele weitere, aktualisierte Auflagen wünschen möchten.
