%80%99s%20Alien%20and%20John%20Carpenter%E2%80%99s%20The%20Thing,%20as%20well%20as%20eldritch%20horror%20literature%20in%20the%20vein%20of%20H.P.%20Lovecraft%E2%80%99s%20Cthulhu%20mythos.%20Topped%20off%20with%20a%20healthy%20dose%20of%20gothic%20aesthetic%20that%20speaks%20of%20my%20own%20ghoulish%20sensibility.%C2%A0%20For%20this%20story,%20I%20had%20to%20really%20look%20inward.%20Rex,%20by%20extension,%20is%20a%20version%20of%20myself%20whose%20own%20personal%20journey%20mirrors%20my%20own%20in%20many%20ways.%20Confronted%20by%20his%20past%20in%20this%20new%20story,%20he%20will%20forever%20be%20hunted%20by%20it%20if%20he%20does%20not%20turn%20and%20face%20it.%20I%20wrote%20the%20majority%20of%20this%20book%20while%20I%20was%20losing%20my%20mother%20to%20cancer,%20and%20like%20Rex,%20learned%20that%20I%20had%20to%20let%20go%20of%20the%20fear%20of%20uncertainty%20that%20comes%20from%20being%20a%20child%20and%20embrace%20the%20responsibilities%20of%20being%20an%20adult.%20That%20has%20been%20one%20of%20the%20greatest%20things%20about%20writing%20Rex%E2%80%99s%20story%20because%20in%20many%20respects,%20it%20feels%20like%20I%E2%80%99ve%20been%20writing%20my%20own.%C2%A0%20%C2%A0As%20for%20how%20I%20like%20to%20approach%20crafting%20the%20narrative,%20I%E2%80%99d%20say%20I%20straddle%20the%20line%20between%20plotting%20out%20the%20story%20while%20feeling%20it%20out%20as%20I%20go.%20I%20always%20start%20with%20a%20basic%20outline%20for%20where%20I%20need%20it%20to%20end%20up,%20specifically%20how%20it%20feeds%20into%20the%20future%20installment%20in%20the%20series.%20After%20that%20though,%20I%E2%80%99m%20basically%20along%20for%20the%20ride%20with%20the%20reader,%20discovering%20much%20of%20the%20emotional%20beats%20with%20the%20characters%20literally%20as%20I%20write%20them.%20In%20a%20strange%20way,%20I%20feel%20more%20like%20a%20journalist%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20writing%20Born%20of%20Fire,%20chronicling%20the%20exploits%20of%20these%20characters%20rather%20than%20just%20simply%20making%20them%20up.%20The%20results%20of%20which%20often%20see%20me%20walking%20away%20from%20a%20writing%20session%20surprised%20by%20revelations%20made%20and%20excited%20over%20the%20prospect%20of%20what%E2%80%99s%20to%20come.%20Do%20you%20have%20a%20favourite%20character%20to%20write?%20And%20maybe%20a%20least%20favourite?%20And%20why?%20%F0%9F%94%A5%20While%20Rex%20is%20by%20far%20the%20most%20personal%20character%20I%E2%80%99ve%20written,%20DiNiya,%20his%20love%20interest,%20and%20best%20friend,%20is%20easily%20my%20favorite%20to%20write.%20Like%20him,%20she%20has%20struggled%20with%20her%20own%20internal%20turmoil%20and%20deeply%20troubled%20past.%20However,%20unlike%20Rex,%20she%20has%20not%20only%20managed%20to%20keep%20from%20descending%20into%20despair%20but%20has%20emerged%20as%20a%20maternal%20figure%20to%20her%20brother%20in%20the%20wake%20of%20their%20mother%E2%80%99s%20death,%20shouldering%20the%20burdens%20of%20others%20so%20they%20might%20know%20some%20small%20semblance%20of%20peace.%20She%E2%80%99s%20the%20kind%20of%20person%20I%E2%80%99ve%20always%20aspired%20to%20be.%20In%20truth,%20Tomb%20of%20the%20Forsaken%20is%20really%20her%20story,%20the%20culmination%20of%20a%20journey%20that%20began%20with%20a%20tragedy%20that%20scarred%20her%20when%20she%20was%20a%20young%20girl.%20I%20feel%20both%20privileged%20and%20moved%20to%20have%20been%20able%20to%20share%20DiNiya%E2%80%99s%20story%20with%20the%20world.%C2%A0%20As%20for%20my%20least%20favorite%20to%20write,%20this%20might%20sound%20strange,%20but%20I%20think%20it%20might%20actually%20be%20Rex.%20While,%20yes,%20telling%20his%20story%20has%20been%20cathartic%20for%20me%20in%20many%20ways,%20it%20also%20means%20opening%20old%20wounds%20and%20examining%20parts%20of%20myself%20that%20remind%20me%20I%E2%80%99m%20far%20from%20perfect.%20Then%20again,%20that%E2%80%99s%20the%20essence%20of%20art%20regardless%20of%20the%20medium.%20You%E2%80%99ve%20written%20across%20a%20few%20genres%20now,%20namely%20horror%20and%20fantasy,%20how%20do%20you%20balance%20that?%20And%20are%20you%20interested%20in%20writing%20in%20any%20other%20genres?%20%F0%9F%94%A5%20Writing%20horror%20and%20fantasy%20has%20always%20felt%20natural%20to%20me.%20Both%20deal%20in%20the%20fantastic;%20the%20unbelievable.%20Where%20they%20differ%20though,%20is%20that%20fantasy%20is%20expansive%20and%20encourages%20the%20writer%20to%20indulge%20in%20every%20detail%20and%20curiosity.%20Horror,%20on%20the%20other%20hand,%20is%20all%20about%20minimalism%20at%20its%20core.%20Less%20is%20more,%20as%20the%20general%20rule%20of%20practice.%20To%20put%20it%20another%20way,%20fantasy%20is%20like%20a%20bodybuilder;%20big%20and%20awe-inspiring%20to%20look%20upon,%20while%20horror%20is%20like%20a%20sprinter:%20lean%20and%20mean.%20Combining%20the%20two,%20as%20I%20have%20in%20Tomb%20of%20the%20Forsaken,%20is%20really%20all%20about%20striking%20the%20perfect%20balance.%20Knowing%20how%20much%20to%20give%20the%20reader%20in%20terms%20of%20the%20answers%20they%20seek%20to%20satisfy%20their%20curiosity,%20while%20also%20knowing%20when%20to%20hold%20back%20to%20maintain%20the%20tension.%C2%A0%20Science%20fiction%20is%20another%20genre%20I%E2%80%99m%20very%20interested%20in%20writing%20for,%20though%20leaning%20more%20towards%20sci-fi/horror.%20I%20love%20tales%20of%20the%20latter%20set%20against%20a%20backdrop%20of%20the%20former.%20Some%20of%20the%20scariest%20films%20I%20grew%20up%20renting%20from%20the%20video%20store%20as%20a%20kid,%20and%20now%20proudly%20own,%20were%20based%20on%20science%20gone%20wrong,%20or%20people%20finding%20themselves%20in%20the%20depths%20of%20outer%20space%20where,%20as%20the%20tagline%20goes,%20%E2%80%98No%20one%20can%20hear%20you%20scream,%E2%80%99%20haha.%20I%E2%80%99ve%20had%20an%20idea%20for%20one%20such%20story%20in%20mind%20for%20a%20little%20while%20now%20and%20hope%20to%20start%20writing%20it%20in...nhttps://rubyraereads.co.za/2024/05/13/author-interview-with-dreagen/
