Biden's Age Under The Microscope At State Of The Union Speech

TL/DR: "Biden needs to look and sound sharp and vibrant," Presidential historian
Barbara Perry told Newsweek. "He will have no other audience like this until
Election Day."

President Joe Biden has a dwindling number of opportunities before election day
to address a large primetime audience, raising the stakes for his State of the
Union speech Thursday as he makes the case for a second term.

Why it matters: The State of the Union speech will likely be his most important
speech ahead of the Democratic National Convention in August to win over voters.
Biden will be under an even greater microscope due to age concerns following a
special counsel report released last month casting doubt on his mental acuity.
The president also faces foreign policy challenges, including blowback from
Democrats for supporting Israel in its war with Hamas.

John Fetterman Speaks Out on Taylor Swift's Potential Biden Endorsement

What happens now? Biden is set to deliver his State of the Union address today
at 9 PM, ET. He is expected to use the speech to criticize Republicans for
backing out of negotiations on border reform legislation after Trump urged GOP
lawmakers to oppose a deal on immigration. The president will also likely take
the opportunity to paint Republicans as extreme on abortion.

Alabama Lawmakers Approve Bill to Protect IVF Treatments

TL/DR: "IVF is a complex issue, no doubt, and I anticipate there will be more
work to come, but right now, I am confident that this legislation will provide
the assurances our IVF clinics need and will lead them to resume services
immediately," said Kay Ivey, governor of Alabama.

Alabama lawmakers passed legislation that aims to protect in vitro fertilization
(IVF) access following the controversial ruling by the state's Supreme Court
regarding the procedure last month.

Why it matters: The bill passed with bipartisan support in both chambers of
Alabama's legislature, coasting in the state House 81-12 and 29-1 in the Senate.
Despite some opposition, a handful of Democrats proposed a bill explicitly
stating embryos "outside of the uterus" were not "considered an unborn child,"
although the measure did not receive enough support to advance. Republican
sponsors emphasize fostering a culture of life and ensuring access to IVF
services. However, religious and anti-abortion groups urge careful consideration
of human dignity.

Read more in-depth coverage:

Republican Blocks IVF Bill Because It Could Lead to 'Human-Animal Chimeras'

Alabama Attorney General Responds to Controversial IVF Ruling

Greg Abbott Says Texas Will Address IVF After Alabama Ruling

What happens now? According to The New York Times, the University of Alabama at
Birmingham (UAB) health system, the state's largest, said that it was "moving to
promptly resume IVF treatments" but that it would continue to monitor
"developments and advocate for protection."

Former Trump-Backed Candidate Wanted in Vegas Killing Turns Self In

TL/DR: “Mr. Rodimer is voluntarily surrendering to authorities and will post a
court ordered bail," Rodimer's lawyers David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld
wrote in a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

A former Republican congressional candidate who was endorsed by Donald Trump is
being held by authorities in the deadly beating of a man at a hotel on the Las
Vegas Strip last year, according to local police.

Why it matters: Daniel Rodimer, 45, turned himself in to authorities at Clark
County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, around 6 p.m. Wednesday. He was
backed by Trump during his 2020 campaign, writing he would be "an incredible
Congressman" issuing his "Complete and Total Endorsement" on X, formerly
Twitter. Rodimer, a WWE wrestler prior to entering politics, is a suspect in the
killing of 47-year-old Christopher Tapp in 2023, after Tapp allegedly offered
cocaine to Rodimer's stepdaughter.

What happens now? Rodimer's arrest warrant reportedly called for $200,000 bail.
Court records indicated that he had posted bond Wednesday night, according to
the Review-Journal. He is expected to appear in court April 10 where he may be
formally charged.

Russia's Hypersonic Missile Risk

TL/DR: It's a massive, calculated risk," William Alberque told Newsweek.

Russia has hammered Ukraine with its hypersonic missiles throughout the more
than two years of full-scale war in the country. But Moscow is walking a fine
line, testing out its new capabilities while trying not to give away a blueprint
for how Russia's adversaries could best defend against them.

Why it matters: Firing hypersonic weapons in Ukraine poses a gamble for Russia,
providing a larger arsenal and an opportunity to test "next generation" systems
while exposing vulnerabilities. Former NATO official William Alberque told
Newsweek, "We're learning a lot from operational use, successes, lack of
success," he said. "It is "astonishing" that Moscow is using some of its most
advanced systems, intended to threaten NATO, and Russia is providing an
"opportunity to learn so much about them."

Read more in-depth coverage:

Chinese Mercenaries Join Russia in Ukraine Conflict

What happens now? Russia's use of hypersonic weapons shows Moscow is keen to
test new technologies and learn from the conflict, James Black told Newsweek,
but it also highlights that Russia is feeling the strain on its stockpiles of
other, cheaper precision munitions.

People Leaving Their Jobs Are Making More Money

TL/DR: "In short, the labor market is dynamic, but doesn't tip the scales in
terms of a Fed rate decision this year." ADP's chief economist Nela Richardson
said in a statement.

Americans who switched jobs saw their pay increase for the first time in a year,
rising 7.6%, as private employers added more jobs. Meanwhile, pay gains for
those remaining at their jobs slowed to 5.1%, the lowest since August 2021,
according to ADP's National Employment Report.

Why it matters: This indicates the labor market remains strong. Americans less
optimistic about their financial conditions have been concerned about their
jobs, with consumer confidence falling in February after a rise of optimism. The
Federal Reserve pays close attention to pay increases and the impact they might
have on inflation, which remains higher than the 2% target—pushing up borrowing
costs across the economy.

Americans Are Getting More Worried About Jobs

America Is Hiring, and That's Great News for Joe Biden

Massive Layoffs Are Coming to These 3 States

What happens now? Jerome Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve, suggested
policymakers are likely done raising rates and may cut borrowing costs at some
point this year, if inflation progresses to their target. Economists expect the
first reduction of borrowing costs by the summer.

What Scientists Say About the FMD Diet

Imagine if you could diet for just five days a month and see results. Results
that extend far beyond weight loss and promise to "rejuvenate" your body at a
cellular level. This is the basis of the fast-mimicking diet, also known as FMD.

Intermittent fasting has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, with
programs like the 5:2 diet and time restricted eating receiving endorsements
from celebrities and nutritionists around the world. All of these different diet
plans are characterized by a cycle of fasting and feeding on a regular, cyclical
schedule. But unlike most other fasting diets, which rotate on a daily or weekly
basis, the FMD revolves around a monthly cycle.

"It's really another form of intermittent fasting but it's unique in the sense
in the way it is organized," Adam Collins, associate professor of nutrition at
the University of Surrey in the U.K., told Newsweek.
