Watch this video where an #ebike explodes while it is carried out of our
Client's facility. Fortunately, no one was hurt in this video and our Fire Rover
agent had their finger on the trigger of our nozzle to spray our environmentally
friendly encapsulator if needed. My latest article, "January Fire 🔥 Report: Do
We Finally Have a Handle on the Lithium-ion Battery Problem?" You can read the

Does the video show that the battery was already "hot"? Also, was the worker
hurt?

A friend of mine lost his detached shop because of a lithium power bank that
exploded when he was charging it to go camping. Luckily he was able to get hoses
going to save the house. It still melted windows, shingles, burned fascia and
destroyed the Hardi siding on the entire side of his house... Scary what these
little batteries are capable of...

🔥 What #OSHA Changes to Fire Brigade Standard (29 CFR 1910.156) Means to the
Waste and Recycling Industry 🔥 ***This standard will apply to every segment
of the waste and recycling industry including waste, #paper, #plastic,
   #metal, #rubber, #hazardousmaterials, #electronics, #compost and C&D
operations*** Several of you have asked for my feedback on #OSHAs new
standard regarding "Fire Brigade", which is being replaced with
"#EmergencyResponse." I reached out to my friend and #fireengineer, James
Andy Lynch. We did our best to read through the proposed changes...all 600
pages worth...and discuss how we feel that this will affect the #waste and
#recycling industry specifically. Still, the reality is that this standard,
if enacted, will affect every industrial application where employees are in
the position to respond to fire hazards or any other onsite emergency,
including accident response and injuries. Thank you to Angelina from Waste
Advantage Magazine, who published our thoughts and commentary so late on a
Friday afternoon when most of the US is covered in cold 🥶 weather ❄️ 💨 🌧️

The final numbers are in, and the good news is that we finally stopped the
three-year trend, coming in just below the high-water mark of 390 publicly
reported fires that we incurred in 2022. Now the work begins… Since 2016 I
have been doing my best to try to understand the effects of lithium-ion
batteries on our #waste and #recycling streams in the US and Canada and
across the globe. As I wrote the first article, a couple of things are clear
to me: 1) Lithium-ion batteries are responsible for about half of the fire
incidents we see in our waste and recycling streams. (Consider that the
lithium-ion #batteries DO NOT cause the "summertime spike" we see each year).
   2) The US and Canada are getting a handle on the problem by installing #fire
#safety in their operations, educating both the public and business partners
and the investment and installation of our Fire Rover solution. We have a ton
of work to do, especially when you break down the individual occupancies of
the waste and recycling industry. #ScrapMetal fires are up,
#ElectronicsRecycling fire incidents are up, and #PlasticRecycling #fires are
up, which makes sense based on the increase of these incidents at these types
of operations across the globe. In an article by Waste Management Review
highlighting the #Australian EPA response to these operators, an article
released this month highlighted the issue and actions they are taking against
the industry. “We’ve seen that the #fires at waste and recycling
facilities... represent an unacceptable risk to Victorians, the environment
and industry, and could result in clean-up costs in the millions of dollars,”
EPA Acting Executive Director Operations Rachel G. said. “Our summer Fire
Prevention Program will target high risk sites with inspections by our
officers from the ground and in the air... “We’re sending a message to waste
and recycling operators; there’s no excuse for failing to properly manage
their fire risk and if they haven’t or won’t, EPA will use its powers to
enforce compliance with the regulations.” "Between November 2022 and October
2023, 380 fire prevention inspections of waste and recovery facilities were
conducted by EPA, resulting in five facilities being fined, 117 remedial
notices issued and four official warnings as well as providing advice on 400
occasions. Those who know me understand that my opinion is that
#batterymanufacturers, consumers, and businesses who improperly discard their
electronics and other fire hazards must be held accountable for their share
of the blame; the reality is that most governments don't hold this opinion,
and will continue to hold the operators responsible for finding solutions to
deal with this epidemic of fires. If you would like to reserve a PDF copy of
my 7th Annual Waste & Recycling Facility Fire Report, please submit your
   interest at: https://lnkd.in/dCPtv-Q

There is some great commentary by Shelley Padnos in her article in this
month's ISRI newsletter. The reality is that there are definitely parts of
"recycling" that are not working the way we would hope, but the reality is
that we need to recycle commodities to enhance the "virgin" materials we are
using to manufacture new products or we risk supply chain issues. The reality
is that "recycling" is doing very well and has been for years. In my December
article, I attempted to make this point I have shared for years. What is
"real #recycling?" The reality is that we are really good at recycling
   #metals, #cardboard, #construction materials, #paper, #leadacidbatteries, and
more. As Shelley mentions, #plastics are the major issue as they are complex
and have disparate recipes that are hard to separate We cannot let that major
hurdle stifle the progress we have made in the public's eye.
https://lnkd.in/g_R78yM4 The baby cannot be thrown out with the bathwater. I
hope we all can agree that we need to #reuse and/or #recycle as much
#commoditymaterial as possible if we want to be good stewards of the
environment as well have enough material make what our economy needs to
   thrive. https://lnkd.in/g_Xtrs5T

I don’t know about anyone else, but with so much seemingly “bad news” out
there, I have to make a conscious choice to seek out the good things that are
going on in the world. The reality is that we “click” on bad news, the news
outlets know it, so we get more “bad news.” We have made it a point at
COhatch to focus on the good news and share some of the positives programs
that our members and employees participate in for their communities in our
latest edition of the “The Good Newspaper.” You can read the digital version
on our webpage, but sometimes it nice to read about the positive things
taking place in our communities through a good ol’ newspaper. To the younger
ones out there where this might be your first time picking one up, I can
assure you, there is nothing like the smell of a fresh newspaper to get your
day started :) I even shared my copy below that includes the “coffee stain”
from my morning brew. I might have even had to wash my hands after reading
because the ink rubbed off. Love it! #workmeetlive
