ABOUT AYLESBURY

Aylesbury is an old market town, and the county town of Buckinghamshire, in
South East England. Located centrally in the county it lies in the Aylesbury
Vale between the Chiltern Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and the
north of Buckinghamshire. In 2017 Aylesbury was designated a Garden Town. A
vibrant community of approximately 150,000 people in the Aylesbury Vale district
as a whole, and over 50,000 in the town.

Aylesbury has very early origins as a settlement from the Bronze Age, and it’s
believed the Anglo Saxons named the town Aigler burgh. Evolving into a market
town it became a central point for surrounding villages. Aylesbury has a rich
history. A fort once stood at Castle Street in the town centre, and today we can
still enjoy historic architecture in the old part of town around St. Mary’s
church. A growing trade and administrative centre, Aylesbury’s canal and then
the railway came in the 1800s. Visit Aylesbury on the Buckinghamshire Heritage
Portal to learn more about the town’s history.
