Welcome from the Family

Deputy Head
Isabella Blackburn - School Captain
Adams life is enriched with immeasurable opportunities for all interests. Pupils
are strongly encouraged to involve themselves in all manner of extracurricular
events. House Music and House Cross Country are true highlights of the school
calendar and every pupil represents their House with fierce determination and
enthusiasm. The historical House system sits at the heart of the school
community and forges strong bonds even between the unlikeliest of friends. All
pupils are inspired to reach their full potential, irrespective of ability or
background, and are supported in doing so by their peers and an incredible
cohort of staff. Adams is a spectacular place to develop and grow and is always
highly recommended by it’s many students.

Adams has made me who I am today and I strongly believe that the school’s
dedication to immersing pupils in a variety of activities and opportunities is
what makes our school stand out. Since joining the school in Year 7, I have had
the honour to participate in things I would have never dreamed of: from playing
rugby up at Longford with my friends to dancing on the stage in the Dixon Cup.
By encouraging pupils to step out of their comfort zone, the school creates a
great learning environment that leaves a lasting impression with us all.

Welcome to Haberdashers’ Adams, one of the few selective state grammar schools
in the UK. Located in Newport, Shropshire, we offer boarding and day places for
boys aged 11-18 with girls joining as day pupils in the Sixth Form. We have a
long and proud tradition of successfully educating generations of young people
with a passion for helping our pupils to develop as confident, articulate young
men and women who are interesting, balanced and who care for each other. I hope
you will get a glimpse of that through our website and book a visit on one of
our Open Days to experience in person the magical feel of Adams.

At Haberdashers’ Adams we are committed to ensuring our students receive a broad
and deep education, giving them the knowledge, skills, and wide-ranging
curiosity about the world they live in which will help them to have happy and
fulfilling lives and to contribute to the betterment of society. While this
involves preparation for a wide variety of public examinations, there is so much
more on offer at Adams which I hope you will discover as you explore our
website.

Central to pupil welfare is our thriving House system with a young person’s
House quickly becoming a young person’s family. Within that family they receive
support, encouragement, safety, discipline, opportunity, confidence, stability,
a large degree of healthy competition and a sense of belonging that ensures all
our pupils are happy, safe and respected. We would be only too happy to tell you
more and hope you decide to visit.

Charlotte Harman - Head of Sixth Form
I really enjoy working with Sixth Form pupils; it’s very rewarding to see them
mature during their final two years. It’s also wonderful to welcome so many new
pupils into our community in the Lower Sixth and I particularly enjoy seeing how
they work with the existing pupils to form a strong bond and work together in
their Houses to create some of the amazing House events that our older pupils
lead. Sixth Formers are making decisions that will affect their whole lives and
being able to provide the right advice and support can make an enormous
difference in helping pupils discover the path that’s right for them.

Sam Obeng-Asare - Junior Boarding Housemaster
As a state boarding school, Haberdashers’ Adams is able to offer a high quality
boarding education at a fraction of the cost of the independent sector. In fact,
boarding at Adams is on average less than a third of the fees of independent
schools because the education is free, and our junior boarders are able to enjoy
living in a beautiful grade II listed home with over 100 acres of grounds to
explore. I hope you enjoy finding out more about boarding at Adams and that I
have the opportunity of meeting you at one of our Boarding Open Events.
Discover
Colette Lonergan - Head of Senior Boarding
Boarding is becoming increasingly popular at 16+ with many students choosing to
study their A-levels at boarding schools, recognising boarding as the perfect
introduction to living and studying away from home. Since no charge is made for
the education at Haberdashers’ Adams, this becomes a much more affordable and
attractive option for families. We have a brand new senior boarding house which
we’d be delighted to show you and our boarders would love to tell you all about
boarding at Adams so do please feel free to arrange a visit.

A Charity Fundraising High

We have been busy raising funds for some very worthwhile causes and thanks to
the support of our wonderful pupils, parents and staff, we have raised a
magnificent £11,847 in less than three weeks.

The fundraising started with a mufti day, with pupils and staff wearing yellow
and blue clothes in support of the British Red Cross Ukraine Appeal. This day
alone raised an incredible £5,627.

Less than two weeks later our pupils and staff were busy fundraising again, with
the return once more of our annual Charities Week which raised a further £6,220
for five charities: The Wildlife Trusts; FareShare; The Shrewsbury and Telford
Hospital NHS Trust; Alzheimer's Society; and Oxfam.

The fundraising week was packed full of fun including different themed mufti
days, various staff v pupil sporting events, an Adams bake off and cake sale,
samosa sale, and a coin-snake competition.

The throwing of a wet sponge (or even a bucket for the right price!) at a
teacher was a very popular event with some fairly accurate targeting by pupils!
A big shout-out to Mr. Skeate, Mr Wain, Mr Chima, Mr Jopling and Mr Biggins for
taking it all in their stride saying it was all in the name of charity.

The five themed mufti days ranged from pupils and staff being suited and booted
to some beautiful cultural clothing, a pjs day and a character’s day. Upper
Sixth pupils Jack and Henry took the opportunity to dress as 118 characters
following their very first appearance six year previous as Year 7 pupils!

The Bake Sale was a resounding success. Thank you to everyone who donated and
made cakes, biscuits etc. The variety and standard of the bakes were very high
and absolutely delicious. They were all judged as part of the ‘Adams Bake Off’
with the following pupils winning awards: Parish from Year 9 took first place
with his stunning cake; Muhammad from Year 7 was awarded second place for his
splendid cupcakes, whilst  Thomas, Year 9 and Gabriel, Year 8 were both awarded
joint 3rd prize. The judge's discretionary award went to Amrinder in Y7 and
Nathaniel in Year 8 who brought in some fabulous goodies for gluten-free
customers.

The lunchtime sports games, where the pupils took on the staff in basketball,
netball, volleyball and football, were all very well attended and provided great
entertainment. Staff were the victors in the basketball, volleyball and football
games but our pupils were triumphant in the netball!

The ever so popular House Coins-snake competition returned and the Paddock Hall
floor was covered with coins as the five Houses competed to see who could make
the longest coin snake. Congratulations to Darwin House on securing the win. All
of the coins were donated to the week’s charity pot.

It would be remiss of us not to mention the Samosa Sale. All 250 samosas sold
out in 10 mins and so a second batch was very quickly sourced for the next day.
They really were delicious!

Our Charities Committee were very proud to announce the final total raised
during a special school assembly and thanked everyone for their support saying:
“Our Adams school community really is a very special one indeed!”

Please see below a photo album of images taken over the week which includes
pupils embracing our five themed mufti days.

Celebrating European Day of Languages

You never have time to be bored in our Modern Language Departments. There is
always so much going on and the European Day of Languages is a prime example.

The European Day of Languages is an event that has been held annually since 2001
and was originally set-up by the Council of Europe, whose objective is to help
promote the rich linguistic diversity of Europe and raise awareness of the
importance of lifelong language learning for everyone. Our Modern Language
Departments celebrated by creating a wonderful week of activities for our pupils
to enjoy.

Throughout the week pupils took part in linguistic and cultural activities,
which were educational and fun. Thank you to Chef Darren and his fabulous team
who once again pulled out all the stops to help our Modern Language Departments
mark the event. Over four days they produced delicious European themed food for
our pupils to enjoy, encouraging them to sample the delights of Italian, German,
French and British food, all of which were diverse and delicious.

A ‘Great European Bake-off’ competition was also held. All year groups were
encouraged to design, bake and decorate a cake that had to have a language
theme; they sure did deliver! The cakes were not just yummy but there were also
some marvellous imaginative ones produced. We really do have some very talented
pupils.

 * The prize for originality went to Owen Parker in Year 8D
 * The prize for authenticity went to Yuval Nehushtan in Year 7T - An amazingly
good moist cake called ‘Rugelach’, made using an original Yiddish recipe from
the Polish communities, with Yuval’s name written in Hebrew on the top.
 * The prize for effort and creativity went to Haris Khan in Year 8T - Again the
cake was very moist and well decorated with some great attention to detail
i.e. the football top with the German colours on it and the goals.
 * The prize for the best tasting cake went to Matthew Eley in Year 7T – It was
   delicious!

Another highlight of the week was the ‘La Blaguette & The Marshmallow / Sweet
Landmark’ competition. Pupils were asked to design and create an artistic
‘baguette’ using whatever materials they could find. Alternatively, they were
asked to create a famous European landmark with marshmallows or sweets! A hard
challenge but one our pupils embraced. Congratulations to you all, the entries
were really inspiring.

The results from the Sweet Landmark’ competition were:

 * 1st place went to Vikram Khaira in Year 7S for his Arc de Triomphe creation
 * 2nd place went to Daniel Curtiss in Year 7W for his Tower Bridge creation
 * 3rd place went to Jack Tomlinson in Year 7W for his Stonehenge creation

The winner of the Blaguette competition was:

 * Ethan Danbury in Year 70

Over the week pupils and staff also explored the European Day of Languages
website, so they could take part in the fun games and competitions which were
posted online. Teachers were also set the task of talking in a different
language for 5 to 10 minutes; a challenge but one all the staff from the
language department were able to achieve, which just showed what exceptional
linguists our pupils have teaching them.

Thank you to all our wonderful staff in our Modern Language Departments for all
their hard work. The experience our pupils gain from this week is invaluable, as
not only is it fun but it also increases our pupil’s cultural awareness.

Meet our New Head of Outreach

Some of you may already be aware of our Outreach programme but for those who are
not, I’d like to take to this opportunity to introduce myself and my role.

Outreach is all about the school engaging with our community and I am delighted
to have the opportunity to relaunch Haberdashers' Adams' Outreach programme and
to build on the work which was started a few years ago before Covid-19 changed
our world. This includes forging links with the many wonderful primary schools
in the Newport and Telford area.

Having taught in primary schools for a number of years, I am delighted to
continue working in the education field, albeit in a different role now.
Haberdashers’ Adams is a wonderful school and I want to be able to help raise
awareness with local families, in and around Newport and Telford, that we are
their local state grammar school and to help explain our application process.

Since starting the role last month, I have been busy re-engaging with the local
primary schools that we have previously enjoyed working with. It has been
wonderful to be able to welcome already Year 5 pupils from Moorfield Primary
School to Adams this term with a morning of orienteering at our playing fields
at Longford. I can’t wait to see more primary school children at Adams over the
coming months.

I am also planning a relaunch of our annual Summer School with a week-long event
in the school summer holiday period, offering lots of fun activities for primary
school children to enjoy. More details will be shared soon. In the meantime, I
am arranging for our Sixth Form pupils to visit local schools in a mentoring
capacity. Over 40 of our pupils have signed up to help with this which just goes
to show what a lovely, caring bunch of pupils we have at Adams.

Please do keep in touch with our Outreach work by following us on Twitter @
HA_Outreach.

What we go on to do
Adam Davies

Class of 2014 - BSc Honours in Lighting Design

Adam developed a love of Lighting and Live Events after being involved with big
House Events and end of year School Productions whilst at Adams’, always joking
that his change in career path from Computing to Lighting was “entirely Mr
Hickey’s fault”, who was heavily involved with the shows at the time.

Adam Graduated from the University of South Wales in 2018 with a 1st (with
honours) in BSc Lighting Design, writing a dissertation on the use of Artificial
Intelligence within Lighting [Control] to help sleep patterns of Dementia
sufferers.

After working as a freelance programmer for a year, Adam now works full time as
a “Control and Data Systems Specialist” for company TSL Lighting. At Adams’,
Adam was known for his enjoyment of maths and physics, so this role allows him
to combine the two and take a very analytical approach to such a creative
industry.

At TSL, Adam works on a variety of events and spends around half of his time in
and around Europe. Notable events include Private Weddings for the rich and
famous, Glastonbury, Facebook’s Christmas Party, “Annabel’s” birthday, McLaren
Launches, the League of Legends World Final and everything in between! You can

Richard Burge
Class of 1975 - Chief Executive Officer

Richard Burge is CEO of The London Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Before
taking up his current role he was CEO of the Commonwealth Enterprise and
Investment Council and before that he held the same role at Wilton Park, an
executive agency of the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Previous roles included Chief Executive of the Countryside Alliance, Director
General of the Zoological Society of London and nearly 10 years in various roles
at the British Council.

The Burge Cup is awarded annually during Prize-giving to the pupil who has made
the greatest contribution to speech and drama during their time at the school.
In recent years the Burge family have also awarded the Arthur Kimberley prize
during the school's annual Remembrance Service.

The award was founded by Richard and his brother Jeremy who have always revered
the memory of their Uncle Arthur Kimberley, also an Old Novaportan, who died
aged 20 in 1944.

Arthur was a rear gunner and telegraphist on Barracuda planes in the Artic
Convoys.  In July 1944, he was in the lead attack plan captained by Wing
Commander Hugh Baker-Faulkner DFC on the Turpitz in a remote Norwegian fjord.
The attack was successful and it kept the Turpitz immobilised for the rest of
the war. The King flew out to the aircraft carrier to thank the crews and Arthur
was mentioned in dispatches.  A few days later, they were on a routine patrol,
the fog came down, and they were last heard of heading east in the hope of
reaching the Norwegian coast before their fuel ran out.  They were not seen
again.

The award is designed to assist either a single or a small group of pupils in
undertaking a task, or event, or work which will be demanding and is focused
solely on improving the life of someone or others far less fortunate than them.
