I found Timothy Willard's book Beauty Chasers: Recapturing the Wonder of the
Divine as I began building my syllabus for a study on the theology of beauty. As
I read, I realized that Beauty is a powerful theodicy. Like a gentle yet
passionate trail guide, Willard implores the reader to slow down and open our
eyes to see the beauty around us - despite the 'muck in life.' However, this
book is far more than a call to play Pollyanna's glad game. No! It is far more!
He explores the truth that God is the source of all beauty, and not only does
the Divine invite us to enjoy and partake, but he also invites us to commune
with Beauty, God himself. He writes, "It's time to pull ourselves away from the
dark voices in our lives and live the adventure of chasing beauty, of chasing
God." Willard's message is necessary today, for I believe and he states: "Beauty
will save the world." And as far as I can tell, the world needs saving now more
than ever.

justice. I read Beauty Chasers just after it's release, then downloaded the
audiobook for a trip last week. My husband and I listened together on a long
drive. He loved it as much as I did. I loved it just as much or more the second
time.

Timely — not just seeing, but knowing beauty — and I found myself longing to
join the Beauty Chasers of the world! The top of my head was blown off by how
Timothy handles it. Inspiring, practical, engaging and such
rabbit-trail-inducing research. The inspiration to separate the plastic from the
beautiful, the loud from the silence, and the unaffected real from the affected
authenticity… Slow down, but how? Well, this book is just great tonic for your

It's like you are being invited into Tim's journal of experiences and lessons of
beauty, which he shares with you to grow connection and thus become a valid
source of encouragement for you to go forth and entangle with beauty yourself.
Because who is better at guiding and impacting than a trusted confidant?!
A few words to describe the book are: fun, quirky, and thought provoking. Being
a huge fan of outdoor explorations, it was easy for me to relish and relate to
his stories.
I found the Waypoint segments intriguing and definitely part of the book that
caught me by surprise. I figured Tim would get me contemplating on things, but
wasn't anticipating for the writing to request my engagement so directly.
If you have been a follower and fan of Tim's for awhile, you know he has a
delightfully unique style. That is surely documented in this book. And if you
ever listen to his audio...there are moments you can almost hear him speaking
through the pages.
My favorite parts were the insights he shared for seeking God in beauty and what
an integral characteristic that is of the Lord. He touches on some Hebrew and
scriptural notions around beauty and how that is and reflects God...but I would
not have minded if he had gone even further into unpacking and elaborating on
beauty in the Word.
That said, I think this book surely has its place in helping anyone approach
beauty from a Godly lens and how beauty can and should be woven into our
lives...

Knowing Tim and Chris and their family brings profound weight to this message of
beauty because I see them living it out in their lives.
This book is pointing me continually back to the source of Beauty, God himself,
drawing me in by Tim’s creative visual stories of the display of beauty and
wonder and making me aware of Beauty surrounding me. I want to be a life long
Beauty chaser. Thank you Tim for writing this book!!!
