You’ll run through 14 unique neighborhoods featuring festivals, bands, and cheerathoners who will keep each of you motivated and smiling all the way to the finish line. The FedEx Pittsburgh Marathon Relay … * Is a USA Track & Field-certified course, * Hosts 16 medical aid stations throughout the course, * Offers water and Nuun Hydration carbohydrate + Electrolyte pre-mixed drinks at 18 fluid stations strategically located throughout the course, as well as Honey Stinger gels at three locations along the course and salty snacks (such as potato chips or pretzels) at select locations along the course. Your team’s captain will register the team and be automatically registered as a team member when they pay the registration fee for the entire team. Then each team member can register separately and will officially join the team as part of the registration process. Please note that team captains do not need to register a second time as a team member. Travelling to Relay Exchanges One and Two: Because of race day traffic and closures, it is recommended that most FedEx Pittsburgh Marathon Relay participants walk to exchange zones one and two from the Downtown area. Travelling to Relay Exchanges Three and Four: Shuttle buses will be available on race day to transport relay runners to exchange zones three and four only. Shuttles will depart from Downtown on Centre Avenue between 6th Avenue and Chatham Street starting at 6 a.m. You should plan to arrive at your Relay Exchange at least 30 minutes before your teammate’s expected arrival. If you are taking shuttles, plan on a 3-minute bus ride. Shuttles will operate until the Relay Exchange zone closes. #MOVEPITTSBURGH FREE TRAINING PLANS We've put together FREE training plans to get you prepped for marathon weekend. Find them here! Athletes who participate in these events may be subject to drug testing conducted by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) or other licensed entity. Athletes with positive drug test results will forfeit any prize money and will be disqualified from the event in which such athlete participated. How does gear check work? * You must use a race-issued clear Gear Check bag (which you can get at the Health & Fitness Expo) and corresponding Gear Check tag (attached to your bib). * Luggage bags, oversized or overnight items, loose articles, or bags that are not race-issue will not be accepted at Gear Check * Do not check valuable items such as medication, jewelry, cell phones, cameras, electronic devices, etc. The event is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items. * You must show your bib number when dropping off and picking up your gear. * Runners will NOT be permitted to bring or carry bags into the start line corrals. All bags must be checked into Gear Check prior to the start of the race. Do you really enforce the time limit? It really depends on what else is going on in the City of Pittsburgh during race weekend. Sometimes there’s some wiggle room that can allow for a little extra time on the course in addition to the 16-minute-per-mile pace limit. Sometimes, though, there’s not, and if you’re unable to maintain the overall pace, you might be asked to move to the sidewalk or board the sweep vehicle. Just to make sure we’re being 100% clear, the 16-minute-per-mile pace limit means you just need to average a 16-minute mile throughout the whole course. If you are walking and the first mile takes you 18 minutes but it only takes you 14 minutes the next mile, that’s still an average of 16 minutes per mile. Asking you to move to the sidewalk or board the sweep vehicle is absolutely the last thing we want to do. At P3R, we don’t care whether you’re running a 6-minute mile or walking a 15-minute mile - we’re just thrilled that you are MOVING and doing something good for yourself. Can team members walk their relay legs? Due to course time limits and the need to reopen the streets on time, we are only able to offer the official walking category to the half marathon. Participants in the marathon relay will still need to maintain an average pace of 16 minutes per mile. (An average pace of 16 minutes per mile means that if you take 18 minutes to MOVE through the first mile and 14 minutes to MOVE through the second mile, you’ve averaged 16 minutes per mile for those 2 miles.) Several marathon relay participants use a run-walk-run approach to complete the 26.2-mile course, so as the team maintains the 16 minute-per-mile maximum pace, you’re good to go! TOP QUESTIONS How does the marathon relay work? The FedEx Pittsburgh Marathon Relay course is the same as the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon course. The 2-5 person relay offers a distance for everyone, regardless of their fitness level. We encourage you to review the 2022 Relay Handbook (which we will update with any new information before the 2023 event!). How does my team register for the relay? Your team captain will need to register first and pay the registration fee on behalf of the entire team. They will automatically be registered as a team member when they do, and they do not need to register a second time as a team member. After the team captain registers the team, the rest of the team can sign up to join. Is our team required to have five members? No, your team can have 2-5 members. Where is the course map? We expect to release the 2023 course map in January 2023. Click here to review the 2022 course. What’s the time limit for the marathon relay? The overall course pace requirement is 16:00 minutes per mile. If you are unable to adhere to the permitted pace per mile, you may be asked to board a sweep vehicle. If you refuse to board the vehicle when asked, you must move to the sidewalk so traffic can resume. If you choose to continue after the roads have reopened, there will be no medical support, fluid stations, or course marshals at intersections, and the course will no longer be marked. Participants after that time will not be guaranteed a time or finisher’s medal. FIVE REASONS TO RUN THE FEDEX PITTSBURGH MARATHON RELAY 1) You can choose the relay leg that works best for YOU.
