Four hikers were rescued off rocks in Diamond Harbour after being trapped by a
fire on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called around 4.25pm on Tuesday to a developing scrub
fire at Stoddart Point Reserve near the water of Lyttelton Harbour. The fire was
extinguished by 6.30pm.

Volunteers on Coastguard’s Lyttelton crew rescued four people who were trapped
by the flames while hiking, and returned them to a safe place, Coastguard
communications manager Kimberly Waters said.

Two fire trucks, a tanker and a helicopter were called to fight the fire, along
with a couple of support vehicles according to Fire and Emergency New Zealand
(FENZ).

FENZ Shift Manager Daryl Ball said the area was difficult to access, which was
why they had called in the helicopter.

Peninsula.
