Enterprise software has a long history of being way too complex. It's true that
it offered big improvements over manual processes, but there has always been a
mindset—that even persists today—that the more bells and whistles, the better.
The mindset has been "features equal revenue."
Software as a service (SaaS) has been a giant step forward in consumerizing IT
and improving the user experience. For modern businesses, SaaS adoption is a
leading indicator of revenue. Simplicity equals growth.
PROMOTED
Yet, it can be easy to fall into old habits and mindsets by layering on
features, which leads to complexity. There are well-known examples of SaaS
offerings that have become bloated and wildly complex.
Now we're rapidly entering a new phase of simplicity (I call it Simplicity 3.0),
spurred by necessity and propelled by digital transformation. This new phase
extends simplicity deeper into the stack and into the core of organizational
culture, with important ramifications for modern businesses.

hedgehog knows one big thing." It's easier to know many things than to be the
master of one, but companies that can remain committed to doing one thing
exceptionally well win the day. In the age of APIs and rapid integrations, there
is no reason to settle for anything but the best approach. You no longer need to
rely on a bloated and complex solution to do it all.

Cloud computing and distributed architectures are becoming extremely complex.
This is compounded by large volumes of data and growing cybersecurity threats.

In this environment, the advantages of simplicity go beyond automation and a
great UI. Everything at every level needs to be simplified.
For the user, the service needs to be easy to adopt, learn and use. The
architecture needs to be performant, easy to manage and easy to debug. SaaS
applications need to be operationally simple, minimizing human factors that lead
to breaches or lost data. And it needs to be simple to connect to other
applications, data sources and partners.
Simplicity 3.0 cuts through the stack and spans the customer landscape, making
the entire experience frictionless. Nearly all of Gartner's 12 strategic tech
priorities for 2022 involve very complex technologies aimed at simplifying
various aspects of digital business and infrastructure, from cloud-native
platforms and hyper-automation to total experience.
A hallmark of this next wave of simplicity is explainability. Abstracting away
complexity can oftentimes hide what's happening under the hood and why. In the
era of Simplicity 3.0, accountability and trust are dependent on explainability.
For instance, it's not enough to make billing simple. The customer also needs to
be able to understand the pricing, how to configure it, how to transact and
what's behind a particular recommendation or insight.
Simplicity Is Essential
The sudden shift to remote work two years ago exposed in stark fashion the
drawbacks of complex software and the power of simplicity. Where a simpler
option existed, it won out nearly every time. Think Zoom for communicating or
Amazon for purchasing.
These days, complex means hard to adopt, hard to implement, costly to maintain
and more staff to manage. For IT professionals who are increasingly generalists,
having to manage more systems and applications for a workforce constantly moving
between offices, homes and other remote locations is untenable. Likewise,
changing work habits and talent shortages leave no room for complexity that can
sap productivity, contribute to burnout or chip away at employee satisfaction.
According to the "Impact of Technology in 2022 and Beyond" report by IEEE, CIOs
noted the following as big challenges for them in 2022 (including the percentage
of respondents who ranked each aspect as "very challenging"):
• Maintaining strong cybersecurity for a hybrid workforce: 40%.
• Recruiting technologists and filling open tech positions: 34%.
• Managing return-to-office protocols, apps and data: 29%.
• Determining needed technologies for post-pandemic future: 29%.
Given these realities, simplicity will factor into and even drive tech decisions
and employee adoption.
Simplicity Is Genius
But don't confuse simplicity with "simple." It's not.
Simplicity takes hard work, and increasingly, "simple-washing" won't do. It
requires a sophisticated understanding of and deep empathy for users, along with
advanced technical skills and expertise with modern architectures. Creativity
then brings it all together to achieve higher levels of abstraction, keeping a
critical eye on self-editing any extras. It's an ongoing process of highly
thoughtful engineering.
Beyond the technical aspects, it requires a shift in mindset. As Steve Jobs said
in an interview, "Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to
get your thinking clean and to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end
because once you get there, you can move mountains."
Business leaders need to cultivate a culture centered around simplicity across
every part of the organization and evolve operational models centered around the
perpetual refinement of products and services. It's a job that is never
complete.
After all, the whole point of technology is to make our lives better and easier.
Complexity is competent. Simple is genius.
