From Private and Insular to Public and Engaged: The History of Science in the
Century
Since Sarton
In August 2004, the Circulation of Knowledge conference—co-organized by the
Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science, the BSHS, and the
HSS—challenged the then-dominant centre-periphery model of scientific knowledge
origin and dissemination and led to the creation of the international research
networks Situating Science and Cosmopolitanism and the Local.

Much has happened since then, and it is time not only to take stock, but to open
new research avenues in HPS and STS.
