DISCOVERING PORT TOWNSEND
Nestled on the northeast tip of the Olympic Peninsula just a few hours’ drive
(plus ferry ride) from Seattle lies a gem of a little city called Port Townsend,
also known as Washington State’s Victorian Seaport & Arts Community. Because of
its remote location at the end of HWY 20 on the Quimper Peninsula, Port Townsend
is not just your typical freeway drive-by town, but rather it’s a unique travel
“destination” spot in and of itself.
This quaint and picturesque seaside burg is surrounded by water on three sides
(Discovery Bay, Strait of Juan de Fuca, Admiralty Inlet), and enjoys stunning
views of both the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges. On a clear day the
majestic Mt. Ranier can be seen standing tall and proud to the east and the
equally impressive Mt. Baker to the north. Port Townsend has an enthusiastic
boating community with a rich and colorful maritime history making it a boater’s
paradise and gateway to the Puget Sound, beautiful San Juan Islands and beyond.
It’s no wonder that PT is host to the largest annual wooden boat festival in
North America, attracting attention and attendees from all over the world.
The Victorian downtown waterfront district (designated a national historical
landmark since 1977 due to its well-preserved, late 19th century buildings and
architecture) is a fun and exciting step back in time, which presents many
shopping and eating opportunities to discover and enjoy while visiting charming
