HP PRINTERS - FIREWALL BLOCKS DRIVER INSTALL OR PRINTER FUNCTIONS (WINDOWS)

Firewall software helps block threats from outside your network, but some
firewall settings or configurations can block communication with network
printers.

Firewall settings might cause the following issues:

 * Printer software and drivers cannot be installed

 * During the driver installation the printer is not found on the network

 * Some printer functions work while others do not

 * The printer suddenly stops printing

 * A Not connected status displays even though the printer is connected to the
   network


TEMPORARILY DISABLE FIREWALL SOFTWARE (WINDOWS)

Use the Print and Scan Doctor to temporarily disable firewall software to
determine if it is the cause of driver installation or printer functionality
issues.

 1. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor, and then follow the prompts to install
    and open the tool.

 2. On the welcome screen, click Network, and then select Troubleshooting
    Firewalls.
    
    

 3. Click the name of any Enabled firewall, and then click Disable. Do this for
    any other enabled firewalls in the list.
    
    

 4. Install the print driver and software or use the printer feature that you
    are troubleshooting.
    
    * If the issue is resolved, the firewall is causing the issue. Consult the
      firewall support website to change settings such as security level,
      trusted zones, and allowing communication with HP software and websites.
    
    * If the issue is not resolved, the firewall is not causing the issue.
      Continue troubleshooting or search for your issue on HP Customer Support.

 5. Return to HP Print and Scan Doctor, re-enable any firewalls that you
    disabled, and then click Done with Firewalls.


CONFIGURE THE FIREWALL

Review the firewall settings for your computer security programs, such as
Windows Defender, McAfee, and Norton.


CONFIGURE FIREWALL SETTINGS IN WINDOWS DEFENDER

Windows Defender Firewall comes with all Windows PCs. If you use Windows
Defender, configure settings to work with your HP printer and software.

 1.  Search Windows for and open Windows Defender Firewall.

 2.  Click Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall, and then
     confirm all HP programs in the list are allowed for your network type
     (private or public).
     
     To allow a program, click Change settings, and then check the box in the
     column that applies to your network.
     
     

 3.  On the Windows Defender home screen, click Advanced settings.

 4.  In the left pane, click Outbound Rules, scroll to the right in the center
     pane to find the Remote Port column, and then click Remote Port to sort the
     list numerically.
     
     Note:
     
     Printers use ports to communicate with a computer. Rules create openings in
     the firewall for specific ports.
     
     

 5.  Locate the following port numbers in the list, and then do the following:
     
     * Make sure the Protocol column matches (TCP or UDP).
     
     * Click the port number. If Enable Rule displays in the Action pane, click
       it to enable the rule.
     
     * Note any missing port numbers.
     
      * TCP 80
     
      * TCP 139
     
      * UDP 139
     
      * UDP 161
     
      * UDP 427
     
      * TCP 443
     
      * TCP 631
     
      * UDP 3702
     
      * UDP 5353
     
      * TCP 8080
     
      * TCP 9100
     
      * TCP 9220
     
      * TCP 9290
     
      * TCP 9500

 6.  Click Inbound Rules, scroll to the right to find the Local Port column, and
     then click Local Port to sort the list numerically.

 7.  Locate the following port numbers in the list, and then repeat the previous
     step to make sure the protocol matches, enable any rules, and note any
     missing port numbers.
     
      * TCP 80
     
      * UDP 427
     
      * TCP 443
     
      * TCP 631
     
      * UDP 3702
     
      * UDP 5353
     
      * TCP 8080
     
      * TCP 9100
     
      * If you found and enabled all ports, return to the driver installation or
        try to use the printer. If the issue is not resolved, go to HP Customer
        Support to continue troubleshooting.
     
      * If you did not find all the ports, continue to the next step to create
        new rules for the missing ports.

 8.  In the left pane, select Inbound Rules or Outbound Rules, depending on
     which port numbers are missing, and then click New Rule in the Action pane.

 9.  In the Rule Type step, select Port, and then click Next.
     
     

 10. In the Protocol and Ports step, select UDP or TCP, type the port number
     into the Specific local ports field, and then click Next.

 11. In the Action step, select one of the following options, and then click
     Next.
     
     * If you only use a trusted, secure network, select Allow the connection.
     
     * If you use multiple networks or an unsecure network, select Allow the
       connection if it is secure, and then complete an additional step to
       authorize or block specific computers.

 12. Follow the remaining steps to create the rule.
     
     Repeat these steps for any other missing port numbers.

If all ports are enabled, return to the driver installation or try to use the
printer. If the issue is not resolved, go to HP Customer Support to continue
troubleshooting.


CONFIGURE FIREWALL SETTINGS IN OTHER SECURITY SOFTWARE FOR WINDOWS

Change settings in third-party firewall applications to allow HP software to
install or let network printer functions to work properly.

Common security software support websites:

 * Avast (in English)

 * AVG (in English)

 * Avira (in English)

 * Bitdefender (in English)

 * eScan (in English)

 * Kaspersky (in English)

 * McAfee (in English)

 * Norton (in English)

Check all of the following firewall settings, and change them if necessary.

 * Update the security software to the current version.

 * Make sure firewall settings have not been changed from default.

 * Set the Firewall strength to medium or an equivalent level when connected to
   your home network.

 * Set your network as a trusted zone.

 * Make sure HP programs are trusted programs and are not blocked.

 * Enable alert messages. For example, if you install new HP software, your
   security software should confirm if you want to allow, permit, or unblock the
   installation. Always allow the HP software to install.
   
   If the firewall has a Remember this action or Create a rule for this option,
   select it.

 * Make sure HP ports are not blocked. Create rules to allow the following
   ports, if necessary.
   
   * Inbound rules: TCP 80, TCP 443, TCP 631, TCP 8080, UDP 427, UDP 3702, UDP
     5353
   
   * Outbound rules: TCP 80, TCP 139, TCP 443, TCP 631, TCP 8080, TCP 9100, TCP
     9200, TCP 9290, TCP 9500, UDP 139, UDP 161, UDP 427, UDP 3702, UDP 5353
