Itinerary
Head to Emilia Romagna, an Italian province known for its prosperous towns of
hospitable people and regal palazzi, and some of the country's "most
soul-satisfying food" (Lonely Planet). You’ll be in a small group (maximum 18
guests), and you’ll get an experienced, English-speaking guide throughout your
stay.
You’ll spend five nights in the postcard-perfect centre of Bologna. Your deluxe
hotel is housed in a 12th-century former town hall, next to the city’s main
church, that is meticulously preserved with vaulted ceilings, and a rich
collection of antique art.
On day two, you'll go on a walking tour through the Medieval centre, where you
can admire the Fountain of Neptune, the impressive Bologna Cathedral, and visit
the Quadrilatero crafts market. After working up an appetite, you’ll stop by a
food stall at the lively Mercato dell Erbe.
Next, you'll perfect your pasta-cooking skills by attending a class at the FICO
Eataly (admission included) on the outskirts of the city, on day three. It is an
interactive food theme park introducing visitors to Italian cuisine, from wine
and cheese to pizza and gelato. You'll learn to make tagliatelle—mastered in the
region for centuries—and enjoy light lunch after your hard work.
On day four you'll visit Parma, a city of Renaissance splendour, that is also
the birthplace of fresh-from-the-attic Prosciutto ham, and carefully aged
Parmesan cheese. Take a leisurely walking tour along cobbled streets before
visiting the Parma Ham Museum for light lunch that covers cold cuts, fried
bread, and wine from the surrounding hills. In the afternoon, you'll learn about
cheese making, complete with tastings, and a glass of Lambrusco or Malvasia
wine.
A trip to this picturesque part of Italy couldn't be complete without an
excursion to Modena, one of the nation's great gastronomic centres. Hear about
the opera singer, Luciano Pavarotti, and the luxury sport cars, Ferrari and
Maserati—all born in this wonderful city—during a gentle walking tour. You'll
also visit an 'acetaia', where you can sample scented balsamic vinegars,
originating from this very town. Day five concludes with a farewell dinner in
Bologna, before you fly back home to the UK next morning, most likely with local
delicacies hiding in your luggage.
