HERE'S WHO WON. The former president backed a slew of Republicans running unopposed in their primaries Tuesday. Former President Donald Trump speaks to supporters during a rally on August 05, 2022 in Waukesha, Wis. | Scott Olson/Getty Images By Marissa Martinez 08/24/2022 01:41 AM EDT * * * * Link Copied * * * * In one of his most sweeping endorsement days, Trump backed 19 candidates in Florida alone, the home of his always-in-the-news Mar-a-Lago resort. Also notable is who he did not endorse in the Sunshine State: Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is gearing up for a potential 2024 run for the presidency that could pit him against Trump, though neither possible candidate has announced official plans yet. This week, Trump’s endorsements even extended (sarcastically) to Democrats. Trump made posts on Truth Social jumping into the middle of primaries including New York City Democrats Dan Goldman, the lead counsel against Trump during the first impeachment hearings, and Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), who was chair of the House oversight committee during Trump’s presidency. Both candidates immediately rejected the backing. We’re tracking Donald Trump’s endorsement track record through the 2022 primaries. Get caught up here: • May 3: Ohio and Indiana • May 10: Nebraska and West Virginia • May 17: Idaho, Kentucky, North Carolina and Pennsylvania • May 24: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia and the Texas runoffs • June 7: California, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana and South Dakota • June 14: South Carolina, Nevada, North Dakota and Maine • June 21 & 28: Alabama, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois, Oklahoma and Utah • July 19 & Aug 2: Maryland, Arizona, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington • Aug 9: Wisconsin and Connecticut Last week, Trump’s preferred candidate in Wyoming, Harriet Hageman, also left easily with an almost 40-point win against Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who earned Trump’s ire for her impeachment vote and leadership on the Jan. 6 committee. Meanwhile, fellow Trump endorsee Sarah Palin is in limbo in Alaska as the state prepares to tabulate votes in its ranked-choice special House election on Aug. 31. FLORIDA WINS ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHLEY MOODY Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody speaks at a news conference on Feb. 7, 2022, in Miami. | Marta Lavandier/AP Photo Won unopposed. Moody is a former Democrat whose family once sued Trump over a condominium dispute. She has become a major voice in high-profile conservative cases in the state since she took office in 2019. She joined the motion brought by Texas attorney General Ken Paxton and others that sought to overturn 2020 election results in four states, which was later shot down by the Supreme Court. She also served on Trump’s National Law Enforcement Commission as the sole attorney general. In his endorsement, Trump said Moody was “a crusader fighting opioid abuse and human trafficking ever since. Ashley Moody will never let you down.” CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER JIMMY PATRONIS Won unopposed. AG COMMISSIONER WILTON SIMPSON Won with 65 percent of the vote. SENATE MARCO RUBIO Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), speaks with reporters in March. | Francis Chung/E&E News Won unopposed. Rubio seemed to be in political trouble last year with elements of the GOP, but that evaporated when Trump endorsed him last April. He has stopped short of criticizing Trump in the years following their presidential bids against each other in 2016. Rubio declined to vote against 2020 election results, in contrast to fellow Florida GOP Sen. Rick Scott — but nevertheless, Trump called him “a tireless advocate for the people of Florida.” Rubio will face Democratic Rep. Val Demings in November in a highly watched contest. FL01 MATT GAETZ Won with 70 percent of the vote. He voted to overturn 2020 election results. One of Trump’s strongest supporters in the House, Gaetz helped stall the first impeachment trial against the former president by disrupting committee hearings. Gaetz has also been under investigation for alleged sex trafficking since last year. He previously asked Trump to give preemptive pardons, a common practice for the former president while he was in office, to himself and other congressional politicians. Trump denied having heard such a request. Gaetz has worked to “fight the never-ending witch hunts from the radical left that are destroying our country,” Trump wrote in his endorsement. FL02 NEAL DUNN Won unopposed. He voted to overturn 2020 election results. FL03 KAT CAMMACK Won with 85 percent of the vote. She voted to overturn 2020 election results. FL05 JOHN RUTHERFORD Won with 66 percent of the vote. He voted to overturn 2020 election results. FL06 MICHAEL WALTZ Won with 77 percent of the vote. FL12 GUS BILIRAKIS Won with 80 percent of the vote. FL13 ANNA PAULINA LUNA Won with 45 percent of the vote. See all results FL16 VERN BUCHANAN Won with 86 percent of the vote. FL17 GREG STEUBE Won unopposed. He voted to overturn 2020 election results. FL18 SCOTT FRANKLIN Won with 73 percent of the vote. He voted to overturn 2020 election results. FL19 BYRON DONALDS Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) arrives to the Hyatt Regency hotel on Capitol Hill on November 12, 2020 in Washington, D.C. | Sarah Silbiger/Getty Images Won with 84 percent of the vote. He voted to overturn 2020 election results. The freshman congressman has made waves in the House, meeting with the ex-president in New Jersey soon after saying the Congressional Black Caucus excluded him for his conservative views last June. Donalds also hosted Trump and his wife Melania for a Christmas celebration last December. “Congressman Byron Donalds has been a terrific advocate for the people of Florida and our Country,” Trump said in his endorsement. FL21 BRIAN MAST Won with 78 percent of the vote. He voted to overturn 2020 election results. FL26 MARIO DIAZ-BALART Won with 84 percent of the vote. He voted to overturn 2020 election results. FL28 CARLOS GIMÉNEZ Won with 73 percent of the vote. He voted to overturn 2020 election results. DISTRICT 12 MIAMI-DADE COUNTY COMMISSIONER JUAN CARLOS BERMUDEZ Won with 66 percent of the vote. Elections DEMOCRATS GAIN MOMENTUM: 5 TAKEAWAYS FROM THE LAST BIG PRIMARY NIGHT OF 2022 By David Siders and Gary Fineout and Matt Dixon NEW YORK WINS NY21 ELISE STEFANIK House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) was a major Interior-EPA bill earmark recipient. | Francis Chung/E&E News Won unopposed. She voted to overturn 2020 election results. The No. 3 House leader rose quickly, assuming Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney’s position after Cheney fell out of favor with the House GOP for her stance on Trump. Stefanik said she speaks with Trump multiple times a week, who has called her “one of my killers,” and recently headlined a New York rally with him. Trump also once suggested her as a potential 2028 presidential committee, a position she denied pursuing at the moment. NY24 CLAUDIA TENNEY Won with 54 percent of the vote. ICYMI: WYOMING WINS ON AUG. 16 SECRETARY OF STATE CHUCK GRAY Won with 50 percent of the vote. WYOMING STATE TREASURER CURT MEIER Won with 71 percent of the vote. AT-LARGE HOUSE DISTRICT HARRIET HAGEMAN Harriet Hageman talks to a supporter at a campaign event on March 7, 2022, in Cheyenne, Wyo. | Mead Gruver/AP Photo Won with 66 percent of the vote. Trump selected Hageman to oppose Cheney after the incumbent voted to impeach him and joined the House committee to investigate the Jan. 6 attacks, becoming a top political target ahead of the midterms. Voters soured on Cheney quickly and gave Hageman a decisive win. After her victory, Trump said, “This is a wonderful result for America, and a complete rebuke of the Unselect Committee of political hacks and thugs… Now she can finally disappear into the depths of political oblivion where, I am sure, she will be much happier than she is right now.” ICYMI: ALASKA WINS ON AUG. 16 GOVERNOR MIKE DUNLEAVY Advanced with 42 percent of the vote. SENATE KELLY TSHIBAKA Advanced with 40 percent of the vote. AT-LARGE HOUSE DISTRICT SARAH PALIN U.S. House candidate and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin speaks during a "Save America" rally at Alaska Airlines Center on July 9, 2022, in Anchorage, Alaska. | Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Advanced with 32 percent of the vote. * Filed under: * Florida, * New York, * Alaska, * Midterms, * Donald Trump, * Donald Trump 2020, * Endorsements, * Wyoming, * 2022 Elections POLITICO * * * * Link Copied * * * * HUDDLE A play-by-play preview of the day's congressional news Huddle A play-by-play preview of the day's congressional news By signing up you agree to allow POLITICO to collect your user information and use it to better recommend content to you, send you email newsletters or updates from POLITICO, and share insights based on aggregated user information.
