DID ADAM HAVE A WIFE BEFORE EVE?

Whenever we are faced with answering a difficult bible question, the first thing
we must establish is God as the Sovereign Creator and His word as the only true
source of biblical information. We want our source to always be His Word, and
our truth to come from His holy Scriptures because our views and opinions could
lead to inaccurate beliefs, and contrary doctrines.
So, what does the scripture say about the first woman God created, was her named
Lilith, or was Eve truly Gods first female creation?
I looked up the information on Lilith to see where it got its origin, and found
that this is a folktale that started elsewhere but eventually became a part of
the Israelite tradition. A folktale is a story originating in popular culture,
and typically passed on by word of mouth; there is no truth to it. We cannot
confirm truth concerning God by way of a folktale, because it is not based on
facts. And we must never insert it into scriptures to expand a story, because it
makes for a better read, or because we believe it will fill in a blank.
Those who believe in this folktale believed that Lilith was Adams first wife.
That the marriage did not work out and she left, causing God to make wife number
2 (Eve). Research also says that she is now known as a thief of newborn infants
and the most notorious demon.
The Jewish Torah consists of the first 5 books of Moses. Genesis, Exodus,
Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. Some of those who carry on the tradition of the
story of Lilith based their folktale on the belief that there is a missing link
between Genesis 1:26-28 & Gen 2:7, that two different women were created.
Genesis 1 gives a summary of all God’s created things. From day one to day six
God listed the things He created in order to populate the sky, the sea, and
land. His last creation on day six was His grand finale; He made them male
first, then female, then He rested from all His work on day seven.
In Genesis 2, God begins to explain his intricate process, giving us a glimpse
behind the scene of His methods. Verse 4 beings with “This is the history of the
heavens and the earth in the day that God created them” Here we find out how God
populated heaven, land, and sea, and why the woman was created. This was the
same principle God used with the Law. He produced the 10 commandments first,
then the rest of the Law He gave after with more details to better understand
the first 10. Generally, it is like having one conversation about the items you
let’s say prepared for a meal, then having an additional conversation explaining
in greater detail, the steps you took in preparing each item. If you could look
closely, you will see that God has a pattern that is consistent throughout. Once
you understand His way, the creation of man will no longer be confusing nor
contradicting. All we need to do now is tell His story the way He wrote it,
while rejecting, rebuking, and correcting anyone who adds any additional
details. (see 2 Tim 3:16)
The Process
The what. Genesis 1.27 says, So God created man in his own image, in the image
of God created he him; male and female He created them.
The how. Gen 2:7 says, And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and
breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
The need. Gen 2:18 says, And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man
should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
The solution. Gen 2:20-23 tells us, Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the
fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not
found an help meet for him. 21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon
Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead
thereof; 22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman,
and brought her unto the man. 23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones,
and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of
Man.
The naming. In Gen 3:20, Adam called her name Eve, because she was the mother of
all the living.
When we explore further, we will see that God used the same method in recording
the creation of the beast/land animals, sea creatures, fowl of the air, and
trees of the field. He spoke about them first, then gave more details about the
process He used while creating them.
There is no indication by scripture that there was any woman that preceded Eve.
Her name represented who she was, the one who preceded all living human except
for the man Adam. if Eve was first, then the story of Lilith is to be rejected
as false information, because it is not based on biblical truth. Lilith is, and
will always remain, a cultural folktale.
Remember, scriptures have warned us to be careful of false doctrine, false
prophets, false teachers, and strange doctrines. Sound teaching is no longer
being embraced, as servants of unrighteousness, and sheep in wolf clothing have
gone out into the world to lead people astray. We are to test every spirit and
check doctrine that we hear against the word of God just to make sure it’s
sound. The more truth you know, the easier it will become for you to recognize
untruth.
