Next Show Caption 1 of 2 Colorado Avalanche defensive prospect Tyson Barrie #41 during a morning training camp skate. Joe Amon, The Denver Post Expand By Mike Chambers | The Denver Post PUBLISHED: October 2, 2011 at 5:43 a.m. | UPDATED: May 2, 2016 at 8:36 a.m. Left wing Gabriel Landeskog and defenseman Stefan Elliott are the only remaining rookies in contention to make the Avalanche’s opening-night roster. The Avs on Sunday reassigned first-year professional rookies Brad Malone (center) and Tyson Barrie (defenseman), plus veterans Patrick Bordeleau (left wing) and Trevor Cann (goalie), to the American Hockey League training camp of the Lake Erie Monsters. The moves trim Colorado’s preseason roster to 27, four more than the Avs will take into Saturday’s season opener against the Detroit Red Wings at the Pepsi Center. Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said Malone, 22, who played the past four seasons for the University of North Dakota, and Barrie will be better off beginning their pro careers in the minor leagues. Barrie, 20, is a former major-junior star for the Kelowna (British Columbia) Rockets. “We gave them a good look, and I thought they had a real good opportunity here,” Sacco said of Malone and Barrie. “They played a number of preseason games, both guys, (but) right now what I think is best for their development is to go down and start in the American Hockey League and learn how to play the pro game and learn how to be a pro. “It’s a great development league for young players and a real tough, competitive league to play in. I just felt, at this time, they hadn’t done enough to really overtake some of the other guys in their respective roles.” Malone was competing for a job as a checking-line center and Barrie as a puck-skating, offensive defenseman. The Avs are carrying 16 forwards, nine defensemen and two goalies. Their 23-man, regular-season roster will be set Wednesday and include 13 or 14 forwards as well as seven or eight defensemen. Forward Brandon Yip (broken forearm) will be put on injured reserve, so only three more players will be reassigned or waived. Landeskog, 18, is the only player eligible to be sent back to his junior team. The No. 2 pick in the June draft is expected to make the team. And the 20-year-old Elliott, a power-play specialist, has a good chance if the Avalanche keeps eight defensemen. “Making it through (again), it feels pretty good right now,” Elliott said after practice Sunday. “Nothing is a given. I just have to keep going out there and proving myself.” Reassigning the 6-foot-6, 225-pound Bordeleau means the Avs likely will begin the season without an enforcer. Bordeleau, 25, played for Lake Erie the past two seasons, compiling 125 penalty minutes last season. “He’s a guy that certainly didn’t hurt his chances as far as being a depth player for us this year,” Sacco said of Bordeleau. Footnote. The Avs host their annual Charity Golf Classic at The Ridge at Castle Pines North in Castle Rock today. The event typically raises more than $80,000 to support children and families in need.
