04.05.2021 VERSIONS OF PIZ DAINT ARCHITECTURE MODULEFILES

The default version of the architecture modulefiles daint-gpu and daint-mc is
20.11, which corresponds to the current default Cray Programming Environment
(PE) on Piz Daint: the modules will make available in your MODULEPATH the
supported applications and libraries built with the default Cray PE. If you load
daint-gpu/20.08 or daint-mc/20.08 instead, the software built with the previous
Cray PE 20.08 will be available: please note that some applications and
libraries built with the previous Cray PE might no longer work with the current
configuration of the system.

01.04.2021 UPDATED INSTRUCTIONS FOR TECHNICAL REPORT

We have updated the instructions to prepare the technical report required to
submit a Production Proposal. The CrayPAT performance analysis is no longer
required, while the batch job summary report is requested instead: please have a
look at the dedicated section of the User Portal for more details.

08.03.2021 PIZ DAINT UPGRADE TUESDAY MARCH 16TH

Piz Daint won't be available Tuesday March 16th from 7:00 to 20:00 due to a
minor OS upgrade and the installation of a new software stack:

 * Login to the JupyterHub service on Piz Daint goes through CSCS's Identity
   Provider service (OIDC)
 * Programming environment:
   * Version 20.11 of the Cray Programming Toolkit (CDT) will be installed and
     available as default
   * The previous cdt/20.08 remains available as non-default: should you need to
run codes compiled with cdt/20.08, please add 'module load cdt/20.08' in
     your slurm scripts
   * We recommend to always load the corresponding cdt module in your build and
slurm scripts, to avoid issues when defaults change: in order to set the
correct environment for CUDA-enabled codes, please load the new cdt-cuda
     module
   * If you want to compile a gpu code using the PGI compiler, make sure to swap
to the cudatoolkit module providing CUDA 10, since the 20.x versions of the
PGI compiler are not supported with the default cudatoolkit (CUDA 11)
 * Supported software stack
   * The supported scientific software stack is upgraded using the new cdt/20.11
   * If you rely on the supported software, you should update your slurm scripts
with the latest module names: you can obtain the list after the upgrade
typing module load daint-gpu (or daint-mc) and then module av
   * A new version of ParaView (v5.9) is installed. We encourage users to switch
to the new release since it includes numerous enhancements and bug fixes.
See the Release Notes and the full list of new features
   * A new version of VMD (v1.9.4a51) is installed. See the Development Notes
for the full list of new features
   * TensorFlow is updated to version 2.4.0
   * PyTorch with Horovod support has been updated to version 1.7.1
   * A new version of Julia and JuliaExtensions (v1.5.3) is installed and set as
default. We encourage users to use it as the new modules improve the
handling of the stacked environment and include newer versions of MPI.jl
and CUDA.jl among other preinstalled packages
   * We will provide the latest release of most supported applications only,
updating the module defaults: CP2K is an exception, since the latest
release (8.1) has shown a performance issue affecting the GPU executable
and therefore the default will still be release 7.1

24.02.2021 NEW TICKETING INTERFACE AS OF 01.03.2021

From March 1st 2021, CSCS users will need to access the support web portal with
their credentials in order to open new support tickets (cases) and to contact us
on open tickets. In case of issues with the credentials, the interface also
allows to contact us without authentication.

Open tickets will be migrated automatically to the new platform without any
action required from the users. Additionally, users may have access to past
cases as well, subject to certain conditions: for example, if the e-mail address
used to submit the ticket was associated with the CSCS account.

EBRAINS users will receive additional information about how to request support.

28.01.2021 REPORT ABOUT PIZ DAINT INCIDENT ON 12.01.2021

On Tuesday Jan 12th 2021 at 15:01 an internal Aries HSN link failed and caused
the shutdown of the Aries network. This led to crashes in several compute nodes
and half of the system service nodes, including vital system services. We
managed to bring up the system back in service after rebooting more than 2000
nodes and we were able to open it to users at 20:16.

The investigation that followed this disruption allowed to identify the
defective HSN card device, which is now replaced.
