Sand fleas are one of the best baits you can use from the beach.
You’ve just got to find them first.
Here’s how to do it!

Blane Roberts from Panhandle Salt Beach Fishing put this video together to
provide further insight on sand fleas and their effectiveness as bait from the
surf.
Pompano, whiting, redfish, black drum, and more love to eat sand fleas off the
beach.
Spotting these little critters is key.
Once you get that down, the rest is easy.
It’s easy to spot them in the summertime but it’s a lot harder in the colder
months.
It almost looks like the sand is boiling.
As a wave retreats back into the ocean, the sand is pulled off of the sand fleas
back exposing them.
They will try to dig deeper at this point.
ANATOMY OF A SAND FLEA
At the top of the sand flea are little antennae that are actually its eyes.
Additionally, they have a flap beneath their legs that acts as the digger to dig
down in the sand.
This also protects the eggs inside the flea.
STEPS TO CATCH SAND FLEAS
Once you spot a pod of fleas near the water, you want to stay behind them and
stay quiet.
They can feel your vibration through the sand.
One scoop in the target area could be all the bait you need for an entire trip.
STORING SAND FLEAS
When its time to pack up and leave and you’ve got a full basket of fleas, you
can always store them for the next trip.
You never know what the beach will provide on your next trip out.
It can be tough to find sand fleas on your future trips.
To safely store sand fleas, you need two 5-gallon buckets.
Drill holes in the bottom of one of the buckets.
And you will also need an ice pack of any shape.
First, drop a couple of ice packs into the bucket without holes.
Take the bucket with holes and slide it right on top of the first bucket.
Then, drop the sand fleas in.
About once every four hours, you’ll want to rinse down the bucket with fleas
with water.
This will keep the sand fleas happy and live for the next morning of fishing.

Great post Blane. Glad you’re here as a Salt Stronger. Lots of info on sand
fleas I didn’t know. One thing that really surprised me is that they can feel
your vibrations and bury deeper. They, and so many creatures have intelligence
we have no clue about. We see it all the time in nature. Good stuff.

Hey Keith – I have my best luck fishing with fleas by pinning the flap/digger
against the body and hooking through the digger and out the top of the body.
This removes their ability to dig in the sand and will help keep any eggs locked
in there as well – tight lines!
