This blog facility will be used in 2017 as the Sustainability in the classroom
blog assessment

Hopefully this is quite easy to use for my students to create and publish their
own WordPress Blogs.

My name is Ian Digney. I am a teacher at Launceston College (LC) in Tasmania.

I have spent the last 25 years learning about all of the intricacies of
Computers and Networks.

I have successfully gained many qualifications along the way –

 * Bachelor of Computing (UTAS)
 * Bachelor of Teaching (UTAS)
 * Diploma of System Administration
 * Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
 * Certificate IV in IT General
 * Certificate IV in IT Networking

When I started at LC (mid 2016), I was devastated to see that they were hosting
all of their resources and training on the super expensive,  outdated and
totally useless Learning Management System (LMS) called Fronter. I didn’t want
to even sully my resources by putting them onto such a rubbish system, so I
purchased a domain name, a business hosting plan and downloaded and installed
the free open source Learning Management System (LMS) called Moodle. (currenly
version 3.1).

Moodle may not be the absolute best around, but it has a fantastic community
constantly creating and improving the system and its addins. It is also perfect
for VET type, competency based training, as you can set your own Qualification
Framework and Competencies used for your particular course, this is awesome
feature that Moodle does particularly well.

The home page of this WordPress site is simply a front-end that I can use to
discuss the real purpose of this domain, to provide a decent LMS for my
colleagues and I without paying a small fortune on an annual basis.

The Moodle site structure is still under construction and is mainly only useful
to students who are already enrolled in the couple of VET IT courses offered at
LC at the moment.

However, many other VET teachers have expressed an interest in putting their
courses up on the Moodle rather than dirty old Fronter so I expect expansion.

There is a hidden agenda behind this as well, hopefully it will become a useful
and sort after method for any businesses to offer their WHS Safety and any other
Training Courses they need their staff to undergo for a small course or student
based fee.

SITE GOALS AND AIMS:

This site will address all of the competencies, elements and performance
criteria required to gain specific certificates.

Currently, any new students will need to go through the enrollment process at
Launceston College, complete the course and gain the certificate.

However, I foresee a point in time in the near future where students will be
able to enrol themselves for a small monthly fee, take as long as need to get
through the course.
