Safety education for the crews and organizations of traditional rig vessels
undergoing maintenance and drydocking.

Managing the safety gap between USCG and OSHA regulations.

SAFETY ON LAND & SEA

SailSafe is currently developing a comprehensive set of safety guidelines that
will be available to shipyards, Tall Ship organizations and sailors who are
working or training around vessels undergoing maintenance and refit work. We
welcome your input and look forward to offering guidance to ensure everyone
stays safe while doing the critical work of maintaining traditional vessels.

SailSafe’s mission is to provide shipyard-industrial safety awareness, agency
and guidance to all Tall Ship industry stakeholders – especially the untrained
novice sailor.

THE SAILSAFE GOAL

Traditional sailing vessels — often called Tall Ships — provide life-changing
sail training experience to novice sailors worldwide. Young people who are lucky
enough to have the opportunity to spend a semester — or years — at sea highly
value the training and experience they receive.

Of course there are risks with learning to operate antiquated and complex
vessels! Those risks place a high demand for seamanship expertise and safety
management by the vessel operators, Masters and senior officers. Particularly
when these vessels are dockside at maintenance/repair facilities, the challenges
for inexperienced sailors increase. According to the CDC’s National Institute of
Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH), between 2011 and 2017 there were at least
45 fatal accidents (4.0 per 100,000) among shipyard workers, a higher than the
rate than for all U.S. workers. There were an estimated 61,600 non-fatal
injuries/illnesses during the same period (5,370 per 100,000) — nearly twice the
rate for all U.S. workers, and one of the highest injury/illness rates among
maritime workers (https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/programs/cmshs/shipyards.html).

Let’s keep our sailors-in-training safe!  Tall Ships undergoing extensive
maintenance or repairs often bring their novice crews into overlapping roles
with shipyard workers and subcontractors who may not realize the crews don’t
have sufficient safety training. At SailSafe, we believe these crews can be
better prepared for these roles with the support of safety guidelines developed
in conjunction with the OSHA regulations governing the shipyards.
