Neolithic and Bronze AgeThe megalithic monument of Lousal is a false dome
monument also known as a tholos, built around 2000 BC, with an apparent
systematic use until about 1700 BC. This monument is a 2 in 1 since it has

Setúbal district of Portugal.

SOLBERGFELTET

Submitted by DrewParsons on Tuesday, 14 November 2023   (9833 reads)

Rock ArtJust across the E6 from Solberg in Norway is Hornnes - another rock art
site on "The Prehistoric Road". 21 ships on an almost vertical rock face all
pointing east to the sea (and the rising sun). The detail is so clear that it is
possible to date them to the late Bronze Age from their design. The site signs
here link such ships with the passage through life and on into the next world.

DUNAN NAN NIGHEAN

Submitted by SolarMegalith on Monday, 13 November 2023   (73 reads)

Iron Age and Later PrehistoryDun in Isle of Colonsay. This well-preserved dun is
located in the NE part of the Isle of Colonsay, not far from the coast, in a
position dominating over a boggy valley. The D-shaped structure survived in good
condition, including an entrance passage with lintels still in place. A later
hut was inserted inside the dun, but original inner wall-face is still visible
in several places. The site was excavated in 1949, sherds of Iron Age pottery
were found.

BLACKWATER DRAW

Submitted by AKFisher on Thursday, 09 November 2023   (466 reads)

Mesolithic, Palaeolithic and EarlierBlackwater Draw is an intermittent stream
channel about 140 km (87 mi) long, with headwaters in Roosevelt County, New
Mexico, about 18 km (11 mi) southwest of Clovis, and flows southeastward toward
the city of Lubbock, Texas. Blackwater Locality No. 1 is an important
archaeological site that was first recognized in 1929 by Ridgley Whiteman - the
type-site of the Clovis culture. The first large-scale excavation occurred in
1932, though local residents had been collecting bone and lithic materials for
decades.

VILLE HAMON DOLMEN

Submitted by TheCaptain on Saturday, 04 November 2023   (5511 reads)

Neolithic and Bronze AgeThis poor thing to the east of the town of Erquy is a
bit of a mess. One large section of capstone still sits on two bits of upright,
but the rest is all on the ground. You can see the slab on the ground fits
exactly with the capstone above. What remains is basically a large jumble of
stones on top of a mound. It was probably a very large dolmen with entry
passage, but the stones have mostly broken into a heap.

Neolithic and Bronze AgeIn a private garden in the middle of the town of Hamar
(Hedmark, Norway) is a very pretty round barrow. The barrow is inside a fenced
in garden looking like a small park with short lawn grass and some larger trees.
The barrow has a few trees on it but it is easy to see from outside the fence.

COMOX HARBOR ANCIENT FISH TRAP

Submitted by TheDruid-3X3 on Wednesday, 01 November 2023   (1234 reads)

Multi-periodA native fish trap system that was outlawed after the coming of the
British Government and settlers. Newly appointed Fisheries Officers in the mid
18th Century dismantled and destroyed the fish trap system. Then for almost a
century, knowledge of this brilliant, ancient technology disappeared. But then
the big earthquake of 1946 loosened the sand in the harbour and swept some out
to sea. Thousands of stakes started popping up.

LUNDERAMSA

Submitted by kenntha88 on Wednesday, 25 October 2023   (735 reads)

Neolithic and Bronze AgeThe Lunderamsa site will be the number 10000th photo I
(Kenneth) upload to Megalithic Portal! A beautiful example of a large bronze age
burial cairn. Not a round cairn but a long cairn which are rare. The cairn is
located on top of a large rocky hill with some pine forest and rock outcrops. A
footpath leads from a local road up on the hill and there are also some
information posters. From the top there is a beautiful view over the ocean and
the cairn would have been easily visible from the sea.

HEIDENTEMPEL TECKLENBURG

Submitted by Harald_Platta on Wednesday, 25 October 2023   (1411 reads)

Modern SitesThe Heidentempel ("pagan temple") is a rock in Tecklenburg (North
Rhine-Westphalia/Germany). It has been speculated that this site was used as a
pagan sanctuary. Several runes of unknown age can be seen in the rock. Two
niches have been cut into the rock wall. According to local legends, the
sacrificial knife lay in the smaller niche, while the bowl with which the
priests collected the blood from the sacrificed animal lay in the bigger one.
However there are several written records that in the 19th century a stonemason
was commissioned to work the rock in order to boost tourism with the legend.
This idea was born at the "Stammtisch"
