INVITING INCLUSIVITY

INVITING INCLUSIVITY

Print

You’ve made this day a special day, by just your being you. There’s no person in
the whole world like you, and I like you just the way you are.
—Mr. Rogers

Fred Rogers, better known as Mr. Rogers, was an American television personality
who created and hosted the children's TV series Mister Rogers' Neighborhood
which ran for over thirty years. Mr. Rogers saw the world as being a
neighborhood, one in which each of us uses our unique talents and abilities to
build and make a better place. He encouraged us to be kind to one another, and
reminded us that we could express kindness by practicing inclusivity, making
good choices, and being consistent. If we can do these things, then we’ll not
only be more productive, but we’ll learn how to enjoy our time together.

“I’ve always wanted a neighbor just like you. I’ve always wanted to live in a
neighborhood with you.” —Mr. Rogers

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
Every morning for decades, Mr. Rogers began his show with, “Won’t you be my
neighbor?” That’s because neighborliness isn’t an expectation; it’s a request.
In Mr. Rogers’ style of neighborliness, we reach out to our neighbors and
promise that we’ll treat them well and hope to receive the same treatment.

This invitation is important, because it puts the responsibility on us, the
inviters, to be people whose neighborhood other people would want to join. We
can expect the best of ourselves, and try to become the people who are accepting
of everyone.

An Invitation to a Breakdancer
In 1985, Fred Rogers invited a twelve-year-old breakdancer named Jermaine Vaughn
onto his show. Mr. Rogers’ inclusivity was based on genuine interest and
admiration for abilities and skills he himself did not possess. Yet, he wanted
to make this young breakdancer feel included and did so in a variety of
different ways:

He showed curiosity. Rogers asked questions about Vaughn's breakdancing style
and when he developed his interest in the dance phenomenon. He lent a hand. The
TV host offered to help where he could. He helped the boy set up a cardboard mat
so he could dance, showing that though Rogers was the host, he wasn't above
doing the work.He became the student. He allowed Vaughn to teach him something
new, listening carefully and being respectful while he did.He stepped back.
Rogers gave up the spotlight, stepping back and giving Jermaine space to
perform. He wasn't intrusive and let Vaughn finish without interruption.

Take Away: One of the goals of inclusivity is to build a team or network with
lots of different skills, so that the whole is greater than the sum of its
parts. But people need to be invited and feel welcomed in order to achieve their
full potential.

SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW

True or False. Everyone wants to be in our neighborhood, so asking people to
join us will likely feel condescending.
