The best way to stay ahead of these conditions is through routine eye exams. The older you get, the more often you should be having your eyes checked. CATARACT SURGERY Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the world. However, there’s no need to fear! Cataracts can be treated effectively through cataract surgery. Cataract surgery replaces the eye’s natural lens with an artificial one, known as an intraocular lens or IOL. If you begin to notice glare, halos, or a new sensitivity to light, you may be developing cataracts. Take our Cataract self-test today to find out if Cataract Surgery is right for you! REFRACTIVE CLEAR LENS EXCHANGE Refractive Clear Lens Exchange is a procedure for those who have not yet undergone cataract surgery and struggle with refractive errors or desire to reduce their dependency on glasses or contact lenses. This procedure is very similar to cataract surgery, where the eye’s natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens. Not only does this change correct refractive errors and reduce your need for glasses, but it can also prevent cataracts from forming! SECONDARY LENS PLACEMENT (YAMANE TECHNIQUE) Secondary Lens Placement is a surgical procedure used to implement a new secondary lens that can help regain focus and vision. This procedure is explicitly reserved for those who have had a traumatic loss, damage, or dislocation to their previously implanted lens implant. Additionally, depending on the health and condition of the eye, the Yamane Technique can be used to implant a new lens without sutures with intrascleral haptic fixation. GLAUCOMA Glaucoma is an eye disease that affects the optic nerve and does not show any noticeable symptoms until severe damage has been done. Unfortunately, the vision lost from glaucoma cannot be restored. However, if glaucoma is caught in an early stage, there are treatment methods to prevent or slow the further progression of glaucoma. If you have a family history of glaucoma, you may be at a higher risk of developing glaucoma. The best way to stay ahead of this eye disease is to have routine eye exams to ensure you’re not developing glaucoma. MACULAR DEGENERATION Macular degeneration occurs when the macula begins to break down or deteriorate. This can directly affect your central vision. Macular degeneration can develop as a part of the body’s natural aging process, giving it the name age-related macular degeneration or AMD. However, there are multiple types of AMD, like normal macula, dry macular degeneration (atrophic), and wet macular degeneration (exudative). Unfortunately, there is some difficulty in treating AMD as we still do not know what causes it. At Desert Vision Center, we offer treatments that can stop new blood vessels from forming and block leaking from abnormal vessels. We do this treatment in our office, and it usually only takes a couple of minutes but is generally repeated for several weeks or months. DRY EYE DISEASE Dry Eye Disease is an eye condition that can be caused by many different factors. Because of this, there are tons of different treatment options for dry eye, depending on what is causing it. Some of the symptoms of dry eye include eye fatigue, gritty sensation in the eye, redness and tearing, or a history of eye surgery, including LASIK. If you think you may be suffering from dry eye, contact us today! DIABETIC EYE CARE If diabetes is not carefully managed, it can result in complications in the eye. Diabetic retinopathy can be caused by high blood glucose levels in both type 1 & type 2 diabetes. These high blood glucose levels can damage the blood vessels in the retina, leading to diabetic retinopathy. However, you may not notice any visual symptoms while diabetic retinopathy is forming, so it’s essential to have routine diabetic eye exams if you’re concerned about developing diabetic retinopathy. ENCHROMA Enchroma was founded in 2010 and is a revolutionary pair of glasses that improves the lives of patients who have colorblindness. Enchroma is estimated to comprise 4/5 cases of color blindness. These glasses also offer 100% UVA/UVB protection and are made with non-glare coatings on both sides to boost clarity and reduce haze. Feel free to try Enchroma for yourself in our office or for a 10-day trial before purchasing! SECOND OPINION CONSULTATION We happily offer second opinion consultations for those already established with another eye care provider who has had complications from cataract surgery or those wishing for an entire review of your treatment plan. Specifically, Dr. Tokuhara specializes in remedying cataract surgery complications. At your second opinion consultation, we will thoroughly examine your eyes to gain a complete perspective of your current eye situation. Afterward, we’ll review the necessary medical records and your current exam and specialized test results. Dr. Tokuhara will then discuss findings and recommendations based on these examinations.
