specifically targeted to the economic development community to provide decision
makers with data driven tools to promote a deeper understanding of the threats,
opportunities, and potential impacts to economic recovery following a short and
long recovery emergency such as COVID-19.

ANALYZE SOCIOECONOMIC AND DEMOGRAPHIC DATA FOR MARYLAND WITH A FOCUS ON THE
EASTERN SHORE TO LEARN ABOUT POTENTIAL THREATS AND OPPORTUNITIES AND UNDERSTAND
THE IMPACTS OF COVID-19 ON OUR REGION.




KEY POINTS:


 * With 6% of its population without health insurance coverage, Maryland now
   ranks 16th (previously 15th) in the nation in the percent of its' population
   having no health insurance coverage.
 * At 5.3%, the Eastern Shore has a lower percent of it's population without
   health insurance coverage however several counties are slightly higher than
   this statewide percent.
 * The 35 to 64 year old age group makes up the largest share of individuals
   without coverage which is an ongoing trend not only in Maryland (47%) but on
   the Eastern Shore (45%) as well.
 * Among Maryland's Senior population, only 2% (~8.8k individuals) are without
   health insurance coverage and on the Shore is even less at 1% (277
   individuals).

KEY POINTS:


 * Comparing the current 2017-2021 ACS survey data on poverty status with the
   previous years data, we see that poverty has decreased slightly across the
   State however the Eastern Shore continues to have a higher percent of it's
   population in poverty compared to the State. 
 * There are 50,354 individuals on Maryland’s Eastern Shore living at or below
   poverty which accounts for 11.4% of the population.  This is higher than the
   9.9% found in Maryland.
 * The percent of children living in poverty on the Eastern Shore also decreased
   from 16.9% to 15.8% however is still much higher than the 11.9% Statewide.

KEY POINTS:


 * Average annual payroll per employee increased very little from 2019 to 2020.
   On the Eastern Shore, average annual payroll per employee increased by only
   0.3% while the State only increased by 1.1%. 
 * At at total of $42,479, the average annual payroll per employee on the
   Eastern Shore is still below the State average of $57,748.
 * Health Insurance, Manufacturing, and Retail Trade continue to have the most
   employees and the highest payroll by sector on the Shore. 
 * The State added 16,798 employees and 234 employer establishments from 2019 to
   2020.  The Eastern Shore however lost 46 employees and 121 employer
   establishments in this same time period.
