SHEIN HAS A NEW SCAM – KNOW IT AND BEWARE OF THIS THREAT

In accordance with Kaspersky, there is a new scam in Shein that has reached
Latin America. Hackers now promise money in exchange for positive product
reviews. To make it more credible, they buy ads on Google and partner with
unsuspecting influencers to attract more victims.



The scam operates through apps on the Google Play store and on sites like “Money
Looks,” promising to pay up to $60 per positive review for products from some
online stores. However, to participate, victims must pay a “deposit” that will
supposedly be refunded along with the payment for the reviews, but in reality,
they never receive the money back.



The fraudulent website also offers the promise of getting free clothes on Shein
and provides support on WhatsApp to gain the trust of the interested parties.
The “attractive income” and the opportunity to achieve financial freedom are the
tactics used to hook users and steal their money.

DOES SHEIN MONEY LOOKS WORK?

No. Money Looks does not work and is part of this new Shein scam. The rogue app
has been removed several times from the app store, but it reappears from time to
time. Although for now the scam has focused on Brazil, experts have seen that
this type of fraud using names of famous websites can quickly spread to other
countries in the region.

Fabio Assolini, director of the Global Research and Analysis Team for Latin
America at Kaspersky mentions the following: “The purchase is processed by a
trusted company for online payments, but most victims do not report the fraud
and do not request a refund., allowing scammers to keep your money.” Therefore,
it recommends reporting cases to the authorities.

He ends by giving a couple of pieces of advice to the general public: «It is
important to note that the simple act of clicking on the link does not create
risks since it only leads to the purchase or download page of the app. The fraud
itself occurs when the alleged purchase is made, sending the money to the
criminal without receiving anything in return.

The Money Looks app does not work and has been taken down multiple times from
the Google Play Store.

If you have been a victim of this new scam from Shein or other digital stores,
advise the following:

 * If the payment was made by credit card, contact the bank as soon as possible
   and ask to block the payment.
 * In case it was through a digital platform, contact customer service and
   request a return as soon as possible.
   
   
   
 * If you paid through another site without protection certifications, it is
   advisable to open a legal complaint to register the fraud.


HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF FROM THIS NEW SHEIN SCAM?

To avoid falling for this new Shein scam or other similar ones, we give you the
following recommendations:

 * Pay attention to websites: Before entering data or making payments, look at
   the URL and how the website is structured. If you find misspellings or if
   there is only one page with no other sections, it is probably a scam.
   
   
   
 * Do your research: Before entering personal or bank details, look for reviews
   and ratings on official websites or stores. If it is a scam, there are likely
   to be complaints from other victims.
 * Use security software that logs suspicious activity and protects your
   sensitive information.
