You can learn more by reading our FAQ section below. Last updated: 11/09/2021 KEEPING YOU INFORMED AND SAFE A COVID-19 vaccine, designed to prevent the COVID-19 disease, is the best hope for ending the pandemic. Mercy Health is confident in the safety of all vaccines approved for emergency use authorization (EUA) in the United States and recommends everyone gets vaccinated as soon as they are eligible. We know you may still have questions and concerns about these vaccines. That's why Mercy Health is committed to keeping you and our communities informed. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Questions about the COVID-19 Vaccine? Call 1-833-247-1258. Call volumes may cause longer wait times. The Pfizer vaccine for kids ages 5-11 are available at select locations. Learn More FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS There are many questions about the COVID-19 vaccine. We’ve heard you and put together a list of answers to the most asked questions. GETTING VACCINATED (WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW) WHO CAN GET THE COVID VACCINE? The vaccine is now available for everyone age 5 and older. WHAT IS A VACCINE? Think of a vaccine as a way for your immune system to practice for an infection. Vaccines give the body a preview of a virus or bacteria before you get the real deal. The immune system then learns and remembers how to react. This helps the body stop the virus or bacteria from making you sick if you are exposed to it. WILL THE VACCINE PROTECT AGAINST VARIANTS? Current data suggest that COVID-19 vaccines authorized for use in the United States offer protection against most variants. However, some variants might cause illness in some people after they are fully vaccinated. HOW ARE VACCINE APPOINTMENTS SCHEDULED? HOW DO I GET SIGNED UP? In some locations, Mercy Health is scheduling vaccines online for eligible community members as supply allows. Please check our vaccine scheduling page for up-to-date scheduling information. If there are no appointments, please continue to check back for openings. WHEN CAN I GET A COVID VACCINE? All persons ages 5 and older are now eligible to receive the vaccine. Visit the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services website for more information. HOW DO THE COVID VACCINES WORK? The COVID-19 vaccine gives your immune system a preview of the coronavirus, so it learns how to stop it. It triggers antibodies in your blood to attack the virus’s unique spike protein. (Did you know, coronaviruses got their name because they have protein spikes that look like a crown?) Your immune system learns from the vaccine how to quickly recognize the actual virus and stop it from multiplying. The idea is to stop SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, from getting into cells, replicating itself and making you sick. HOW MANY DOSES ARE NEEDED AND CAN I SKIP A DOSE? Additional doses or booster doses are recommended for some people. Please see the links below for information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). * COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shots * COVID-19 Vaccines for Moderately to Severely Immunocompromised People CAN THE VACCINE GIVE ME THE VIRUS? No. None of the COVID-19 vaccines are made with a live virus. They cannot give you COVID-19. DOES A PERSON WHO HAS ALREADY BEEN SICK WITH COVID NEED TO BE VACCINATED? Due to the severe health risks associated with COVID-19 and the fact that re-infection with COVID-19 is possible, it is recommended everyone eligible get a COVID-19 vaccine-even if they have been sick with COVID-19 before. At this time, experts do not know how long someone is protected from getting sick again after recovering from COVID-19. The immunity someone gains from having an infection, called natural immunity, varies from person to person. Some early evidence suggests natural immunity may not last very long. HOW LONG DOES THE VACCINE PROTECT FOR? WILL A BOOSTER SHOT BE NEEDED? According to the CDC, those who are fully vaccinated will continue to be protected against serious illness and hospitalization. However, some study data suggests that immunity may decrease over time for those who were fully vaccinated. The CDC and FDA recommend you receive a third dose of the mRNA (Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech’s Comirnaty) vaccine if you are immunocompromised and received the vaccine at least four weeks prior. This is different from a booster dose because it’s part of the primary vaccination for people who are immunocompromised. The CDC and FDA also recommend you receive the Moderna or Comirnaty vaccine booster dose if you received the Moderna or Comirnaty vaccine at least 6 months ago and are: * Aged 65+ OR * A resident aged 18+ in long-term care settings OR * Aged 50–64 years with a broad range of underlying medical conditions * Work in health care or another setting where you are at increased risk of being exposed to the virus The Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine booster dose is recommended by the CDC and FDA for everyone 18 years and older who received the J&J vaccine at least 2 months ago or the Comirnaty or Moderna vaccine at least 6 months ago. CAN A WOMAN WHO IS PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING OR TRYING TO GET PREGNANT RECEIVE THE VACCINE? Yes, the vaccination is recommended for people who are trying to get pregnant, are pregnant, breastfeeding, or may become pregnant in the future. Data from thousands of people who are pregnant, breast-feeding and those who became pregnant after vaccination confirms that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective before, during and after pregnancy. In fact, the CDC has issued a health alert recommending those who are pregnant, recently gave birth, are breast-feeding, or trying to become pregnant receive a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible. The CDC V-Safe data shows no increase in adverse outcomes in pregnant people who receive the COVID-19 vaccine. There is also no evidence linking vaccines to infertility. The risks of COVID-19 infection outweigh any known or potential risks of vaccination while pregnant or trying to conceive. Pregnant women are at a higher risk to get ill with COVID-19 compared with non-pregnant women. A study was conducted before the Delta variant; results published by the Journal of the American Medicine Association showed pregnant women with COVID infection are 15 times more likely to die in hospital, 14 times more likely to require intubation and 22 times more likely to have a premature birth. See the CDC’s COVID-19 Vaccines While Pregnant or Breastfeeding info page. I HAVE A CONDITION THAT MAKES ME IMMUNOCOMPROMISED. SHOULD I RECEIVE THE VACCINE? Yes. People who are immunocompromised are more likely to be hospitalized and get seriously ill from COVID-19. It’s recommended you get vaccinated if you are immunocompromised. These people may not get as much protection after two doses of the vaccine as do people with normal immune systems. For that reason, a third dose of the vaccine is now recommended 28 days after the second dose. It’s recommended that the third dose comes from same manufacturer as the first two doses. This only applies to Moderna and Pfizer vaccines (not Johnson & Johnson). If you are immunocompromised, discuss the vaccine with your doctor for a personalized recommendation. DO THE VACCINES PROTECT AGAINST THE NEW COVID-19 VARIANTS, SUCH AS THE DELTA VARIANT? The vaccines authorized are highly effective at preventing severe disease, death, and provide protection from the Delta variant. The vaccines are not 100% effective and some fully vaccinated people may experience illness. It’s important that as many people as possible get vaccinated to slow the spread of variants. Delta Variant: What We Know About the Science | CDC IS THE COVID-19 VACCINE SAFE? We are confident the COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective with the FDA’s emergency use authorizations and now permanent approval of the Pfizer vaccine. The vaccines passed numerous, required safety checks and study of reported side effects or adverse events. Several months of data have shown us the vaccines are safe and effective. CHILDREN AND THE VACCINE (INFORMATION FOR PARENTS) WHAT COVID-19 VACCINES ARE AVAILABLE FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS? Authorized For Pfizer-BioNTech Moderna J&J/Janssen 4 years and under No No No 5-11 years old Yes No No 12-17 years old Yes No No 18 years and older Yes Yes Yes HOW CAN THE FDA REVIEW DATA FOR UNDER 12 VACCINATIONS SO QUICKLY? Data from the full clinical trials are reviewed by multi-disciplinary experts following submission by vaccine manufacturers. The FDA expects this review will take place in weeks instead of months due to added funding to dedicate time and additional resources to a quick, but thorough review. ARE COVID-19 VACCINES SAFE? Yes, COVID-19 vaccines approved for emergency use authorization (EUA) in the United States are safe. The vaccines go through the same testing and clinical trials as all vaccines and no serious safety concerns have been identified. CAN MY CHILD GET THE VACCINE? The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for emergency use for those ages 5 and older. * COVID-19 Vaccines for Children and Teens WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF VACCINATING CHILDREN? While most children are at lower risk for severe illness from COVID-19, there are still many unknown long-term effects. While uncommon, it is also possible for children infected with COVID-19 to become seriously ill or worse. Vaccination also allows for a safer return to activities and normal life. Vaccination will: * Help prevent the risk of serious illness including Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) * Help prevent long-term effects of COVID-19 * Reduce the risk of passing COVID-19 infection to family members and others at high-risk for severe illness from COVID-19 HOW EFFECTIVE ARE COVID-19 VACCINES IN CHILDREN AGES 5-11? Clinical trials show COVID-19 vaccines are very effective in children ages 5-11, preventing 90.7% of symptomatic infections. In fact, data shows the immune response for children was very similar to that of trial participants ages 16-25, even with the lower dosage administered to children. WILL KIDS GET THE SAME DOSE OF THE VACCINES AS ADULTS? Children ages 5 through 11 years receive an age-appropriate dose that is one-third of the adult dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Smaller needles, designed specifically for children, are also used for children ages 5 through 11 years. COULD COVID-19 VACCINES IMPACT PUBERTY OR MENSTRUATION? There is no clinical evidence to suggest COVID vaccines have effects on puberty or fertility. WILL COVID-19 VACCINES BE REQUIRED BY SCHOOLS? It will be up to each state’s government to decide whether a COVID-19 vaccine is required for school entry. ARE OTHER COUNTRIES GIVING COVID-19 VACCINES TO CHILDREN? Multiple other countries have approved Covid vaccines for children ages 12-15. Other countries are reviewing data and are expected to approve vaccination for children ages 5-11 soon. HOW DO THE MRNA (PFIZER/MODERNA) VACCINES WORK? Messenger RNA (mRNA) instructs your cells how to build immunity to the virus that causes COVID-19. mRNA is found in all living cells. It CANNOT combine with our DNA to change our genetic code because it can’t enter the nucleus of the cell where DNA is found. WILL THE COVID-19 VACCINE AFFECT PUBERTY, GROWTH OR FERTILITY? The COVID-19 vaccines will not affect puberty, growth, or fertility since they can’t alter cells. After mRNA vaccine instructs our body starts to make antibodies to fight COVID, the enzymes in our bodies chop up the mRNA into pieces, and it’s gone within days! WHAT ARE THE OTHER INGREDIENTS IN THE PFIZER COVID-19 VACCINE? The vaccines consist largely of fat, salt, and sugar. Lipids, such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), are the "fatty layer" that protects the delicate mRNA so it has time to work before getting chopped up. Potassium chloride, monobasic potassium phosphate, sodium chloride and dibasic sodium phosphate dihydrate and sucrose are just fancy names for some salts and sugar. These ingredients help keep the vaccine stable and are natural preservatives. IF MY CHILD ALREADY HAD THE COVID-19 INFECTION, DO THEY STILL NEED THE VACCINE? Yes. The natural immunity produced by the body after a COVID-19 infection isn’t as strong as immunity produced by the vaccine. The vaccine gives protection and prevents hospitalization for several of the COVID variants. HAS THE VACCINE BEEN OUT LONG ENOUGH TO BE TRUSTED? Yes. The mRNA vaccines are not new. They have been studied for over 10 years for other coronaviruses, such as SARS (2003) in China and MERS (2012) in the Middle East. The new part is that they now focus on SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes COVID-19 illness. As of July 2021, the Pfizer vaccine has been given to over 185 million people! Since it has given to so many with very few complications over almost a year now, there is a lot of confidence in the safety of the COVID vaccine. We now know that COVID complications from the disease can be MUCH worse (especially with Delta variant) than complications we have seen with the vaccine. WHY IS VACCINATION NOW MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER? As of July 2021, over 4.1 million COVID-19 pediatric cases have been reported. The CDC estimates 209,254 pediatric hospitalizations in the U.S. As of May 2021, there have been 3,742 cases of MIS-C, a serious health condition affecting multiple organs that has been linked to COVID-19 infection. Over 400 pediatric deaths have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic. Although this seems low compared to adults, COVID is now one of the top 10 causes of death for adolescents in the United States. Long COVID has also been reported among kids. The British National Health Service is reporting that 7-8% of kids experience long-term side effects of COVID. The Delta Variant has changed the game. It is 200% more transmissible and results in up to 1000x higher viral load compared to previous variants. On average, one person sick with the Delta Variant infects 6-10 people. More quarantine, worsening mental health and school concerns: Those teens without the vaccine will likely face more quarantines and more isolation from school, sports, and other activities. This can lead to increased mental health concerns in teens. WHAT ABOUT CONCERNS OF MYOCARDITIS? In extremely rare cases, recipients of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines have developed myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart. This reaction was not observed in Pfizer’s clinical trial for children aged 5-11. While the remote possibility of myocarditis cannot be ruled out, the benefits of the vaccine still outweigh the risks. COVID-19 infection is far more likely to cause myocarditis than the vaccine, and infection can lead to other serious complications. HOW WILL THE FDA ENSURE THE SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF COVID-19 VACCINES IN CHILDREN? * Completed clinical trials with children including a follow-up period of at least two months * Manufacturers analyze clinical trial data to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine. The FDA works closely with manufacturers to ensure data analysis meets regulatory standards. * After a full evaluation, manufacturers request an emergency use authorization (EUA) or submit for permanent approval through a biologics license application (BLA). * The FDA evaluates the data in an independent review evaluating the benefits and risks. * The FDA approves or denies the EUA or BLA request based on its findings. CAN I ASK MY PEDIATRICIAN TO VACCINATE MY KIDS NOW? Children are still developing. Vaccine doses being studied in younger children are different than those for adults and children ages 12 and older. Clinical trials are important before vaccinating young kids to ensure the vaccine is likely to prevent COVID-19 and doesn’t cause unexpected safety issues. HOW CAN I PROTECT MY CHILDREN UNTIL THEY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR VACCINATION? The best way is for all adults around them to get vaccinated. Children should also wear masks as recommended and follow other precautions until they can receive vaccination. WILL WE NEED BOOSTER SHOTS EVERY YEAR? Additional doses or booster doses are recommended for some people. Please see the links below for information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). * COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shots * COVID-19 Vaccines for Moderately to Severely Immunocompromised People WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SIDE EFFECTS FOR KIDS AGE 5-11? Side effects that have been reported are mild to moderate such as fever, fatigue, headache, chills, diarrhea, or muscle aches. More kids reported side effects with the second dose compared to the first dose. Rare side effects can happen, such as swollen lymph nodes or skin sensitivity, but these are not long-term and resolved in most cases in a few days. ARE THERE ANY LONG-TERM SIDE EFFECTS? Side effects are generally mild and resolve quickly. Long-term side effects are unlikely, as clinical studies demonstrated safety for multiple months past the typical timeframe for vaccine reactions. CAN KIDS BECOME VERY SICK WITH COVID? COVID-19 disease in kids can range from no symptoms to severe illness. * As of October 2021, over 6.3 million COVID-19 pediatric cases have been reported. * Only 43% of kids under 12 have natural immunity. * 30% of hospitalizations for kids with COVID-19 had no underlying medical conditions. As of October 2021, there were 5,217 MIS-C cases linked to COVID-19 in kids. This multi-organ system effect makes children extremely ill and requires hospitalization, often in the ICU. * Long COVID, or lingering COVID-19 symptoms, can lead to learning problems, heart problems, exercise fatigue with sports, and respiratory issues. This has been reported in about 8% of children who have had COVID-19. * Since the pandemic began, over 600 pediatric deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported. It is now a top 10 cause of death for kids in the United States. WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS? * Lipids: This "fatty layer" protects the delicate mRNA so it has time to work before getting chopped up. Polyethylene glycol (PEG), the most famous lipid, is also the main ingredient in MiraLAX (which you know about if your child has ever been constipated). * Potassium chloride, monobasic potassium phosphate, sodium chloride, and dibasic sodium phosphate dihydrate and sucrose: These fancy names are just salt, some electrolytes, and sugar. These ingredients help keep the vaccine stable and are natural preservatives. IS THERE LESS QUARANTINE FROM SCHOOL, SPORTS, OR ACTIVITIES IF VACCINATED? Yes. This pandemic has been traumatizing, especially for children. Their lives were abruptly disrupted in March 2020, and their mental and physical health has suffered. Anxiety and depression rates are up. Based on the State of Michigan's current guidelines, students who are vaccinated and exposed to COVID-19 can remain in school and wear a mask. We know that less quarantining will only benefit all children. AFTER VACCINATION WHEN AM I CONSIDERED FULLY VACCINATED? The vaccine requires two doses three or four weeks apart, depending upon vaccine. Immunity takes some time to develop- at least two weeks after last the last injection. For example, someone vaccinated in late December won’t be fully protected until late January or early February. WHAT ARE COMMON VACCINE SIDE EFFECTS? Side effects are like other vaccines. The most common side effects are pain/redness at the injection site, headache, fatigue, muscle/joint aches and low-grade fever. The side effects respond well to Tylenol and ibuprofen. Most side effects last less than 24 hours and those ages 55 and older reporter fewer side effects. WHAT CAN I DO AFTER I AM FULLY VACCINATED? According to the CDC, fully vaccinated people can: * Visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing * Visit with unvaccinated people (including children) from a single household who are at low risk for severe COVID-19 disease indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing * Participate in outdoor activities and recreation without a mask, except in certain crowded settings and venues * Resume domestic travel and refrain from testing before or after travel or self-quarantine after travel * Refrain from testing before leaving the United States for international travel (unless required by the destination) and refrain from self-quarantine after arriving back in the United States * Refrain from testing following a known exposure, if asymptomatic, with some exceptions for specific settings * Refrain from quarantine following a known exposure if asymptomatic * Refrain from routine screening testing if asymptomatic and feasible FOR NOW, FULLY VACCINATED PEOPLE SHOULD CONTINUE TO: * Take precautions in indoor public settings like wearing a well-fitted mask * Wear well-fitted masks when visiting indoors with unvaccinated people who are at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease or who have an unvaccinated household member who is at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease * Wear well-fitted masks when visiting indoors with unvaccinated people from multiple households * Avoid indoor large-sized in-person gatherings * Get tested if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms * Follow guidance issued by individual employers * Follow CDC and health department travel requirements and recommendations I’VE BEEN FULLY VACCINATED BUT AM HAVING COVID-19 SYMPTOMS. SHOULD I GET TESTED? Although the risk that fully vaccinated people could become infected with COVID-19 is low, any fully vaccinated person who experiences symptoms consistent with COVID-19 should isolate themselves from others, be clinically evaluated for COVID-19, and tested for COVID-19, if indicated. The symptomatic fully vaccinated person should inform their healthcare provider of their vaccination status at the time of care.
