Last year Harry decided the time was right for new management to take over the running of his Leicester cleaning pad business. He didn’t have far to look because neighbours Priyesh, Amit and Niraj Mandalia were ready to buy the business – while keeping Harry on the team as a part-shareholder. Silver Lady Cleaning makes non-scratch scourers and pads under the brand name Miracle Cleaner and Harry's family has a history in the knitwear industry dating back a century. The Mandalia brothers’ plan is to make the business, which already has international clients, go digital, become sustainable and conquer the UK – a market it has yet to develop. The new owners – helped by mum Jayshree and dad Chiman Mandalia – are garment manufacturers who have had a unit above Harry’s for the past 10 years. Both businesses are based up the road from the Leicestershire County Cricket ground. Harry said he was delighted with the new direction his company was headed in. He said: “This has given me a new lease on life and I’m learning lots of things. PROMOTED STORIES “I’ve joined the Mandalia brothers to bring our product to the local market and I’m excited to see where the business goes with our combined experience and backgrounds.” Priyesh Mandalia said: “Harry has a wealth of knowledge and experience. We bought the business, asked him to continue working with us for as long as he wanted and made him a shareholder. “He’s a phenomenal guy with a great mind and work ethic. He was going to close the business and it would have been a shame to let that all go. “We want to expand because we love this product and want to share it. Harry is a shrewd businessman and has built a unique product with longevity. He’s such an inspiration and makes us want to do better. The possibilities are endless. “We sell about 12,000 pieces each month to New Zealand but nothing here. I’d say one of our main challenges is exposure. “We don’t know who to target or which doors we should be knocking on but I know we want to expand.” The business also exports to South Africa and Spain, with the products manufactured on machines built by Harry, with many of the parts taken from old knitwear machines. As well as scouring pads, new lines have been introduced including dishcloths. Priyesh Mandalia and Harry Green at Silver Lady Cleaning Mr Mandalia said over the past few months they had also spent time finding ways to lower their carbon footprint and be more sustainable – swapping product header cards to recycled paper and using disposable cotton to stitch the pads together. They are also working with De Montfort University to make their sponges bacteria-free. If that works, they could then be reused in playgrounds for example or bouncy castle pits. The business also sources locally or within the UK and all its products go by ship to international customers. Mr Mandalia said they had been helped with their growth plans by Leicestershire’s Business Gateway Growth Hub, which is part-European funded and delivered by a partnership including Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council, East Midlands Chamber and the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership. He said: “We were contacted by business adviser manager Russ Pacey following our initial enquiry. “We had an amazing conversation about Harry, our plans to grow in the UK and what help might be available.
