METS SIGN ALL-STAR TO MLB DEAL

By Matthew Postins,

2023-11-30

The New York Mets have agreed to a deal with veteran infielder and former
All-Star Joey Wendle, per SNY and Fansided .

Wendle’s deal is pending a physical.

He brings position versatility to the Mets, as he can play second base,
shortstop and third base. He has more than 200 career games at second base and
third base, while he has nearly 200 career games at shortstop.

While Francisco Lindor is the clear starter at shortstop, Wendle can compete for
playing time at second base and third base, the latter being a position where
the Mets could use some stability.

He has spent the past two seasons with the Miami Marlins, where he helped their
push to a National League Wild Card berth in 2023.

Last season he slashed .212/.248/.306/.554 with two home runs and 20 RBI. The
.212 batting average was the lowest of his eight-year Major League career.

In 2022, his first year with the Marlins, he slashed .259/.297/.360/.658 with
three home runs and 32 RBI.

Before the Marlins, he spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, where in 2021
he was selected for the All-Star Game for the only time in his career.

In 136 games with the Rays he slashed .265/.319/.422/.741 with a career-high 11
home runs and 54 RBI.

In four seasons with the Rays he batted .274 with 25 home runs and 151 RBI. In
2018, his first full Major League season, he finished fourth in American League
Rookie of the Year voting.

Before the Rays, he spent his first two seasons with the Oakland Athletics in
2016 and 2017, but he only played a combined 36 games those seasons.

Joey Wendle! holy shit! I can't belive it! Did you know he's an all star? (based
solely on the first half of a season over 5 years ago)
