Foundation Models, Generative AI, and Classic Bots: Where Is the Best Trade-Off?
Use Cases, Possibilities for Integration and the Example of "Customer Service”

Grace Hopper Stage

10:40—11:00

Classic bots, such as chatbots, voicebots and smart assistants, are in vogue.
For example, in call and service centers, companies automate answering
questions, solving problems, or selling simple products. Generative AI promises
to improve these solutions. But how does one deal with the sometimes-glaring
errors? Foundation models play a crucial role in this. How can all three
approaches be combined?

Data Literacy – Cultivating Essential Skills for Tomorrow

Grace Hopper Stage

14:20—14:40

In the presentation titled "Data Literacy – Cultivating Essential Skills for
Tomorrow," we delve into the crucial role of data literacy in our rapidly
digitizing world. The significance of having a fundamental understanding of data
as well as data products, their role, and their implications, particularly in
the context of digital transformations and AI, will be emphasized. We illustrate
the opportunities and challenges brought about by a data-driven society and shed
light on why understanding and utilizing data as well as data products have
become essential skills. This session will also provide insights into a data
literacy platform, which aims to enhance data literacy skills, both at
individual and organizational levels. It will enable the audience to effectively
navigate, comprehend, and utilize data in their daily lives and professional
settings. The ultimate goal is to empower individuals and institutions to
harness the power of data in meaningful ways, thereby fostering a more informed,
effective, and digitally advanced society.

Delivering Value with Data- Key Principles for Your Business Success

Grace Hopper Stage

15:20—15:40

Building a data-driven culture across the enterprise no longer has to add layers
of complexity that impact business agility. As the growth and distribution of
data continues, businesses must provide employees easy access to the data needed
to make the right decisions. In this session we will explore the distribution of
data and analytics, wherever the data is sourced, how modern data architectures
are helping drive optimised processes, supported by consistent security and
compliance across the Hybrid Data Cloud. We believe where data flows, ideas
follow.

Blueprinting AI-Services for Big Data Analytics

Alan Turing Stage

13:20—13:40

Our implementation blueprint guides teams at Allianz through the challenge of
bringing AI use cases to production. Our approach is based on an event-driven
architecture with small, decoupled services reacting upon event producers, such
as data streaming platforms or backend applications. We use Camunda's workflow
engine for orchestrating and coordinating services involved in an AI use
case. Thus, a dedicated business process, described in BPMN, is triggered and
executed by incoming events. A graphical BPMN user interface allows teams of
individuals with different skill-sets to work in close collaboration. Our
blueprint additionally provides all necessary templates for consuming relevant
data available via cross-company data platforms using Open-Source technologies,
such as Kubernetes, Apache Kafka and Kafka Connect. All consumed data objects
align to company-wide data models and are queryable for downstream processes.
For this, the blueprint provides standard components for data persistence, data
privacy, or SQL. Moreover, our blueprint follows MLPs principles to support
hosting machine learning (ML) models. It is agnostic to different MLOps
frameworks, such as model endpoints created with AWS SageMaker. With this,
business processes can seamlessly orchestrate REST endpoints. With our data
science workbench, we offer flexible environments that meet different software
and hardware requirements for training and building ML models. Deployed model
endpoints can be monitored with state-of-the-art tools, like Prometheus and
Grafana. Finally, extensive and GDPR-compliant logging helps tracking model
performance and indicates the right point in time for retraining.

Alan Turing Stage

13:40—14:00

Successful risk mitigation requires more than just evaluating financial data.
Since abrupt changes in the general environment can only be reflected in ratings
with a delay, German Landesbanken also rely on the analysis of press data. In
order to recognize credit risks at an early stage and avoid losses, early
warning systems like Risk Guard are needed. This application calculates risk
scores on a daily basis, forecasts significant changes in creditworthiness and
generates warning signals with a lead time of up to one year for companies,
banks, entire sectors, countries and regions. In this presentation we want to
talk about the resilience and reliability of the developed news based model.

AI-Enabled Document Processing in the Mittelstand

Alan Turing Stage

14:20—14:40

Companies involved in the construction and manufacturing business have to deal
with a lot of paperwork offers on a daily basis. For a manufacturing company,
processing these documents takes a lot of time and manual work and requires an
experienced workforce that knows the ins and outs of your product portfolio. We
set out to automate tedious processes like choosing the right products for a
given input text from a document by automatically processing the text and giving
AI-assisted suggestions. This makes the work for employees easier by reducing
the number of mistakes and making it possible for them to process more offers in
less time. As with most data projects in the beginning, there needed to be a
data source that could be used for training a machine learning model. That’s why
we first developed an easy-to-use tool that could be integrated into the
existing workflow and extract our necessary information. This tool can read
certain documents and have the users choose the right products from a product
database. This tool had the secondary purpose of recording training data for us
on the fly consisting of pairs of texts and products. We use this data to
improve the model's product suggestions over time. With the current setup, the
customer is able to reply to a request by creating an offer for the products and
services, which they can provide. Based on offers by multiple companies the
customer can decide which company to choose in the end. If you react to offers
in a timely manner your chances rise to get the offer and sell your products. In
this talk, we will share our experience of creating that AI-assisted product for
the case – starting with that there is absolutely no training data. We followed
a hybrid approach with a mixture of Natural Language Processing, domain-based
heuristics, and continuous improvement of the machine learning model with the
growing volume of training data.

Chances (and Risks) of Big Data in the Retail Sector

Alan Turing Stage

15:00—15:20

How can retailers leverage data and AI to boost merchandise sales effectively
while minimizing costs? While there are well-known and long-practiced
dependencies between seasons and sales in the retail sector, are there any less
obvious dependencies to consider? For instance, weather data can be utilized to
drive sales in the food retail industry. Are there other data products available
that can predict or assess the effectiveness of promotions through analytical
methods? What actionable insights can be recommended based on data and AI?
Through a new data platform, Edeka RR will enhance their ability to rapidly and
efficiently analyze data, providing their retailers and assortment planners with
high-quality data to support purchasing and ordering processes. This data
platform incorporates not only internal data but also external data. Edeka and
Kyndryl will explain their collaborative efforts with IBM in building this data
platform.

HR-Tech: How AI for Recruiting Will Have to Change - Disruptions & Best Practice

Alan Turing Stage

16:40—17:00

In the field of AI for recruiting, two game-changing trends are on the horizon:
First, people can more and more choose what jobs they want to work in. And so,
the database for recruiting decisions must take peoples' preferences into
account, as well as their skills. Such preferences include team fit, areas of
development or values and purpose. And second, recruiting is defined as a high
risk area in the proposal for the EU AI Act. Most recruiting software solutions
will have to comply with a new level of transparency and human oversight in the
next few years. Otherwise they will lose their licence to operate. Both trends
are addressed in CHEMISTREE’s “good AI for HR” solution: It is based on the
latest insights from research projects such as KIDD (AI serving diversity) as
well as the German Standardization Roadmap AI. herCAREER uses the CHEMISTREE
solution as a customer, with thousands of users (companies and job seekers) and
ten thousands of matches.

Bringing AI Ethics Principles into Development

Alan Turing Stage

17:00—17:20

From civil society to the EU Commission, a growing number of actors are calling
for ethical values to be incorporated into AI development. But what exactly do
principles such as "transparency", "security", "fairness" and "environmental
friendliness" mean and how can they be put into practice? In the "Roundtable
Series on Ethical AI Development" organized by Stiftung Mercator and the
Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V., representatives of software-developing
companies have been looking for answers. Starting from the identification of
central challenges and best practices, the participants develop prototypical and
cross-sectoral solutions for the practical implementation of AI ethics
principles. This talk introduces the project’s methodological process and the
main results.

How Technology Can Help Sustainable Businesses Find the Optimal Plan to Net Zero

Workshop Room

14:00—14:40

The road is long and complex:

What will a sustainable corporate strategy bring me, and, above all, what will
it cost me?

How do I break down my goals?

IBM helps with proven technology in strategic or operational planning to
quantify in real time the outcome of, for example, financial costs and CO2e
emissions. A planner can simulate in "what-if" scenarios and ultimately decide
which of the scenarios fits best. An optimization engine helps find the optimal
path for sustainability versus cost savings.

Learning How Network Structure Shapes Decision-Making for Bio-Inspired Computing

 * Dr Michael Schirner (Charité - Berlin University Hospital)

Learning How Network Structure Shapes Decision-Making for Bio-Inspired Computing

Grace Hopper Stage

15:00—15:20

To better understand how network structure shapes intelligent behavior, we
developed a learning algorithm to create personalized brain network models for
650 participants in the Human Connectome Project. We found that participants
with higher intelligence scores took more time to solve difficult problems and
that slower solvers had higher average functional connectivity. Using
simulations, we identified a mechanistic relationship between functional
connectivity, intelligence, processing speed, and brain synchrony for trading
accuracy with speed as a function of arousal-inhibition balance. Reduced
synchrony caused decision circuits to quickly jump to conclusions, while higher
synchrony allowed for better integration of evidence and more robust working
memory. Rigorous testing was performed to ensure the reproducibility and
generality of the results obtained. Here, we identify correlations between brain
structure and function that allow learning of connectome topology from
noninvasive derivations and map it to interindividual differences in behavior,
suggesting broad utility for research and clinical applications.

Lanxess Way to Data Driven Decisions Using Microsoft Technology

Alan Turing Stage

10:20—10:40

The chemical industry faces major challenges throughout its value chain. In
order to be able to make good decisions, the analysis of all available data has
become a basic requirement. LANXESS has developed a system based on Microsoft
and Open Source technology that makes it possible to flexibly analyze data of
different systems, formats and sizes and ultimately make it available to
decision-makers in graphic form. In addition to a sophisticated security system,
the development focus was on modular analyzes and tools in the area of data
governance. We present the key concepts of the system and the background of the
development.

Baywa's Data Enablement Journey to Become a Data-Driven Organization

Alan Turing Stage

11:00—11:20

Utilizing data assets becomes crucial to enterprises future business growth and
efficiency gains, which leads to the necessity of a mature data management.
Regulatory requirements such as the Supply Chain Act enforce the urgent demand
to foster high quality data products across the entire value chain within the
global organization. BayWa r.e. identified potentials to optimize their
processes and hence realize cost efficiency effects. Therefore, a green field
approach has been initiated to start the Data Enablement Platform journey.
Enabled by a central data platform based on Informatica Intelligent Data
Management Cloud (IDMC) integrated with MS Azure as cloud hyperscaler, a use
case driven approach has been chosen to scale the platform continuously. Beside
all technological capabilities to foster mature data management, the
transformation is accompanied by a cultural change, which is equally important
to attract and retain an empowered business team to gain a competitive advantage
based on data & analytics. Demonstrating value-creating effects at an early
stage, the first lighthouse project focuses on supplier master data and is
accompanied by further use cases to quickly define governance related processes
in parallel. Bringing both together, agile delivery of high valuable use cases
to the organization and building the right foundation to scale, a two-fold
approach is pursued, and a diverse team brought to live: The Center of
Excellence (CoE) consisting of various talents and service capabilities, lay the
foundation to induce the cultural and technological change throughout the
organization.

Towards AI-Native Mobile Networks - from 5G-Advanced to 6G and beyond

Alan Turing Stage

14:40—15:00

The rise of AI/ML in mobile communications will have profound impact on the
telco industry. In future generations of mobile networks, AI/ML will enhance or
replace components of devices (e.g., smart phone) both in hardware and software.
Depending on the solution, this requires standardized AI/ML enablers to ensure
that fundamental building blocks like data collection, ML model (re-)training
and deployment are working in an inter-operable manner between different
components, including between the radio network and devices (handsets). This
talk outlines this transitional journey towards AI-native mobile networks,
starting with 5G-Advanced towards 6G and beyond.

Successful Implementation and Scaling of AI Projects at Deutsche Bahn: A Case
Study on Reinforcement Learning-based Train Dispatching Application and
Scalability

Alan Turing Stage

15:00—15:20

This abstract discusses the successful implementation of AI projects at Deutsche
Bahn that have moved beyond proof-of-concept and are delivering real value. The
AI products, developed by the AI Factory, address key business objectives in
line with top management requirements. The development of these products follows
four maturity phases to convert findings from feasibility to a stable and
standardized AI product. The presentation focuses on the specific use case of a
reinforcement learning-based AI application to support train dispatchers. It
covers the initial steps taken during proof-of-concept, as well as the scaling
of the application to multiple control centers and expansion to mixed traffic.
This example illustrates the approach to scaling AI projects, demonstrating the
successful implementation of AI products at Deutsche Bahn and can be used as a
blueprint for successful AI projects.

Optimizing the Customer Journey with (Causal) AI

Alan Turing Stage

15:20—15:40

While machine learning and AI is mostly applied for prediction problems, which
are correlation based, many interesting problems in business are so-called
causal problems. Examples are dynamic pricing, resource allocation, targeted
marketing and many more. The emerging field of causal machine learning combines
causal inference methods with modern machine learning / AI. A/B-Testing is
widely used to study the effect of intervention in marketing. Now, the use of ML
allows to derive personalized marketing strategies. In this project in
collaboration with a car manufacturer we show how causal AI can be used to
optimize the user experience of web pages and to develop personalized offers.
Additionally, we highlight the potential of A/B tests powered by machine
learning and AI to improve business processes.
