For more than a decade, Penn’s Dan Huh has been developing super-small devices
called organs-on-chips that use living cells to stand in for larger organs. In
May 2019, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched two experiments with Huh’s
organs-on-chips to the International Space Station. In orbit, a lung chip and
bone marrow chip are being compared to Earth-bound counterparts to shed light on
astronauts’ susceptibility to infection.

INVENTING THE FUTURE

INVESTING IN AI AT PENN ENGINEERING

Meet some of the key architects of Penn’s programs in AI and data science in a
discussion hosted by Vijay Kumar, Nemirosvky Family Dean of Penn Engineering
with Board members Rajendra Singh (PAR’10, PAR’11), Harlan Stone (C’80, PAR’13)
and Fred Warren (ME’60, WG’61, PAR’87, PAR’19).

2024 COMMENCEMENT

Penn Engineering recently hosted commencement ceremonies in celebration of the
2024 Penn Engineering graduates. Watch highlights from the undergraduate and
master’s ceremonies here.

ENGINEERING AN OLYMPIAN

Penn Engineering student Matt Fallon, CIS’25, W’25, is heading to Paris to
compete for the 2024 U.S. Olympic team. In June, Fallon earned his spot after
breaking the American record in the 200-meter breaststroke at the Olympic Trials
in Indianapolis.

LOOKING TO AI TO SOLVE ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE

To combat the global crisis of antibiotic resistance, a team led by César de la
Fuente, Presidential Assistant Professor at Penn Engineering, has developed a
way to discover new antibiotics from ancient molecules using AI. Antibiotic
Peptide de-Extinction (APEX), the team’s new tool, rapidly identifies potential
drug candidates from extinct organisms like woolly mammoths and giant elk,
turning the tree of life into a treasure trove of new molecules.

BREWING BRILLIANCE

Nader Engheta, H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor in Electrical and Systems Engineering
(ESE), regularly joins his colleague Firooz Aflatouni, associate professor and
undergraduate chair in ESE, for a cup of tea. Together, the pair discuss
history, politics, and of course, science.  Most recently, the two devised a
novel chip that uses light rather than electricity to perform vector-matrix
multiplication, a key mathematical operation in the training of neural networks.
