RWS NOTIFICATION OF CYBER INCIDENT

WHAT HAS HAPPENED?


We detected signs of unauthorized external access to one of our legacy project
management workflow applications, which supports a small part of our Regulated
Industries division.


WHAT IS THE APPLICATION USED FOR?


The application is used primarily by our linguists and project managers for
client work. There's no client-generated content held on it.


WHEN WAS THE INFORMATION TAKEN?


The information was taken on Monday 10th April.


HOW DID THIS INCIDENT OCCUR?


A third-party was able to gain unauthorised access using compromised external
user details.


WHO WAS BEHIND THIS INCIDENT?


I'm afraid at this stage we don't know. It's not been possible to establish the
identity of who did this.


WERE ANY OTHER RWS SYSTEMS AFFECTED?


No. None of our other systems have been compromised.


WHAT ACTION ARE YOU TAKING TO SUPPORT THE INDIVIDUALS AFFECTED?


We've written to everyone affected, giving them recommendations on what they
need to do next, and offering advice and support where appropriate.


WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO REASSURE INDIVIDUALS THAT THIS WON’T HAPPEN AGAIN?


We continue to partner with cyber security experts and are complying with all
our regulatory obligations. All external facing access has been removed from the
application.


HAVE YOU REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO THE RELEVANT INFORMATION REGULATOR(S)?


Yes. We've reported the incident to the relevant information regulators. We've
notified the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), and notified the UK’s
Information Commissioner's Office. We have ongoing communications with them
about the incident.


IS THE INCIDENT CONTAINED?


Yes. We're confident that none of our other systems have been affected.


HOW DID YOU DISCOVER THE INCIDENT?


Our security systems detected the problem and alerted us to it.


IS THERE EXTERNAL ACCESS TO MY PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION (PII)?


No. All external access has been removed so the service can now only be accessed
from inside the RWS network and the application has been rebuilt from our
secure, clean backups using industry standard authentication methods.


IS MY PERSONAL MACHINE COMPROMISED?


No. Your computer, tablet or mobile phone, whichever you use, isn't affected.


WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN THE INCIDENT AND NOTIFYING ME THAT THIS HAS
HAPPENED?


We immediately enacted our contingency protocols, temporarily shutting down the
application. External cyber security experts were appointed to investigate the
circumstances. Now that we understand the scale of the incident and who was
impacted, we can now communicate with you what happened.


CAN YOU CONFIRM WHETHER ANY OF MY PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION HAS BEEN
TAKEN?


Our investigations indicate that your personal information, so your name,
business email address and business telephone number, may have been exposed in
the incident.
