SOME OTHER THINGS ABOUT ME...

I named myself Ingrid after Ingrid Bergman in Grade 5 because I didn't like the
name Annie (given by my kindergarten teacher ). I am a fine artist turned
illustrator turned graphic designer. Because of this, I am naturally drawn to
all things creative: art, literature , fashion, music, and film… I combine bits
from all of my interests to form my creative concepts.⋆ ˚｡⋆୨୧˚


I STARTED DESIGNING 'CAUSE...

ฅ՞•ﻌ•՞ฅ My very first undergrad professor taught me how to make a simple
saddle-stitch zine, and it was non-stop explorations of zine and book forms from
then on. My great passion for making zines and looking at them kept growing.
Then, with the will to improve the content of my zines, I took some design
classes, which opened the door to this path called graphic design for me. I
slowly realized how much I enjoy typography, editorial design, and book design:
I loved seeing typography and I enjoy tangible objects — holding publications,
touching paper, and studying various binding…

ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ With a new passion for graphic design and an obsession with printed
matters, I got into discovering old and contemporary periodicals. I was drawn to
how “anti-timeless” they are. Reading a volume of a magazine is like studying a
piece of a very time-specific culture in a curated, designed stack of paper. One
of my biggest pastimes in college was scouting both old and contemporary
publications in bookstores, thrift stores, and on eBay. I was looking at all the
popular names like Flaneur, Adbuster, IDEA Magazine, and Ray Gun. Then, during a
class visit to the Herb Lubalin Center of Design and Typography, I was
introduced to the story of Ralph Ginzburg's Fact Magazine and Eros, along with
other cool publications I didn't know before such as COLORS and Nest. I was
intrigued by the nonchalant naming of huH, and Blah Blah Blah; I was buying
books about magazines…



ᕦʕ •ᴥ•ʔᕤ This love for printed matter then transformed into an interest in cool
websites as I interned at Wix one summer. I browsed through hundreds of websites
being woahed by their designs and surprising interactions. As my Are.na boards
Editorial Design and Type Stuff and Cool Websites grew, the urge to pursue
graphic design solidified. I realized how much limitations spark my creativity:
whether it be facing the technical aspects of printing, or creating intriguing
layouts and interactions for the web while maintaining functionality.

♫⋆₊˚ MUSIC ASSOCIATIONS ⊹°₊🎧✩

▶• |l|l|l|l|l|l. Music has always been a big part of my life, even though I
don't produce my own. Like most people, I listen to music almost constantly, but
it wasn't until my freshman year of college that I started to bond with people
over music and create memories around music. ♡°♪~₊✧At the end of freshman year,
the idea of “time traveling with music” started growing in my head as I noticed
how certain albums and songs brought up the crisp visuals of some places and
emotions from the past. I knew this was not a new concept I had created, but
recognizing it consciously really added more depth to how I felt about and
listened to music. This contextualized how music became a medium for me to
access my memories and feelings. ✩₊♬♪܀⊹Ever since then, I have been revisiting
this idea, which later grew into my senior thesis — Lines & Notes & Everything
in Between: a publication that explores different aspects of music association:
music visualization, music with memories, music with physical space, how our
brain reacts to listening to music , and why we still hold onto physical objects
of music in this digital age . ✩♬ ₊˚. Through interviews with strangers and
self-reflection, I inspected how humans unknowingly connect through music and
utilize book forms to reflect conceptual ideas.

࣪˖✎ᝰ✧ FORM--CONTENT‧₊˚⋅୭𖥔

𓍢ִ໋˚ ༘⋆｡Bookmaking for me started as an exercise to create tangible items that
live outside of a screen and a fun game to “cross out”, learn, and archive all
the bookbinding techniques that I see . Naturally, ༻✧˖°. I began to incorporate
the book structures I learned into my art and design works as I was no longer
satisfied with having the content and the book being two separate entities
conceptually . This new approach, combined with my love for printing, paper, and
binding became my essential creative process; “How do the materiality and
structure of my books/zines reflect the contents?” became the question that
drives my creations. ⋆.ೃ࿔*:･ So, there born My Life Was A Sleep Paralysis and I
Am Always Here for You — my research on third-culture kids through my own
experiences in narrative book forms. The accordion structure of the first issue
is a visual representation of my childhood timeline moving between various
cities , and the sewn-in vellum booklets represent all the fragmented memories.
*ੈ✩‧₊˚The second volume shows my aunt's perspective on being the caretaker of
four kids (me, my sister, and my cousins). There are cards with English
translations in the French fold page pockets , type-set at the very bottom as an
Easter egg, reflecting the surprise when a casual conversation turns into a
serious interview.

*ੈ✩𓍢ִ໋🀦 CULTURAL IDENTIRY𓇢𓆸𓍢ִ໋ ༘˚

‧₊˚❀༉‧₊˚. Besides using form and materials to reflect contents, My Life Was A
Sleep Paralysis also centers around my cultural identity. I moved around a lot
when I was little, bouncing between Taiwan-China-Canada. While I am grateful for
my childhood, I constantly search for the connection between me and my
birthplace besides the little green booklet that declares my Taiwanese
citizenship. °❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:･ Growing up all over the place left my heart with so much
void, all the cities I have loved… every time I moved, a piece of me was left
there , and I was never fully home anywhere again. Living in North America for 8
years without many Mandarin-speaking close friends only drove this confusion
further, and I began having discourses with others about the cultural identity
crisis, the indications behind being multilingual and having accents, and what
counts as home . *ੈ𑁍༘⋆ I recognized my growing interest in this subject and
started to create works around it; sometimes about my own stories, and sometimes
through interviews with others. Everyone holds some sort of cultural identity,
whether “straight-forward” or complicated, this is a topic that many can relate
to, and I enjoy making works that generate conversations and that people
resonate with.

ﾟ*:ꔫ*﹤INTERNET CULTURE﹥*ꔫ:*

૮꒰˵• ﻌ •˵꒱ა₊˚ Growing up in between two generations, I witnessed the shift of
popular culture being broadcasted on the radio and printed media to the Internet
. I was intrigued by the way people use the web to document, archive, and
develop old and new trends, sub-cultures, and hobbies. ฅ۶•ﻌ•ฅ ꩝ I often look
into how people engage in internet communities, whether it be a social platform
like Tumblr and MySpace, or niche groups like knitting sub-Reddit, fan pages of
musical bands, or vintage-tee-trading Facebook groups. As someone who is
chronically online and surrounded by loving friends who are also into internet
cultures, I love to investigate how trends and humor grow online . This
fascination manifests in my work as I incorporate my personal interests and
internet aesthetics and touches of humor into my projects, in the hopes of
connecting my work with broader audiences who also engaged in the world of web
sub-cultures. ૮ - ﻌ • ა I coded this light-hearted website filled with hints of
the coquette and Y2K aesthetic , and mean girls' and femme fatale tone; all held
up together by the random-nonsensical nature of internet humor. The people who
get it, get it; the ones who don't, don't.
